I'm pretty sure they will have Cantha in GW2, they just decided not to have two different areas, + design, + faction rep, + whatever else, in the interests of, "Ok, you punks. No more of this Kurzick/Luxon civil war, you are ALL fighting for ME!"
And yes, I love my Rit. It was easy to level up, easy to get the faction to continue the storyline, and people still have Luxon/Kurzick guilds. It was also beautiful, no matter where I got lost. Some people just want to run-run-run, get to the next town, insta-kill everything with 12345, and not take time to soak in the scenery. IT'S A FREE MMO. You're not paying for a monthly subscription, so why not take as long as you darn well please?

Off topic but where is Cantha in relation to Tyria? Its confusing because both their coasts are on the west. They should have fliped Cantha horizontally and put it across the sea.
RPGmaniac
Cantha is south of the Tyrian Continent. Here's a map showing where they are in relation to each other (except for the Far Shiverpeaks, wonder why it hasn't been updated yet).

i think the lore came out of a necessity to limit GW2 to tyria at first. they had to tie up elona and cantha. anyway, i thought the fate of the sunspears was much much worse than the fate of cantha.

Looking pass the FedEx quests, the butt ugly city, tight spaces and lack of paths, I spent a good hour and a half exploring and trying to find the next city to save my place only to come to a nice pair of locked gates.
Bye-bye Factions.
I had actually tried it out on a guildie's account before buying it to avoid wasting money. Have only decided about 2 and a half months ago to finally get it and that was just to try out the Assassin. He only made it to the Marketplace, but I decided to take my war and ele through anyway. To this day the only thing I like about it is the Jade Sea.
I actually prefer to read the story of Shiro on Wiki than play Factions.

Personally, Cantha has the most beautiful content of all the chapters (and GW:EN). Unfortunately, it also has the worst storyline and gameplay. The most annoying missions in the game are all in Factions, and the locked gates are just painful. However, the henchmen are great, and the individual zones in the Jade Sea and Echovald Forest are rather fun.
Seeing as how GW2 is going to have entirely different gameplay (from the sound of it), Cantha might just become the best are in the game. Hopefully it will be available in at least an expansion.
EDIT:
Oh yeah, forgot about that - agreed! There are only a handful of armors in Factions, elite and normal included, that I don't like. Everything else is amazing, and set the content bar apparently too high for the rest of the releases. Hell, the model for Warrior Kurzick has been re-skinned 4 more times (Sunspear, Sunspear 15k, Asuran, Monument top) it was so good.

Omg Cantha = Communist China ?

Factions Locked Gates = Result of people complaining about people getting run through the game.
Nightfall Partially locked gates = Result of people complaining about locked gates and wanting a compromise (more similar to Crystal Desert).
I personally found Factions really fun. With exception to the really annoying mazelike design of the city.
I hope GW2 eventually touches on it, I'd like to see what it would look like finally united!

Factions had AB and that is well worth it. One of the only fun things to do anymore.

Speaking of which, I hope we can create Canthan-looking characters in GW2.

I'm not fond of some of the structure of Factions, but I do like Cantha and the people and classes of the second and third chapters are both much more interesting than the first.

Hm, factions wasn't that bad. Actually, the only thing I don't like in Factions is the Kaineng City area with it's undercity. Very repetitive and boring level design.
But all the rest of Cantha I like a lot. The Shing Jea area, the beautiful Kurzick forest with it's gothic looks and the Luxon lands. Also the competitive missions and allicance battles are a great addition to the Guild Wars universe. The possibility to conquer a town with your alliance for some unique benefits is something you won't find in any other chapter.
So, maybe as stand-alone game it lacks, but as expansion to the existing game I thing Factions surely rocks.

Factions is prob my favorite, too, at least it's where I still spend most of my time.
The only thing that really put me off it, at least initially, was the whole timed-mission thing but, meh, I got used to it.
Being able to fast-track a char to lvl 20, take them to Elona to grab the heros then go back to work on the story just makes it even more fun.

I still never get these people that think factions is repetitive and crystal desert isn't, but meh, can't argue taste. I love factions, the closed gates don't bother me at all, I just play. The only thing that sucks is the 10k faction you need to improve in the storyline. I like AB, so I usually play that when I need that, but people who hate AB get shafted with running faction quests and that's pretty boring.
OK, factions voice acting is horrendous, agreed...
I HAVE RETURNED, MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Worst part about factions is the imperial sanctum mission, uncounterable party wipe FTL!

It has the best armours and lots of fantastic scenaries, this is my opinion anyway!

