Wow was Factions so bad?
ShadowsRequiem
Factions was a lot of fun with AB and new pvp games you could play. Though i'd have to say traveler is 100% right about it being so boxed in. There is such a HUGE part of the map that cannot be explored, in proph there where zone you didnt have to pass through or go to for a quest.
The whole afflicted thing made me think I was playing some weird ass version of halo

I just went back to Factions to try and get some elite skills. Running along to get the elite, getting close, oh----> those gates!
Now must go back and redo it as Luxon. They could have taken out all the gates once you finsih the game. After all the endless mazes of the city, the gates, just really pull my chain.
Other than that, the armour is great, the scenery is amazing, and the monsters are probably the most imaginative in the game.

Fedex-ing around Kaineng City put me off. You have no idea how exctied I was to get into pongmei valley and see some decent scenery (no offense but ugly brown building after another is boring and depressing)

IMO Factions was the best campaign, and is still the best campaign.
I love the environments, the focused plot, the focused movement from one area to another and the fact that there are loads of quests.
When I went into Kaineng Center with 2 quests and came out with 20 I was very pleased!

I just spent the last week or so playing through Factions with a new character and enjoyed it. I must admit that I did avoid most of the sideline Fedex quests, they bored me the first time round. And popping over to Elona to get heroes probably helped with the enjoyment too.
Although the city slum area had a very depressing feel to it, it made a nice (in a strange way) change from the usual sunny, happy, open spaces. Running around the city can be annoying at times, but I didn't find it that bad.
The things I dislike about Factions are the time based missions. I like to take my time, maybe mess around during missions, and still be able to get the highest reward. Glad that NF have optional bonus in missions. Also, I dislike the locked gates/outpost. I remember playing Prophecies as a newbie and being able to leave an outpost, pick any direction, go and explore, popping into new outposts along the way. I was disappointed that I couldn't do this in Factions.
For me, Prophecies is by far the best and Factions level pegging with NF. No idea about EotN, yet to get that.

I strongly prefer Factions to Prophecies.
The lands are prettier, I'm not interested in sequence breaking, so the gates don't bother me, and I find the storyline better than Prophecies.
The only bad thing is Kaineng City. But that's only for a short while.
Maybe I'm just weird...

Sorry, Yes Factions was that bad. The Asian ghetto theme complete with homeless people .. enough said. Not to mention that GW sucks at looking UP and DOWN and Anet hasnt figured out what a pain in the ass it is when they make maps that require it. Or how about it taking 2 days to get into Jade quarry so you can map it and finish the legendary cartography title! That was one of my favorites .. had to fill both sides with friends to finish the title. Clue police Anet it is a dead chapter make some areas explorable or lower percent needed for 100% cartography.
Etta
Most of the voice acting in Factions are awful, danika and shiro are on top of the crap list. Apart from that, not much else is really wrong with the game.

I should probably make the voices some language I don't understand for Factions, actually. Then I can be like all those people watching Anime and raising their noses to English dubs, even though their complete lack of understanding for the language puts them in a highly dubious position to judge the original content anyway. I bet those Italian dubs will sound pretty good to me if I have no idea how they should sound. It's going to be amazing!
Edit: also, Etta, you need to include Togo in that list. Hearing all three of those in one cut-scene would probably be enough to make me want to punt my cat out a window.

Love that campaign.
Probably also nostalgia because Factions came out right at the moment when I was liking GW the most. And the Ritualist was just insane back then.
I absolutely love that place. It doesn't matter how many times I play though it - it is just fun.
Although remove Arborstone. Remove, remove, remove! Falling rocks, the need to carry an item AND Danika having this INSANE love for getting stuck just make it a pain in the ass! A serious pain!
Arborstone is a bloody disaster!

I started out GW in Factions and wenn i bought profhessies it was a big let down.Sooo slow...(getting better now finally reached the desert), did like presearing..........have to see about the rest,so far its a pain going tru profh.
In Factions there are far more mobs, more action, lesswalking around, less corners to get stuck in, the coopmisions are better(love the masters timelimit and no need to read 2 wikipages about what the bonus ect is).I consider Factions my home in GW, even with al the emoes in the monastary. Im in GW just to kill stuff wich is easier and faster in Factions.

I liked factions, but it took ANet a year to develop it in GW1.
I don't want to wait an extra year for GW2, so if they decide not to include it at day 1, I'm not too upset.

"In Cantha, the successor of emperor Kisu defeats the warring Kurzick and Luxon factions and reunites Cantha under one banner. Under his strong leadership, Cantha forces all non-human races off their lands and fortifies its borders, becoming much more isolationist than before. The few Canthans who oppose the new empire are exiled to Kryta. When Arah resurfaces, the Corsair (pirates from Nightfall who used to pray on trade vessels) ships that used to take refuge in that archipelago are corrupted by the dragon to form a deadly fleet of black ships that seal off all trade routes between Cantha and the other continents. At the start of the Guild Wars 2 story, there has been no contact with mainland Canthans for a generation."

Factions was always my favorite.
The beginning was a little rough, but once I settled into the groove and got to Vizunah square, and I was having a lot of fun.

