Factions is prob my favorite, too, at least it's where I still spend most of my time.
The only thing that really put me off it, at least initially, was the whole timed-mission thing but, meh, I got used to it.
Being able to fast-track a char to lvl 20, take them to Elona to grab the heros then go back to work on the story just makes it even more fun.
Wow was Factions so bad?

I still never get these people that think factions is repetitive and crystal desert isn't, but meh, can't argue taste. I love factions, the closed gates don't bother me at all, I just play. The only thing that sucks is the 10k faction you need to improve in the storyline. I like AB, so I usually play that when I need that, but people who hate AB get shafted with running faction quests and that's pretty boring.
OK, factions voice acting is horrendous, agreed...
I HAVE RETURNED, MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Worst part about factions is the imperial sanctum mission, uncounterable party wipe FTL!

Yeah, I suspect Cantha and Elona will be released later on as expansions, much the same way as they are now.
While the barriers to running through Factions is a bit of a bore, the game isn't that long that its a problem.
Factions itself was a short game, and seperating it by Kurz/Lux means even less content that is needed to progress.
The 2 party missions can also be a bit of a pain.
While there are bits of Factions that is not very good, the campaign as a whole is competent. The one thing I really want to kill someone over is the horrible movie cutscenes.
They are the worst cutscenes I have seen in games in recent years. Someone needs to be shot for doing and approving them.

If Cantha isn't in GW2.... I'm not buying it.
Simple as.
Factions was the best of the campaigns by miles, IMHO.
It wasn't unnecessarily spacious, but it was by far the most graphically impressive (until parts of GW:EN, and still is more asthetically pleasing). The creature designs were more innovative, the music better...
Ok.... I'm getting carried away.
The point is... I only really have Prophecies and Nightfall for the skills and weapon / armour skins. Factions is the only campaign I actually play through with all my characters, and the rest tend to just get abandoned.
It is bad enough to hear that the Kurzick houses were crushed out of their cultural identity.... but that Cantha should be cut off completely is too much.
If Guild Wars 2 doesn't have Cantha.... I won't have Guild Wars 2. End of Story.

I was already considering NOT buying it based on the reports that GW2 won't be instanced.
No instances = bad = I don't wanna play it.

I'm not that scary lol
Even if they remove Cantha as a continent, that clearly states it's people and culture lives on elsewhere. Much like Ascalon, the nomadic Canthans will settle somewhere and create their own little 'chinatown' per se.
If they havent removed it, you'll likely set foot there in GW2 anyways, I think they may be striving AWAY from the multitude of expansion packs, much like they want to do away with the 'instanced explorable regions.'

mods, never ban this man again plz |
That aside... I'm still not going to buy GW2 if it lacks Cantha.
Instead... I vote that GW2 be changed to be Cantha ONLY.... and include the eastern parts of the continent (past Maishang Hills and Rhea's Crater) that weren't included in Factions.

I have not been a fan of Factions - I haven't minded the closed gates because I usually play the game through and don't get runs - there are two main complaints
1. Factions = "Fun in the Sewers" - that tight, dark twisting part of the map just turned me off
2. It seemed as if Anet wanted to force PvE players to PvP - (not to start that discussion) - I have never been a fan of PvP so that portion of the game was lost to me
I have yet to get a char past the 10k faction portion of the game - may still - it's a while until GW2

Like many here, I agree that GW2 without Cantha would be a terrible loss. Factions is such a nice campaign, maps look like 3D maze sometimes and are extremely innovative (the urban environment, the dark forest of Echovald, the jade sea). Prophecies and Nightfall are more mainstran in that regard, I would understand why some people may find Factions a bit less appealing (dark, sewers, afflicted), but I would suggest they try a bit harder to follow Shiro's story and the complicated structure (though I don't like the effect of the Kurwick/Luxon dychotomy on the population).
I was sad when reading in PC Gamer's article on GW2 that Cantha would be left out, alone in their secluded world. Very very sad if Cantha disappears, unless GW2 provides something better in that vein.

Factions is my personal favourite of the GW episodes released so far. I even enjoy the labyrinth of dark alleyways in the city
I would love to be able to return to Cantha in GW2. It's such a rich continent with a gritty atmosphere. I know the current lore says that Cantha will be otherwise isolated in the GW2 timeframe and that it's unlikely that we'd get much of a chance to go there in the first instalment of GW2, but it's something that I would really love to see in an expansion.