Yeah, I suspect Cantha and Elona will be released later on as expansions, much the same way as they are now.
While the barriers to running through Factions is a bit of a bore, the game isn't that long that its a problem.
Factions itself was a short game, and seperating it by Kurz/Lux means even less content that is needed to progress.
The 2 party missions can also be a bit of a pain.
While there are bits of Factions that is not very good, the campaign as a whole is competent. The one thing I really want to kill someone over is the horrible movie cutscenes.
They are the worst cutscenes I have seen in games in recent years. Someone needs to be shot for doing and approving them.

There's plenty of dragon imagery in Canthan architecture, and there's this massive dragon head in the ground in SunJiang District (mission), that reminded me of the frozen dragon and stuff.
I would not be surprised that one of the GW2 dragons will pay a visit to Cantha.

If Cantha isn't in GW2.... I'm not buying it.
Simple as.
Factions was the best of the campaigns by miles, IMHO.
It wasn't unnecessarily spacious, but it was by far the most graphically impressive (until parts of GW:EN, and still is more asthetically pleasing). The creature designs were more innovative, the music better...
Ok.... I'm getting carried away.
The point is... I only really have Prophecies and Nightfall for the skills and weapon / armour skins. Factions is the only campaign I actually play through with all my characters, and the rest tend to just get abandoned.
It is bad enough to hear that the Kurzick houses were crushed out of their cultural identity.... but that Cantha should be cut off completely is too much.
If Guild Wars 2 doesn't have Cantha.... I won't have Guild Wars 2. End of Story.

I was already considering NOT buying it based on the reports that GW2 won't be instanced.
No instances = bad = I don't wanna play it.

I'm not that scary lol
Even if they remove Cantha as a continent, that clearly states it's people and culture lives on elsewhere. Much like Ascalon, the nomadic Canthans will settle somewhere and create their own little 'chinatown' per se.
If they havent removed it, you'll likely set foot there in GW2 anyways, I think they may be striving AWAY from the multitude of expansion packs, much like they want to do away with the 'instanced explorable regions.'

That aside... I'm still not going to buy GW2 if it lacks Cantha.
Instead... I vote that GW2 be changed to be Cantha ONLY.... and include the eastern parts of the continent (past Maishang Hills and Rhea's Crater) that weren't included in Factions.

so, factions was the best GW imo.

I loved cantha myself, only didn't like the design of the imperial city... slums ftl
but i do reckon that gates were needed in cantha, it would just be to short if it could be runned. but wether it will be in gw 2.. mehh not sure i should be thinking about gw2 already

I have not been a fan of Factions - I haven't minded the closed gates because I usually play the game through and don't get runs - there are two main complaints
1. Factions = "Fun in the Sewers" - that tight, dark twisting part of the map just turned me off
2. It seemed as if Anet wanted to force PvE players to PvP - (not to start that discussion) - I have never been a fan of PvP so that portion of the game was lost to me
I have yet to get a char past the 10k faction portion of the game - may still - it's a while until GW2

Factions was a PvP lovefest (just as Gwen was a PvE lovefest). Though it's almost a must have for AB, newly introduced PvE skills from kurz/lux.
Factions is annoying as mess. I still haven't beaten it, as I have beaten Proph/NF.

Like many here, I agree that GW2 without Cantha would be a terrible loss. Factions is such a nice campaign, maps look like 3D maze sometimes and are extremely innovative (the urban environment, the dark forest of Echovald, the jade sea). Prophecies and Nightfall are more mainstran in that regard, I would understand why some people may find Factions a bit less appealing (dark, sewers, afflicted), but I would suggest they try a bit harder to follow Shiro's story and the complicated structure (though I don't like the effect of the Kurwick/Luxon dychotomy on the population).
I was sad when reading in PC Gamer's article on GW2 that Cantha would be left out, alone in their secluded world. Very very sad if Cantha disappears, unless GW2 provides something better in that vein.

Factions is my personal favourite of the GW episodes released so far. I even enjoy the labyrinth of dark alleyways in the city
I would love to be able to return to Cantha in GW2. It's such a rich continent with a gritty atmosphere. I know the current lore says that Cantha will be otherwise isolated in the GW2 timeframe and that it's unlikely that we'd get much of a chance to go there in the first instalment of GW2, but it's something that I would really love to see in an expansion.

we don't know that its not gunna be in gw2 and even if they do take it out its not because factions was a bad game.
Well all the other game's continents are connected so it would of been stupid to take out of one of there areas
