The Haves and the Have Nots...

I really don't notice anyone else's armor or weapons and as long as I have the best weapon for the circumstances I don't care what it looks like.

If you have the skill, time, and money to get FoW armor, congrats. All my chars use 1.5k armor and it suits me fine. I could afford move up to the 15k stuff for at least 1 character, but I don't think the cheaper armor looks THAT much worse.

After about 14 months I have about 75k saved up and that's enough to get anything I need.
The reason I'm not rich is because I have never sold anything. The reason I'm not poor is because I've never bought anything.
I despise selling/buying. I play to kill stuff, not to be the next billionaire. That's just me, though. Nothing against the pro traders.

You can equip yourself quite nicely with just the collector's items, and the monsters drop all kinds of mods you can add to them.
I have had some pretty sweet weapon drops, and if I feel I may use it someday I squirrel it away. If not, I either try to expert salvage the good mod or just sell it to the npc.
I use to give away golds, but out of maybe 6 golds and 10 purples I've had two people thank me. One guy actually complained about the gold hammer I gave him, so that was the end of that.

All the gold bows I saved came in handy when I made a ranger recently. As soon as she was high enough to equip them she had 4 max damage bows, all with good mods suited for any build she needs to run. Crippling, poisonous, and vampiric longbows and a purple half-moon should get you just about anywhere you need to go.

I do farm trolls outside Drok's with my wammo when I'm bored. It's a decent moneymaker for 5 minutes of playing and I get some good mods on crappy weapons that I can salvage.

Maybe on caster items, but not on warrior weapons.

Yea but if you play game for really long you get a nice sum of money and you WANT to have a nice skinn weapon just coz it looks nice, there is no difference betwen my perfect zodiac longbow 20/20 +30hp and ordianary long bow with same stats. But I want my weapons and armor look pretty, I have made a big mistake creating a male ranger no armor other than FoW looks good for him, so this means I will buy him FoW armor coz it looks so nice and I have to to play.

But yea you can get trough with collector items too.

I think you are misunderstanding it.

You do more damage with more mastery, that's obvious.

But you do not do more damage with a req 7 weapon than with a req 13 weapon - THAT's the myth.

Why do I prefer req 8s over 10s (even though I usually use a 10-12 because I"m cheap)...and why do I have FoW, and 15k sets (even though I have 1.5k sets as well, cause i'm cheap). Gives me a sense of security, when GW is my only form of enjoyment in my boring life.

Farming is total bs.Just playing the game in a methodical pace will get you your great gear no problem.
I made five rpg characters and i have only one (the original) that has access to every outpost in the game (factions included). I just explore the map, do quests, sell the occasional green very cheap and never use runners.I just never leave town without a quest to do or an outpost to reach.

All five characters have 15k armor and near perfect weapons. And my last character didn't even get off Cantha yet.

I've been playing since the day prophecies went live so I guess I'm one of the haves. All four of my characters have 15k armor but I've never really understood why people actually collect weapons. I know several people that feel they must litterally have one of every single green which makes no sense to me. If you see a weapon you want; or even a few you want if you use several builds; I could see buying those but to buy simply for the sake of having one doesn't make sense to me.

my necro uses a collector's blood staff which is perfect for me

my warr has a kanaxai's edge(paid 100k+5ecto) and a gothic defender
-(+30health free on a lucky drop) to go with my 15k kurzick armor set
and a gold fellblade(dropped for me waaay back on my first trip in mineral
-springs back before chests even needed keys ) and a collector carapace
-shield to go with my 15k platemail

my ranger uses ryver's shortbow(got free my first run through arborstone mission) and skin looks great with my 15k Drakescale too

finally my assassin uses the ceremonial daggers(amulet of the mists)
-and also has shiro's blades cause they just look cool and no assassin is complete without a pair



one of my money sinks would have to be that I buy all skills for all classes (unlock for pvp and whatnot ) even though the skills for just the core classes in factions was 180k

Kudos to Cap for making this thread. It explains everything lazy whiners need to know, before they open they're mouths in game or on forums about everything being impossible to obtain without ebaying etc. I consider myself an extremely happy and proud have it all guy. Just cause I have it all, doesn't mean I should give handouts. If you want it, work for it. There are shortcuts you can take.


