What is the most pathetic scamming attempt that you encountered?

Yeah, I know what that is, but my point is that the SS doesn't actually show anything. He could just be trying to run really fast for all we know.

Some of these posts I will treasure in my mind for a total of 15 minutes, to replace another treasured memory. Then I'll move on and forget about em.

Early factions when Mini Kunnavang was at it's hottest I saw two messages in KC.

WTS: Chkkr's Flatbow 15k!!!

Not from the same person however. SO I'm think wth? How can someone so conviently be selling a Chkkr's Flatbow in the same district where one wants to trade a mini kunnavang for it while it's 100k + XXX ecots?

I add both of the people to my party list and sure enough, they're in the same Guild.

(For those of you who don't get it the person with the green wanted to make quick cash and used his buddy as a decoy who probably didn't even have the mini to do it.)

P.S. Actually I thought it was a pretty good scam.

Now what would be funny is if you possesed the item the second person was advertising for.

The ss just shows the guy requesting the person to drop the item, I believe.

I was once WTB ectos and shards, and some guy pmed and he told me he knew a way to duplicate my items, it required opening of the trade window and the use of a mesmer skill cant remember the name, but this exploit only worked once per account. So i told him i would duplicate some bones, and if it worked, i would double the other stuff on another account, he went crazy and wanted me to duplicate the ectos no matter what, after a few minutes of bashing me he gave up and moved on.

Saw someone saying: WTB all bronze daggers 100k+10e for r9's!

Noticed a pair on my mule earlier and 100k+10e is amazing for a pair of crappy bronze daggers so I pm'd him saying I could sell him a set..I get "No thx" back

Than I see someone else in the same guild as him saying:WTS Bronze daggers r9 80k

Team scam ftl?

Someone in Shinj Jea tonight trying to sell "an uber special rare christmas weapon - candy cane axe"...

Gahh, Ive finally fallen for a scam myself... damn.

WTB 16 Ectos 5K each

Sold them for 8K and 2 Okish weapons because his Inventory was "full".

Loss = about 52K (but only because one of the swords had a 30HP and a 20/20 Mod which I could sell at 10K each)

Lesson learnt... dont trade Tired... and never trade after the offer has been modified, no matter what, if someone wants to trade with me, they will have to restart trade if they want to change anything.

On the upside I wanted to sell and saw an amusing scammer whcih I didnt even need to think about to know it was a scam;

im a old runner of Gate of madness, im running 4 guys for 6-8k each, is a long and hard run (40 mins) and they must pay after Shiro (last boss, Lich, is easy), after they agree with that at begin.

a guy from France didnt payed, he said he dont know english (a lie) and he have no money in inventory, and we all lost 1 hour and 30 minutes waiting for him to leave (CUZ I DONT FINISH with scammers). Really i dont saw in my life some like that, prolly only criminals have a so bad behavior.

prolly ill report him, but i know anet wont care. The others guys in party have reported him i think...

he lost connection and we killed fast Lich before he reconect lol... i think he didnt get the quest, right? he was at the end in party but "gray" and at a moment he disapeared (he wasnt online too). I gave back all the gold while waiting and all left without paying, who care anyway...

Heres a real scam...first...im at beacons just lookin for a droks run and this sin randomly pmes me and says.

Me: Sure [I knew he was scammer, been playn for a 2 years]

Scammer: Good we can make that into 1mil

Wow so you coudl just rerun it in 40mins, and yet you waited 1.5 hours for him too leave? Seriously, if would make more sense (and save the others alot of time) if you just mapped out and re-ran. Or if you can jeopardise your morals just finish the run and forget about the 6-8k the guy didn't pay and report him to death.

Of course if you actually attempt to trade with these guys, you'll quickly find that their ectos are frozen.

frozen what? a item who have same look with ectos? i need to know cuz i buy many ectos lol and few times i accepted fast without checking, cuz already lost time calculating the price...

but is hard to run again, after a run im verry tired... and our hope was he ill leave, like many other scammers, they leave fast usually... Im still wonder if he got the quest or no, cuz we done the mission with him disconected.

Saw the GM stuff earlier, and that reminded me of something...

I had a guildie who hadn't played in a long time, a while back, and got scammed out of several ectos. The guy in question was like 12 years old, and not familiar with some GW mechanics, such as the lack of GMs in this game.

One day, as the guild leader and I are doing something in the same party, our guildie starts freaking out in guild chat. He said there was a GM after him and that he was going to get banned. Leader and I automatically go "He's a scammer, just leave him be. There's no GMs in this game, only the devs, and the ones present in the GW community wouldn't do that kinda stuff."

