Canthan Grandmaster Cartographer in a day - What's A-Net going to do about it?
Saraphim
Yeh I did, tbh I was done with this thread but Gaile posted on it again today stating that there was "heated discussion aimed at" the OP. Which while true, goes both ways. Torqual was also using flammatory content in return (and to be fair yes I'd get pissed off with the usual QQ moar! responses if I'd spent a fair bit of time typing out my initial gripe/whine/rant/discussion topic).
And so it floated to the top again.
Unfortunately, depsite the many other threads on ingame issues that people would like to see 'noticed' by the devs this one seems to strike a chord with Gaile. Maybe there's a secret minipet prize in GW2 for Legendary Cartographers.
Edit: response to TheRaven.
/must type faster.

Look i said i played the game normaly and mapped along the way never did it separately, and no it wasn`t hard. But when i got to 97% things started to be harder so i managed to get all 3 maps to 99.x% and then turned into a problem i couldn`t solve no matter what i did! But let`s face it once u get to that % you are "done" by all means. Then i took Texmod if i didn`t do that i would be still on that % this day (part`s that were messing on my map was let`s just say ridiculous, i would never think that is fog there!).That tool is made only to help people scrape last bits of maps no to be used to uncover map from like 60% that`s just lame! And for the first post the kidds who annoyed poster with 1 day finnish were liars !!!

Here's the wiki post that may help. (It is linked to materials that are months old, so don't mind the commentary above -- those issues are fully resolved.) But I do understand that the larger issue is the question of whether the use of the mod in this instance is acceptable. A title once took months and a lot of ingenuity to acquire. Now, it can be obtained with virtually zero ingenuity (other than finding the mod and installing it ) and in a matter of days. Does that concern us? Would we ban someone who "exploited" the game in that manner? I honestly don't think so, but I truly do not know. I have sent an email to Mike O'Brien asking him specifically about this. Again, I don't think that anyone needs to be overly concerned about this, but for your peace of mind, I will inquire and get back to you with the answer to this particular question. Please understand that this thread did not "stir the pot" or cause us to place any undue attention on this question, or on modding as a whole. There is some rather heated commentary directed at the OP, where in fact his question is both practical and philosophical, and is nothing about which we were previously unaware. Also, it didn't cause a focus, or the arming of some sort of "ban gun" or "nerf bat." |
It'd be useful for a mod or Torqual to put this in the Front. (EDIT)
Also, it concerns me that Gaile seems not to understand what this mod does, as someone still has to hug every wall to get 100%. And the idea that before the mod, having to compare your map with another map to find the places you may have missed is considered "ingenuity"... well, I'll let others sort that out.
To me, the mod is an example of ingenuity. Before that, it was based more on tedious rework.
Bubby7
So then here the question....How is this cheating or an UnFAIR adavtage to anyone? Since it was put out there to help EVERYONE...I could understand it if only it was done in the event to help only them selfs or other in there Guild...Like I sayed I dont know how to use the mods an I am not going for the titled,But it is great that other out there have thought of a way too help other who are trying to get that title...

I still don't understand how this mod "cheapens" the Title, anymore than guildwiki "cheapens" Protector titles by giving decent walkthroughs.
Maybe Anet should edit out all guides in their wiki as well...

At the core, this mod changes the color and border of the fog. That's all. It makes the distinction between "explorable" fog and "unexplorable" fog more obvious.
If Anet's intent for the GMC title was to ask folks to spend endless hours trying to figure out which piece of fog should be able to made to disappear... well then yes the mod in question goes around that and provides an advantage. However, Anet gave us leeway in setting the 100% to lower then the actual 100%.
I am concerned that Gaile may believe this title can now be gained with "zero ingenuity"... So is the GMC title supposed to be a reflection of my ability to compare screen shots of maps, is it supposed to be a reflection of my OCD ability to walk at 45% angles to every wall in the game, is it supposed to demonstrate my ability to use the wikis and forums to find every glitchable location so that I can eek out an extra 0.1%?
Or is it supposed to reflect my accomplishment in "seeing" all the amazing locations and sites within the GW world?