To the people who make a big issue about fissure armor, let me tell you this: I have a total of 3 full sets of fissure armor that I've never ebayed. It has never taken more than 2 weeks to get all of the materials (thats with casual playing 3 hours a day at most) for each set. To be honest fissure armor is pretty easy to get. Those playing on the euro servers reading this, you know what I'm talking about People who cry about ebay being the only easy way, have alot to learn about the game. /laugh at newbs ebaying fissure armor while the intelligent ppl get it free

What are GREEN, GOLD, and whatever other color items out there and what do they do??

Items are assigned a color based on the level of their inherent stat (the one that you can't modify). White items have no inherent stats, blue items have low-level ones, purple items have midrange ones, and gold have high-end ones. Basically, gold items are the best normal items you can get.

Greens are unique items that drop from certain bosses (and in a few instances just from random stuff) that have all their stats completely maxed. They will usually be assigned a name based on what they drop from (i.e. Tanzit Razorstone might drop the axe Razorstone). Green items cannot be modified, even with dye.

The color of an item indicates its rarity. From least rare to rarest, they are: white, blue, purple, and gold. These are random drops, and hence have random stats on them. Green items are usually dropped by bosses, and have fixed stats, meaning they cannot be further upgraded with mods (they can't be dyed either). Greens usually have "perfect" stats and mods, whereas it's random on golds, purples, blues, and whites. White items will not have any inherent mods on them, while all the other ones do. The more rare a color is, the better the chances are there will be more "perfect" mods on them.

i too am tired of hearing about how anyone w/ fow armor must have ebayed it. i saved up and farmed all my ecto for my fow armor, never bought or sold a single one until i obtained my armor. It wasn't a quick process, as back in those days most people would only get one piece at a time as they slowly accumulated the ecto and shards they needed.

really, accumulating gold isn't all that hard. there's just a little secret, just like in real life, don't spend on what you don't really need. generally 99% of the people who i meet who claim they're poor and penniless also add, "well, i just spend 100k on this green" or "i just bought 15k armor"

well, of course you're poor! you just spent your damn gold until you were broke. it's a smart thing to keep at least some $$ in reserve, and sometimes it takes money to make money if you're really into accumulating gold.

when i first started, i didn't spend much, as everything seemed so pricey, so i saved up only for what i really needed (next level armor, choice skills, salvage/id kits). i just went w/ minor runes including minor vigor, thinking i'd save up for superior one day.. you know what i found out? i really didn't need sup vigor as my skills improved. knowing how to stay out of trouble as a caster is something that even an entire boatload of sup runes, +30 hp mods, etc will do for you. simply put, you don't really need that stuff!

you don't need black dye either, at least you don't need to buy it. just wait for one to finally drop.. one day it will.. and save up your gold for the important things, or the items you truly desire.

ironically, now that i'm a have, with over 1.2mil in gold, there's nothing to spend it on. i wasted gold on some nice mini pets i liked, and for a while i collected 250 stacks of sapphires and rubies simply because i liked them =)
who wants to stock ecto, they're so boring to look at!

making gold isn't too hard once you're lvl 20. just do what other people do.. farming greens is easiest, and provides a challenge w/ the right group.

but yeah, we all started once, killing lvl 1 mobs in order to accumulate that first 50g to open up storage. but for newer players who haven't logged the time to accumulate as much gold.. they all seem to want instant gratification, and when they can't have it, and someone else does have it, it's never their own fault.. it's always easier to blame someone else, be it ebay or something else.

I have played GW for 15 months. I play it actively, at least 3 hours a day. I have obtained a TOTAL amount of around 200k. That's all the money I've EVER gotten. Not that I've had at one time, that's the total amount of money I've gotten playing this game.

A while back, I bought some 15k armor for my Warrior. I thought maybe that since I was seeing a lot of threads about how easy it is to make money from normal play, I would make the money back within a month. This was, oh, a month and a half ago. I haven't even made back the 15k one piece cost me. I play normally, collecting drops, selling them, etc. And yet I haven't even made that back yet. I haven't bought a thing.