I don't understand why people are so bent out of shape about the look and feel of Kaineng City. It was supposed to look like that. The claustrophobic little streets and cramped, filthy shacks were supposed to give the atmosphere of a dangerous, unpleasant city that had plenty of problems even before the runaway plague started turning its citizens into freaky berserkers.
Cantha is supposed to be in turmoil. Between the Am Fah and Jade Brotherhood tearing the city apart and the Luxons and Kurzicks tearing the country apart, not to mention the bloated bureaucracy holding back any real progress, it's already in deep trouble. Add Shiro's return to the mix, and they need a hero. Namely, you.
With that said, the locked gates are irritating. The faction farming requirement would be WAY worse if you couldn't store it and let your entire account take advantage of one character's work, but still. I fought my way to the hatchery only to find that the idiot at the gate won't let me in until I farm over 5000 more faction for a group I don't support, then save a bunch of stupid turtles in an escort quest. My main character's already a Protector of Cantha; I just want my little moa mini dammit.
None of the voice acting in GW is really all that great, so to me Factions didn't stand out. Vizu actually pissed me off way more than Togo, though. I don't understand all the Togo hate when there's "You can't kill me, Shiro! I'M ALREADY... DEAD!" is in the game.
It's not my favorite, but I don't get why everyone's all "WORST. CAMPAIGN. EVER." about it. The enemies are cool, the storyline's not so bad even if you see the twist coming from a mile away, some of the greens and skills are awesome, and I LOVE the Rit class. Plus, it's got some of the best armor in the game, IMO. My E/Mo's elegant elite Canthan > any amount of glorified metal bikinis and microminis.

Factions has its place, and i do like it a very little more than NF.
The good ole days of proph was awesome. it took FOREVER to get to max level not fresh of of "noob island". Assassins were played way wrong and are just now starting to be accepted. Ritualists are way over powered and heaven forbid they nerf the class that is way over powered instead of nerfing everything else. The scenery is less than desirable, giant slums, seas of blue/green glass.....
It seems very short with content, and they mix pvp into pve. It was designed for the "casual" player, in my opinion and it incorporated the polar opposite of proph.
The order in which I like campaigns is: proph, EotN, and NF/ factions tie for dead last.
As far as cantha not being in the starting of GW2 is fine with me.

Anyway, yeahalthough I'm an old beta vet, because of that Factions is still my fave, quicker to lvl 20, I liked the story and after 18 months playing prophecies (including beta's) I was bored shitless of Prophecies and I still am

I liked Factions...
I liked the story.
I liked the missions. (Nothing compares to Vizunah Square!)
I liked the regions (even Kaineng City and Undercity).
I like the armors.
I did not mind the linear/locked doors.
The only thing I didn't like in Factions were some of the voices of the NPCs: Danika and Vizu were especially annoying and jarringly wrong for the parts they were playing. Danika sounded like Fran Drescher at her "The Nanny" worst and Vizu sounded like a bad Marlene Dietrich impersonator.

Cantha is by far most interesting land in whole GW.
Especially Echovald Forrest and Jade Sea.
Too bad we wont be able to jump around there.

Factions is starting to grow on me, now that finished both Prophecies and NF. I don't see myself taking my other chars all the way through NF. I started two characters in Factions and is awesome to be able to level up fast. I will definately take all my characters through Factions for sure.
Things I don't like:
- Timed missions
- Co-op missions
- Closed gates. I really hope that GW2 has open areas just like prophecies.

Let me ask you this you would like to run or be runt right.
IMO that whas the flaw in Prophecies the runs sorry but this is just the way i think about it you can't convince me that runners where a plan in the design of the game.
Prophecies is only 4 missions to finish the game

I dislike closed gates because it doesn't allow you to explore other areas or go to certain outposts. Closed gates forces you to do the mission. I just prefer the sense of freedom and not being forced to do something, but thats just me.

I dislike Cantha from all the reasons counter here + it looks nothing what common logic suggest a land mass could look like. Geography FTL

Prophecies had to much freedom you could play the game i a way that it wasn't designt to be
But let not go into it to deep course i think and always do that closed gates where FTW.

Factions with heroes is fine, Factions with just henchmen was... unpleasant, I'd think.
It's pretty clear from GW2 prepress that the first game is going to be based in Tyria, with subsequent expansions opening up Cantha and Elona.

I don't see why they have to get rid of Cantha at all. They are the creators, they could change it in any way necessary. I thought GW2 was about aNet doing things they can't with the current GW universe not creating further restrictions on themselves.
I personally was hoping for Tyria, Cantha, Elona, "Utopia," and Orr to be involved in GW2. They should spend more time working on GW2 and be all inclusive instead of throwing out an entire continent and culture they created.
Also, people shouldn't hate on the continent and culture just because you didn't like the game.

i find it odd to see so many people whine about "locked gates". i can get from lvl1 to 20 in 2 1/2 hours in factions, and have it beat in 8, if not less.
i find it to be my favorite campaign, and in fact, so much that i remade a lot of my characters into canthans when it came out.
i love the crowded, city streets, the seemingly more advanced civilization, the asian influences, and most of all, the story. i find canthas story to be the best of all, with proph second, and gwen third. nf doesnt even get mentioned, because it was simply long, boring, uninspiring, and most of all, a horrid story. i like sunspears, i love the look of Kodash/Vabbi... but so much desert, and even more lame story=boring.
i really hope the canthans beat the undead in GW2, and get to be in an expansion, so that we can see the sweet culture re-instated into the GWs universe.
