I was gonna try out my new Ursan skillz in the lower lvl mission area, while standing in Frost Gate, someone was spamming something that he needed help.
As soon as I entered the party, I got teleported to the mission without asking.
After a while the other guy (with full hench team) loaded and started yelling something like: HLEP ME FINSH THIS MISSION I GIVE YOU 5k.
and I went like: -.-
Ofcourse this was an obvious scam, he would never pay the money at the end for this lousy mission. Plus he appeared to not have been playing that much, so he probably didnt even have the 5k. (I remember it took me ages to get my 2k for my own guild at first)
So we proceeded, ofcourse my noob scammer friend had to go afk during it, due to unknown reasons or his connection sucked bigtime. Anyway, I kinda finished the mission with him always lagging 1 screen behind with the henchies. We mapped to Beacons Perch, he left party and I just saw his avatar running through the portal into Lornar's Pass.
Obviously I pmed him asking where my money was. First it was quiet. So I pmed him again, that I was reporting him. This got him scared, so he promptly responded with a plea for mercy. He didnt have the money as he explained, but he would ask his friends in his guild to lend him some money.
As long as I wouldnt report him...

Well Water when you make any transactions you gotta pay attention. If that's impossible for you then you're better off not helping/trading anyone. Double check 3-5 times to make sure you did everything correct..that's what I do.

I've done my fair share of trading over the years and have seen it all. The switch, the drop that item so I can see it, the can I hold it to see if it looks good on me, the pay you later, the trade it now and I'll trade you back if you get a better offer, the I can dupe for you.., the this (crappy) item is worth so much, and all the other pathetic attempts at scamming. Even still I was half asleep and traded something for gold instead of platinum. But I actually got it back by threatening to report him with the screen shots I took. I said that his account would be banned and he gave it back and begged me not to tell anet. I might still have the screens.
I adid a destroyer weapon run for some dude who offered to pay 100k, and when I went to trade he offered up a lot less than we agreed upon. He reasoned that I would have to take it or get stuck with a something that I didn't want and would be hard to sell. I told him no deal and that I would eventually sell it. He countered cuz he wanted it and I just told him that I would report to anet and contact people in his guild and let them know what a pos he was. He apologized and started making higher offers. Since he didn't have enough money, he sold off some junk and I cut him a break. In the end, I sold it for the amount I would have given it to him if he had just asked initially.
Usually I'll play along with scammers because time is money and I'm waiting to sell stuff in town anyways so they lose time and miss out on potentially scamming someone else the longer I play along. Eventually I let them know or they figure out how lame they are. If they seem half decent or a misled noob, I'll explain how easy it is to legitimately make money. I don't know if it's ever helped, but hopefully one or 2 have seen the light.

Haha, I've gotten the "What's your e-mail and password" "Not telling" "Noob" guy too. :P That's about the only scam I've seen. Even when I was selling a mini oni, people were generally pretty legit about it.

I once overpaid in presear. I put in 2k rather than 200g for a bow. The guy accepted it. Did he scam me? NO I screwed up. I learned a)never trade exhausted and b) check EVERY trade multiple times, even routine ones. Live and learn.

So we went outside and he revived me with [skill]unyielding aura[/skill] and told me to drop it. I just dropped a flute from pre and told him to dupe that first. Funny part was when he tried to convince me that only chaos axes have a special code and can be duped that way ^^. (and he even failed at the aura 2 times)

Though, having tried it myself, I reccomend not to, as you will never be able to trust the other person to actually make the trade in both games after accepting in the other. Unless he is willing to give you the items/gold first, in which case you can have a nice smooth trade.
My situation went down a while back when I pm'ed a person in Droknor's Forge looking to buy old Runescape stuff that I was willing to sell a particularly rare item for the sum of 100k. So, we logged on to both games, and it came down to who had to accept first. He kept bugging me to accept, that I could trust him, while mentioning that he had a very laggy PC. (Convenient, huh? By the way, a lot of people trading will just log out of both games if you trade first.) So, I told him since that was a risk I wasn't willing to take, and I had a reliable system, I told him to trade me first, and he refused. At that point, I told him he could just go attempt to scam someone else, and please waste no more of my time.

The most pathedic scamming attempt I have seen is probably the one where a character takes off their armor and says their friend gave them the account and deleted the armor and that they have no weapons.
The best scamming attempt I have seen is a gold switch from lest say 55k to 55g in under a second. Good thing ANET added the "This trade has been modified" feature.