The best drop I ever got was a Celestial Longbow of Enchanting, req 9 15^50 over the double-your-fun weekend. I can't find a buyer for that ANYWHERE, not here, not in-game, even after hours upon hours of advertising.

So no, it is NOT easy to get money in this game. I can't afford anything; my weapons are drops that I got and modded from other drops. Even so, they're pathetic. Selling items is near impossible, even when you have one that you would think people would want. I can't bring up a new character because I don't have the money to support one.

But, I will never buy gold. I should, based on how easily others here come across their money, but I won't.

Also, I agree that not all people who have FoW armor bought gold. I don't think many did. I congratulate those who got it, but please don't say it was easy, and just tedious. To people like me who have the worst luck in the world with drops and money, it seems like you're bragging. It depresses the crap out of me when I realize that other people have better/better-looking items than me just because they were more lucky, and imply they didn't have to work very hard to get it.

I just needed to say how other people get better things just because they're more lucky, which is something I work every day to change...

I think you are misunderstanding. While you are right, he didn't say what you are saying.

He said "There is no benefit to exceeding your requirment." The clear implication is that if you have a req 8 weapon, "there is no benefit to exceeding" it. That is wrong. I do not believe he understands that you do more damage with more mastery, at least, he does not make it clear that he understands it.

I'm sorry but there's something wrong. Even with a full party of henchies, if you run around in any high-end area (crystal desert and beyond) for three hours you are going to end up with more than 1k worth of drops. Over 30 days thats more than 30k so what exactly are you doing? If you are standing around chatting, or playing around in ascalon then of course you won't make money. I don't think luck is a factor here.

Maybe you should have reworded the first quoted sentence to be something more like this:

Quit wasting time advertising things that you apparently don't know the value of and get out there and play !!! You can say you know the value, but obviously if you can't find a buyer anywhere, your price is too high.

GW has an economy, it is what it is, but it's there. And like all economies it changes. Farming is all a matter of timing, of just being a few weeks/days/hours in front of everyone else.

The first two weeks Sorrow's Furnace came out, I litterally made millions by farming the greens over and over through FA farming (you never even saw someone saying "lfg FA"), back then most of the greens were 60-150k. Compare that to the 10k you get now, for what amounts to the same effort.

Same for ectos, go farm them now for 6k each, when they used to be 15-18k.

In the first few days of IDS farming, it was ridiculously easy to sell them for 50-60k each, and they dropped quite a bit, particularly if you solo farmed them.

Truth is, if you're well informed (irc/forums), and try yourself every rumor you hear out there, chances are you're gonna end up with a lot of cash.

If you wait till that new farming spot/build thread has 1000 replies, and every district is full of "w/mo lf farming group", chances are you're gonna be stuck at 100k for the rest of your time.

Lol, if there's something about GW that I fail to understand then it's the fuss about rare kinky armor and stuff like that. Personally I would rather invest time in things like mission completion titles, which is an obvious sign of experience because it's something you have to earn yourself. I worked my ass of for Canthan Explorer and all of a sudden its quite easy to find a party for whatever mission/quest which adds quite a lot of fun to the game. The money I mainly invested in guild hall improvements, since they really do something. Bottom line, I'm quite happy with my yellow shing jea armour and decent playing skills.

O.o you are doing something seriously wrong if you cant make 15k in a month. I could most probably make it in a day from questing easily.

I find it astonishing that people can run into such dire money problems, or have trouble making 15K in a month, much less in a day.

I haven't speculated. I haven't bought low/sold high. I don't have some super-secret farming build. I don't have some super-secret farming location. I didn't ebay or bot or use my wonder twin powers. I've not been overly lucky with my drops (yeah, I've had quite a few nice drops, but more than my fair share of cruddy ones). But I'm fairly well-off. Not as rich as some, but at that point again where I need to sink some cash into materials and dyes to make some room, if ya get my drift.

