Will Guild Wars 2 kill Guild Wars 1?

Its nearly three years old, of course it's on its last legs. If you were a games company, would you squander your finite resources on an ancient engine or create a new one using similar concepts to the original?
Play Oblivion (18 months old now) for a day and then run around Old Ascalon. You're a hero and you can't even run over a small hill between two game areas? Primitive. Anet have done a great job with the new chapters in in terms of map design to disguise these faults, but it can't go on forever.
New challenges requires a new game, simple as that. Or maybe you want more grind to expand the lifespan?
Don't get me wrong, it's still fun. But then so is Pacman.

I switched to the X-Box 360 when I found out my video card won't play battlefield 2, despite meeting all the reqs. GW is pretty much dead for me, but I log in every now and then to chat with friends, maybe do an alliance battle, and check for birthday presents. Sucks too, because I really want a pair of glasses for my toons, but I just can't bear to go out and grind those points, no matter how quick it is.
I'm looking forward to GW2, but I will definitely wait about 2-3 months to see how everyone here likes it before I buy it. Some things about it just make me wretch when I hear them, like the levelling, and the sidekick stuff <---{{{ WTF!?!?! I think GW1 is on life support, but if you are someone who still enjoys it, by all means, have fun man.

Thing is I'm not tired or bored with "Oblivion" or even "Diablo 2", they both offer something to keep playing them for. Character advancement that doesn't stale at level 20. Plus phat loot that is ever changing and improved in statistics or neat special effects they can do. GW has the most stale character progression and loot quality of any game I've ever played. It literally is like a romper room mmorpg. Like for lazy people or kiddies. People that don't want to work for anything and just play repetitive kiddy stuff without any effort.

I wasn't criticising Oblivion, I don't play it any more but I loved it at the time. My point is that the basics of GW are nearly 3 years old and some of the areas are ropey compared to an 18 month old game. That doesn't mean it's bad. I still run a BBC emulator to occasionally play Elite. 23 years old......
Age's post got me thinking about several things; one was modding, which can really expand the lifespan of a game. Some games would have been a lot better if fans had been allowed to mod them (eg Tomb Raider), but Eidos stopping "modability" never hurt those ones commercially. However I'm dubious about in an online game. New maps and quests would be great, but the downside would be that we would all end up with +120hp weapons as quest rewards. So I dunno if it is possible in GW. Anyway, map generation seems to be the toughest issue for fan mods.
The second was Company Hate; everyones seems to hate Beth on their forums, most people seem to hate Anet here, yet we're all playing their games.
The third was now I understand where all those Star Trek mods for fantasy games come from.....

Depends if the titles are worth anything when GW2 comes out and to a larger extent wether the titles if gained after release are worth grinding. It has been suggested that titles are only worth anything at all if gained before release but I think they will rethink that. Imagine protector title gives something worth having in GW2 then after release of GW2 there will be many players jumping back into GW just to complete the title.
Personally once GW2 comes out and assuming no other rpg game grabs me untill then I doubt the original GW will be played anymore. That totally depends on the game mechanics and if ANet want me to go back or just let the servers slowly die.

Of course GW2 will kill GW. That's what always happens with an outright sequel. A few will remain and play GW until it truly ends, but the vast majority will be in GW2. Anet even said recently they dont intend to keep GW servers open indefinitely after GW2's release (this did surprise me actually, as I thought the option to go back for HoM things would always be there).

As for the NCSoft article: too early to make mountains out of molehills. Nowhere does it say they are closing the gaming divisions, just diversification of focus, which yes, will likely mean reducing or closing some gaming projects - but GW seems to me to be one of their top games. That, and they are the publisher. Anet can easily get the franchise published somewhere else if need be.
Without new expansions I don't think GW will live for another two years... It's sad, as I still love playing this game. It may have survived had GWEN brought a little bit more to the table, but 5 days of game play really isn't going to keep me occupied until 2009.
I still love this game and will continue to play it until the day it gets boring. That's not going to be any time soon, and honestly, the best thing about this game is the fact that we can go away, do something else, and come back to play whenever we feel like it. gg Anet.

You guys seem to forget how Old engines seem to work best >.>
That crap runescape is still alive >.>
Flyff is still alive
Shittlestory....oops Maplestory is still alive.
gunz,Wow,Ragnarok,lineage,lineage2,everquest1,ever quest 2,never winter nights,gunbound,R.O.S.E online,Adventure quest,prisontale (kinda),Gunz online,Rappelz etc.
Guild Wars isn't as old as some of those games >.>
GW is dead when they the cost of employees and servers outweighs the gain from people buying it.
or when izzy feels like killing it.

GW1 will "live" as long as someone is playing it.
1 game I slip back to now and then is 6 years old and people still play it, even with the release of a #2 version. There may only be 25 - 30 game windows open, down from over 700, but people are still there with new ones weekly.
I still enjoy GW even after 2+ years, and I will still log on as long as there is a place to log on to.