But our guildie freaks out anyways "OMG I don't wanna get banned!! I have to farm ectos for him if I don't want to get banned... I gave him some but he wants more... *guy switches to his W/Rt UW solo*

We get the guy on Vent and explain it to him once again. That calmed him down some, but to prove we're dead serious about our no-GM-like-WoW claims, I ask for the guy's IGN. Rolling my eyes at the IGN (that's so not a dev...) IRL, I PM the guy. He's got somewhat bad grammar and keeps putting emphasis on how he's a GM, that he can ban us right now... Our conversation looked like this:

Me: "So I hear you're a GM and that my guildie's about to get banned. May I ask why?"
Him: "He broke some rules so if he doesn't want to get banned he'll have to farm ectos for me."
Me: "Yeah right. I'm aware of how this "GM" thing works in GW... there are none. Only the devs, and I highly doubt they would sink as low as that to get cash..."
Him: "Well you better believe me, because your guildie's about to get banned, and so will you if you don't stop PMing me. I'm serious, you will get banned. 30 hours. I have the powers to do it."
Me: "Huh-huh. You can't ban me 'cause you're not an ANet employee, I'm not scared of you... Anyone really into this game KNOWS there are not GMs like in WoW. So do me a favor, and leave my pal alone."
Him: "I'm telling you, you'll get banned... you don't know this game..."

I promptly told my guildie to put the guy in his ignore list and to stop giving him ectos, and repeated the thing about the GMs. I never got banned, and neither did my guildie. Must've spent a good hour calming the guy down. He was dead sure he was going to get banned permanently. I was really close to report this guy via the old report system for Anet employee personification...

...*shudder* How can people like your friend... fall for that? If a policeman went to his door and said "Start digging for gold or go to jail!" he wouldn't believe it, would he?

'Cause kids are easily influenced in general. Pretend to be of the authority and they'll either flinch really fast or totally stop caring and tell you to "**** yourself". This one totally bought it, and that's the kinda people these scammers are looking for. Casual players without much knowlegde of the game they're playing.

And I find it low. >_>.

EDIT: Oh and I'll take an example to show you how people abuse authority. Corrupt priests and kids. "Do X to me and you'll be forgiven/won't go to hell/etc" (I leave X to your imagination. I know it's a harsh comparison, but it happens. Authority figure + corruption + fear from your target = not good. Eliminate the fear, the rest falls down...)

Yep, absolutely correct. This is just one of the reasons why the game has "CHILDREN UNDER AGE 13 ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PLAY" on the box. Children are easily scammed and by just popping into town they are going to be exposed to a lot of garbage that their parents probably don't want them to see. (Yeah, I know they are probably exposed to it at school too, but that's a different battle)

Someone mentioned the policeman analogy. Yeah, if a cop came to my door and demanded $100 or I'd go to jail, I'd probably take his badge # and call the local precinct to get some real cops over here. However if a cop came up to a 10 year old boy and said give me all the money you have on you and meet me here tomorrow with $20 or you're going to jail, the kid would probably be scared and do what he was told by the supposed authority figure.

There was a kid in LA the other day spamming something like "help me I can't find this quest". Several people mentioned wiki and several others responded with the typical not-so-nice "quit spamming and figure it out yourself". The kid then said, "please dont be mean. I'm 8 years old and this game is hard". Someone else responded "that just means you have irresponsible parents!" I have to agree with that.

Okay so I'm stupid, I just fell for the "drop item so I can see outside" crap...

Well basically... Person A wanted to see skin outside... Person A said he/she was also looking at a different skin from Person B. Person A asked Person B to drop the other item first, but after pinging bar (I know pinging bar proves nothing as you can always ping a different build other than what's on your bar) but considering Person B was from a top ranked guild (whichever guild has the gold-trim cape right now) I figured it was safe. Anyways Person B drops item... everything was fine. Then I dropped mine and well... yea /gg to me -.- 100kish gone but oh well. My own fault for being stupid.

EDIT: Oh.. are scams reportable or should I not even bother? Just the fact that Person A might've collaborate with Person B sorta... annoys me. The point that someone from a TOP GUILD would do such a thing. I have screen shots if it helps at all. Funny how they're STILL online...

Yes scams are reportable. Someone tried to do a similar scam to me right before GWEN was released. When I reported the person I added him to another storage account. He logged out the same time I received a response from Anet. He didn't log in again for another 3 weeks. This was over a 50k-60k item.

Ah I see, thank you Just sent in a ticket and well I just hope the person gets punished... I don't really care if I get the back 100k(although that's quite a lot of money to ME). But thank you anyways

why would someone need you to drop the item.. even if you dont even know, ask them why they want to see it.. if they say something like "pc on guru" .. well, you can just tell em to screeny an in trade shot.

I had some guy try to sell me a mini pig today insisting that since it is gold it is worth 20K he said he bought it for 10k. A guild member of mine and I deal in minis a lot so I was telling my guildie about this and it turns out he was the one that sold it to him for only 1k.