So how did I manage this spectacular feat? I simply played the game through. I pick up all my drops, ID them, salvage the cheap ones and hope for steel/parchment/etc., sell everything else (yeah, including the cruddy white stuff). I didn't waste my money on 15K armour or FoW armour (If I can get the same level of armour by spending 10K-ish or less, then why blow the better part of 100K or 1000K on armour that gives me no inherent benefit, and doesn't really look any better? Frankly, my regular ol' 1.5K armour sets look spiffy enough in my mind. Except for the helmets. But I just hide them anyway). I don't have multiple sets of armour to dress to match my mood(except on my monk... her regular set and her 55 set).
I've never purchased an item or an upgrade or a rune that cost a significant amount of money. I simply use what drops for me, be it a collector item, be it a green, or be it a good 15>50 weapon. If something better drops for me, then great... I use that, and sell the previous item.
If I had money in my pocket, I'd sock it away in storage. I'd sell the odd item here and there. During the 55 monk craze, I had more than enough to put together a set of 55 armour... at that time a pretty big cost, considering monk runes were going for upwards of 20-30K a pop. But I knew I could make my money back fairly quickly. I knew it wasn't a loss, but rather an investment.
I didn't buy keys... until ANet added the titles. Now, it's possible to get chest runs together and sell unidentified items at a profit.
I never bought a run (if I couldn't run it myself, I'd walk or take the scenic route).

I can probably, without too much trouble, farm a couple of areas with my warrior in her 1.5K armour and her regular ol' green weapons, and pull in 20-30K an hour. Using builds that are regularly available and techniques that are regularly available.
Making money doesn't take any real luck or time or effort. Simply picking up and selling everything should net you a nice amount of cash.

I do quests, skill caps and help out guildees....and redo some of the missions I have yet to get masters on....and I get about 1k per run, do about 6-8 runs a day.....
though until this thread can by I never added it all up.....I have been using my plat to get the rest of the skills my characters need or skill caps for them....and then the new armor!....but I finally finished 2 characters and started the math...
wow if I dont spend I have about 6-8k per day.....thats a lot of plat for me!


but after I buy all the armor and skills, what will I do with the cash left over? ----save it for the next chapter if I DO buy it...otherwise, I will buy the rest of the materials for my storage !!!!

Before this thread, I never knew there was such a complaint or split between players... Sure, I knew some people ebay their items/money, but there are people like that in every game, and the idea is so absurd to me I never really thought a lot of people (in GW) actually did it. I just assumed they were junkies and played way more hours than me, hehe.

I'm not sure about the 15k per week thing, but I don't avidly farm. Farming puts me to sleep (and farming parties can be oh so mean). Sometimes when I know I want 15k armor or something (that's usually where my money goes, then the runes and dye), I'll run a few routes, do some more quests, sell some stuff that might fetch at least a few hundred gold. I have some close friends in the game who can often help or donate some of the gold if I happen to come out short by my personal deadline. I don't sit in Droknar's or wherever and spam, "CAN ANYONE GIVE ME 1.7K GOLD?!" because that's just... no. Ask your friends, not strangers, sheesh. Sometimes I donate cheap materials to people... I'm sure other people do now and then.

I am a big fan of good greens (not greens with crappy stats). I buy the cheaper ones and often ask for help from friends to farm more expensive ones. I have a few golds with mediocre mods and less than perfect req.... but I wind up not using them as much as my greens (with the exception of my Assassin's oni daggers over Shiro's Blades). I never, ever go out of my way to buy golds (picked up a few gold swords back in Prophecies, kept ONE of them). My two pve casters do use collector items though... ;D They may have no market value, but collector items are great. I mod them with what I pick up or what my friends might throw my way (my tiny guild is small but close. We ask each other if we're interesting in loot before selling).

Looking at my characters, my two most "pimped out" characters are my warrior and necro, the two earliest characters who are both over a year old now. I worked hard on my warrior for a long time, and she has more greens than she needs, a gold fellblade, and two sets of 15k armor. I earned about half of her items myself and bought about half. So although I have never had over 200k in the bank at a time, my first character ever in GW values well over 400k. I take care of my newer characters, but I am proud of my warrior.

