As has been said, dye appears differently on some dyeable objects (armor, weapons, etc.) than others. Without knowing the particular type of armor...
You can get max, but cheap armor in Droknar's Forge (Prophecies), Kaineng Center (Factions) and Consulate Docks or Command Post (Nightfall)...
