to the best of my knowledge - you cannot make GW use more than 4x AA - it's an old game and will still look like an old game even with 16x AA...

you will still need to install the applications that you had on XP, any documents etc should be fully accessible though.

you need a generic CAT5 cable (ethernet) and yes a bad cable could be the reason, and is the easiest/cheapest thing to try to fix the problem as well.