Normally, I don't have too much time to play.. and my luck really isn't that good. You should see me trying to salvage mods off items I pick up. Not pretty. But if there's anything to be learned from this, it's that just a couple hours a day farming or doing quests (in Factions, particularly) you've neglected before, you can easily make AT LEAST 1.5k and that's pretty good if you let it accumulate. Don't go around buying things without trying to farm it yourself, first. And don't be too picky about the golds you get. ;D My fellblade was cheap despite it's low req. because it had a 15<50 (under 50% health) mod and no one else was buyin' it. This means don't dismiss anything over a 9 req... I mean, why SHOULDN'T you already have 15-16 pts in your main attribute anyway? What, do you some of you wars run around with only a 7 in axe mastery? Before max armor, don't buy armor at every post. In prophecies, I only bought armor in Ascalon, Yak's Bend, and Ventari's Sell... before I got to Droknar's. In Factions, I guess this wasn't applied as much 'cause you only go through Shing Jea before max armor on the mainland...

Selling takes more than a few hours. It takes freaking days or weeks. Be patient and everything will pay off.

You're just "bitter" and jealous. Even if a person was to "buy their armor on E-bay", that doesn't neccessarily make them a noob.

I started reading this thread, but then after posting the above reply, I got sent to this, the last page, so I haven't read it all - forgive me if I repeat stuff that has already been said. Anywho....

About the "buying FoW armor on Ebay". I assume you can't, of course, actually "buy" the armor on Ebay, but I am aware that you can buy gold. Can you also buy the services of someone to take you to the FoW? I dunno. Personally, last fall I had accumulated over 750p (in-game) so I decided to blow it on FoW armor for my Ranger. I'd been to FoW many times before, so it wasn't overly hard to get to the Forgemaster with a PUG.

I'm one of those people who can't understand why people have problems making gold in GW. 15k in a week doesn't seem out of line to me. I realize that in the earliest stages of the game, the amount of gold accumulated in the game is not that much, but later on, in the Southern Shiverpeaks, Luxon & Kurzick territory, The Tombs, Sorrow's Furnace, The Deep, Urgoz's, Ring of Fire Islands, etc., just a normal quest or mission will easily net you 1.5k in gold and common drops. If you do 10 such quests/missions in a week, there's your 15k.

And that's not counting the better drops, like silver/black dye, ectos, amber/jade/obsidian shards, gold/green weapons, etc. I you quest/mission often enough, you will get those drops.

To do this, you don't have to "farm" as such, but you do need to actually get out and do some of the higher level quests and missions, instead of standing around LA dancing naked by the fountain.

get run anywhere and one person showed a screenshot of his map with nothing opened except every outpost on the map with all blank between them

Herb he has bad luck with drops. I make what 1k from questing. Questing takes me maybe... about as long as he plays during the day. I get a lot of good drops though I have extremely awesome luck and that's how I made most of the money I did. Usually farming is a waste of my time except for XP, so I don't usually bother anymore.


As for FoW armor. I'm not a noob because I have it. I just got really lucky with drops. I spent 5 months trying to get my necros and another 5 for my monk and mesmer. Factions came out and I made a lot of money off of mods, chests, weapons, shields and what not. I get a shard almost every time I FoW and I do it 1-2 times a night. I just got really lucky and that's how I am able to afford most of the stuff I have, not some special technique that others have.

I use to be a "have"...FoW armor/stacks of ecto/cash/rare skins etc now im a "have not" and i can tell you this.. its alot more interesting playing the game as a poor person then it is a rich person.

Granted being rich as certain advantages like being able to go into high end sell and think i could buy everything on this page if i wanted to. Now im poor every gold drop brings back that little bit of excitement and dread this was seriously lacking before because most of the time i would have merch'd anything that wasnt perfect.

Moral of this essay...being poor is more fun in the long run...mind you i wont stay poor forever

GW money ladder:

Casual PvEer - Gets by but will take a long time to get perfect weapons and may never see a perfect rare skinned weapon.

Dedicated PvEer - Can generate about 15k a week purely through cash drops and trader trash. This type of player has access to higher cost items but will have to save and buy wisely to do so.

Dedicated PvEer + Casual Farming - Can generate 30k a week without any hassle. This type of player can afford pretty much anything they want. Most greens require a weeks saving tops, and a set of 15k armour or a nice gold weapon are certainly under a months work.