Not much there to get riled up about. The title itself is largely about doing it as fast and efficiently as possible, since its pixel scraping. To willingly avoid helpful resources isnt really admirable in this case as all it does is extend the time, though no, there is nothing wrong with doing it trial and error fashion.

Nothing about EGC elonian cart took months in fact it took me 6 days to get the title NO MODDING NO PHOTOSHOP.
gone
If they do something about it, let them do it here as well. No help/map comparisions, take down the carto threads, etc..etc..etc..
just because SOMEONE does it in a few hours, doesn't mean EVERYONE can.
-get over it. it's a title, in a game. no one twisted your arm to go for it.
I sense a bit of....'why didn't I think of that' and it doesn't really even apply.

THANK YOU GUYS who made this mod,I dont have the title but it looks great good JOB!!!
the_jos
Thread shifted from arguments against/for Texmod to 'should we implement it in the game'.
While I don't oppose Texmod as tool (as stated before) I would not like the mod implemented in the game.
The reason for that is I'm comparing Texmod to comparing (or having someone compare) with a graphical program, both are external methods.
Both are ways to 'cheat' the title, but both have value to find the last spots.
Some first time explorer running Texmod all the time is probably slower than someone who has worked on exploration titles before.
The only thing it helps with is making sure you don't have to revisit an area.
That's not a feature that should be in the game.
If you want your exploration title easy, go ahead.
But don't ask for features in the game to make it easier than it is already.

I do fault you a little bit for not checking that their story was even possible before repeating it. Especially since it seems to have incited the Gaile Grey Edition of the Spanish Inquisition against a popular and beloved tool...
Anywho, I applaud your change of attitude on this topic. More importantly than that, I applaud your broader change of attitude towards titles and "accomplishments" in GW. Perhaps for the first time, you're playing the game for yourself and not for impressing or outdoing other people. That's a very good thing, and I congratulate you for it.
Karyuu
Then you don't understand why people use texmod, the_jos. It's not about making this title a piece of cake to attain, it's to make up for a bad design. I disagree that dealing with the default fog as it is, is the optimal way to go about in a cartography system. I would very much like to see it changed.
People use texmod because they feel the game itself isn't doing a good enough job when it comes to helping them work this system.

What I dislike is someone who hasnt even tried exploring, or put any effort in using the normal mechanism to use the mod right from the start. People should atleast attempt to explore to an extent before they resort to using a mod like this to make it "easier". I can also relate to someone who has 5 characters and doesnt want to do it all again the harder way. But if its your first charactera and you use the mod from the word go, then that is "lazey" because you havent even tried. That is what I personally have issues with. Aslong as a person tries the existing system to explore to a fare %, then I dont mind. But I think the mod should only be used by those who are frustrated and in need of serious aid. Not just for the first-timer to jump right in and uncover all edges really easily. |
MithranArkanere
I seriously doubt they got the 100% in one day. You can't absolutely make all 13 missions in less than 3..4 hours. Then add the work of running all arround.
Probably they had 60..90% or so.
Probably they had 60..90% or so.

FYI - you can get 100% of cantha without glitching into Eredon's terrace or even being a Canthan born char (with access to the monastery).
Anet has no need to "correct" their game - the actual map is more then the 100% needed for the title.

Dev121
For The Record: Titles are optional meaning you cant complain about them, if you bought an expansion with them title exclusive then you may have 'some' complain but still its not worth it. Anet wont do anything and really should be focusing on other stuff, if the higher ranks became easy to get some how then they may interfere but for map titles doubtful.
Fitz Rinley
DeVaNeY121,
As of the implementation of HoM titles are no longer optional - they are now almost the exclusive point of play. All game functions now result in moving toward HoM and maximizing titles for points applied to GW2.
And BobRath - you are wrong. I have been through Cantha, wall by wall. I have been inside them, behind them, stuck in them, stuck floating above them, and the only point of clouds that equals the 0.3% I do not have is in Shing Jea starter area that was still locked off during the Dragon Festival. Could I accomplish it with the Eredon Terrace glitch? Yes. Will I do so? No. I have JQ, the Foreign and Local quarters, the faction farming challenge mission areas, etc. When GW puts the system in place that ought to be there, and IT shows me where to get the 0.3% outside of Shing Jea, then I will believe you. Until then, No one who tells me it can be done normally while skipping a half-dozen to a dozen places is credible.

