No avatar is better than Melandru. Lyssa is pretty good, and doesn't require as much energy so I use it quite a bit though.

If you can go /Me and bring empathy, stoneflesh aura and armor of earth. Maintain the two enchantments and empathy the doppelganger until it dies.

You want to use the elemental hilt on other warriors, and not much else. I prefer shocking over icy just because my sword came with it. I doubt it...