Dedicated Farmer + Casual PvE - This type of player can somehow find doing the same thing over and over for months on end entertaining(i'll never see how). The result of this is that they can make 100-300k in a week and will always be able to afford anything they want. FoW armour will still need to be saved for, but there are few other things they wont have disposable cash for at any given time.

Hardcore Farmer/Trader - This type of player spends an extrodinary number of hours focussing on getting rich. They will run several different farming builds across different locations. They will do chest runs. They will buy/sell items trying to make a profit on the resale. They will play the stock market sinking 100k+ into a single material and then selling it back when the market is at the right state. And they will do so for months on end. These players are where the serious money is in GW and will have several million in materials and more in other assets(extreemly rare skinned items for example).

There are of course other types of player: Ebay, Multiple HA winners and so on, but the broad classes I layed out fit pretty well.

Basically how much money you generate in GW depends on how much playtime you have and how much money you want. If you have 10 hours a week and you want to have fun, unless you get very lucky you wont be getting a fantastic gold weapon. If you have 30+ hours a week and you want fantastic gold weapons, they are not hard to get. Many people on this game have well in excess of 2000 hrs played. If 1500 of those were put into money making exercises, they will be rich and deservedly so.

Ya I feel the same way, I wasn't as rich as you but I had money. I don't mind having under 100k only now. But see I have armor I want to buy and whenever I get a lot of money and spend that and go down there's gonna be something else I wanna buy so I should just stay rich cause it's boring to make money when farming isn't fun because...I TAKE 6 MORE DMG FROM IGNITE ARROWS!

I earn money and I spend it. If I want something I'll go for it (unless it involves trading - won't touch that with the current system) and get the money/items via questing/farming. I may spend up to an hour or two an evening, depends what else I'm doing.

Problem with this game is that there are no unique armours really, if you are prepared to grind then any armour/weapon is gettable. Maybe one day if the mobs drop equippable armour pieces and we can collect truly different sets of armour. Male warrior will still be fat tho ..

Finally, someone who speaks the truth, i don't care if i'm weilding a 15^50 katana from kaineng center or my greens, how ever, to be honest, i love these, but when i got my req 8 fellblade for 25k that was 15% enchanted (perfect for that vampiric mod with mending mix :P) i was SO happy, felt like i accomplished somthing by getting, what i thought was a great deal (it even had the +30 health mod lol) so yeh, ithanks for letting people know the truth about this game and the social status' of rich/poor people

I am going to attemp to explain this with a comparison to real life.

In life as we have it today. we have people that are poor, and people who are rich. this is they way guild wars is. the people who work hard are rich and the people who dont work hard, or dont play enough time are poor.

Now why would it be a bad thing to have everyone in the world be the same?
imagine a world where everybody was rich.

It would not be very interesting at all. we would all be the same.

although this game is not real life. the same thing could be said for guild wars. if guild wars was to give everyone everything they wanted. there would be no point in playing. The game would die out.

It would be like beating the game at the start.

This is a game that NEEDS to be played in order to suceed in. alot of people complain that they "have a life" and that "only people who play 24/7 are rich"

well that is like a person withought a job saying " i want to be rich but i dont wanna go to work"

It just dosent work out.

Now the plain and simple truth is if you want rare items or fissure armor or just to be plain rich.. you are goin to have to work for it. and that means a crap load of hours.

All the people who want balance dont understand that that skill balance is what a-net meant by "balance".

if the game was to be trully balanced it would destroy pve as we know it. for there would be no reason to play. In fact if the people who want balance that want the same items,stats,armor, as us.....then hell why dont you just say you want all the quests done for you too.. cause you dont have enough time right?

why even play the game.. you have a life.. just cry to a-net and have them beat the game for you.. THATS TRUE BALANCE.

so in the end. i really am disgusted by the people who cry for any type of balance other than pvp.

you people who want everything easy should go to your boss and say " hey i want that dodge viper you have out there, its unfair that you have it and i dont, give me one cause its not fair if you dont"...

And for the record.. guild wars is a game and should have nothing to do with any type of real life.. ITS JUST A GAME.. but i had to use a comparison to make my point.

And also i spend over 50 hours at work per week. and if i can find enough time to play and gain over 200k and fissure armor withought ebay.. then anyone can. (just say goodbye to your weekends is all)