Don't see anything wrong about it...
It's just like those public exams. You can study it your own way, or you can just grab an exam guilebook and cram on that.
Frankly if the mod promotes doing it the proper way via clearing the fog in each area then it is probably even better than finding exploits to glitch into unintended areas to fake percentages.

What the hell. I guess these same people would say it's wrong to use your level 20's to get the bonus missions in Ascalon. "They should have done it when they were level 8..."

For the Cantha area you can go into the pvp arena at Shing Jea, and when they have festivals you can go all around the back area that is not normally open for the non canthan born. It can be tough getting the 16 people together for Jade Quary and Fort Aspenwood. I managed to talk enough people into sticking around and we would switch sides. Take your time and remap all the mission areas when you can, and also be sure to fully explore all the towns and go into all the challenge missions that you possibly can. Also when you go into beat Shiro get your self banished and scrape the edge there as well. I am not Canthan born and with out using any glitches, or mods or anything but hard work and a lot of time managed to get it.
super strokey
anyone know how to do it in vista for cartographer?

I'm sure this has been brought up once before, but I will do it again anyways -
What is unfair was people charging around 100k to help people get their last spot. I've used the mod a couple of times but not till I was in the 90% of my title and I still haven't finished cause I could care less about the whole title wh0ring thing. For me the game is about fun and the titles mean something to whoever worked the hardest to get them.
There are two types of people. Those that announce their great contribution to the less fortunate and the silent giver.
I am sure it means a lot more to the silent giver than it does the guy with the bull horn.

Fitz, I'm assuming the 0.3% you are talking about is the section only Canthan characters can get at?
You don't need this to get 100% without JQ or Eredon Terrace. I got to 99.9% without either, and my mesmer is a non-Canthan character. More to the point, friendly people here said I was missing another area up in the final mission that should have netted me my last couple of pixels, and it was a matter of pixels because simply entering JQ got me the last little bit I needed, who knows how much extra can be got running around the full extent of JQ (both sides), maybe 0.7%?

JQ was 0.5% when I mapped it from both sides. been there done that. Scraped in Shiro's little prison. Walked all the walls in every town methodically. Went through every area killing all and scraping walls til I had the perimeter and then filled every path with red dots and scraped the sides of large obstacles (hills/lakes/etc.).

Why can't we leave TexMod alone? God.... poor TexMod... poor modding community.

In any game, out of game mods, or new updates come to make an accomplishment easy to, well, accomplish.
This is nothing new in any MMO, or any computer game for that matter. The debate is endless on where it goes too far. Sadly, no one can really draw the line.
Person X gets a title when the game first comes out. Person Y gets the title when the game is two years old, and has many updates/mods to make it easier for them. Person X complains he had to do more work. Fact of the matter: Gradually, things become easier because people adapt. This happens in any game. You can label it anything you want. Sleezy, cheap, underhanded, but it doesn't matter.
Gripe at Guildwiki for posting guides on the same title. They all just make it easier.

I would suggest that you reread and understand something. There's very little position-taking in my comments. I have said that there is a question, from some, about this mod, and have expressed what those who question the use of the mod feel about the issue. This is a hot topic, for certain players, and I was specifically asked to address the matter. I provided a synopsis that a few forum members took as opinion. I forwarded a question to one of the co-founders out of respect for those who held positions on both sides of the question.
Undoubtedly my verbiage could have been clearer. Certainly I might better have chosen to be uninvolved in the thread (despite more than one request for me to post). But most definitely, readers should have been a little less hasty to make assumptions about what I was trying to convey.
As we have said before, the only judge of whether a mod is acceptable or unacceptable is ArenaNet. Mike has been out of town and has not had an opportunity to discuss this particular matter with me, but I would judge that the fact that he has not done so means that the mod is not considered to be harmful. I will let you know if there is more to say on the subject.
