Will Guild Wars 2 kill Guild Wars 1?
HardWonFame
Most of the people who don't think Guild Wars is dead are too busy having fun and playing the game to come on this forum and argue with the small contingent that seems to think that games die as soon as they are done with them.

The problem is that GW 2 future looks a bit on the grim side already. EotN was suppose to be the suspenseful and intriguing end to the first GW. However, it did not turn out that way. So I am very suspicious over GW 2 development and it’s hype. There are certain elements that the A-team should have learned from GW 1. Unfortunately, some of those lessons have turned uglier by the end of GW 1 lifespan.
I am trying to keep and open mind for GW 2, but my hopes are not too high for it. Until then, I will still try to continue playing and enjoying GW 1.

MMO's are a hard thing to "kill". There are many older games than GW out there that were released way back when and people still play them. It's hard to tell what really is a realistic life expectansy(how long people will play) for MMO's because they haven't really been around _that_ long. Sure a new release always hooks up a big group of the people and older games and older expansions will often face less population. Luckily GW can be played very self-reliantly so there really isn't a dying need for a lot of other players. Seems to me like GW could actually have a pretty long life.

I dont tend to scream and shout and break door in when Anet nerfs a skill. I usually just keep using the same build or change and I dont give it a second thought.
Skill balancing ingame doesnt stop you from playing and if you dont like the changes, then adapt! Its never had any huge impact on me in all this time. It doesnt seem to impact my heroes and their skills.

I can't see the world of GW1 suddenly getting empty when GW2 is released. It will get more quiet, but not completely empty. The most loyal fans will still keep on playing the game, no matter what happens, and the people who want to build up their Hall of Monuments will still be around, at least for a while.
Darkhell153
well Gw2 will take up a lot of servers...and those things cost a huge amount so I'm sure Gw2 is practically gonna wipe out gw1 within 2 weeks.
Gattocheese
Well i think that GW1 will slowly lose some player base over the next year and a half. Then a month or two before release of GW2 - GW1 will get busy again due to the fact that people will be scrambling trying to get max everything for their HoM. Then the deciding factor if GW1 dies is probaly based on what you get from the HoM. If the HoM delivers quality things then people may just keep GW1 when ever they create a new character for GW2. If the HoM delivers lame things, then nobody will care about keeping around GW1 anymore.
So as of right now, there may be a slipping player base and it will continue. But the only thing that may "officially" kill GW1 off is the crap you get from the HoM.
But you may also take in consideration that GW2 may totally bomb. They may be too late in the year/years to pull people away from other quality MMO's coming out, the game might just end up sucking, or total fanboyism will dominate GW1 leaving GW2 with a weak player base.

HoM will provide you with something like a divine aura, its obvious : ' No affect on the game ' It wont have a affect itll be a lame addition to keep you playing this game.
Darkhell153
I think what'll really kill gw1 is the servers. ArenaNet is likely going to keep gw1 running for a short period after gw2 comes out but they definately do not have enough servers to run gw1 and 2 simultaneously for too long. They'll probably convert all the gw1 servers to gw2 servers within a few months after gw2's release.

Guys,
After the flurry of concern over the article, this has shifted to a sort of "The sky is falling" thread. You should know that Guild Wars is doing very well. The sales for each of the campaigns and for the expansion pack continue at a nice pace. The game is well populated. Guilds continue to thrive. Players continue to make remarkable achievements. Press continues to be very interested in the game, and supportive of the franchise. All really is well. Oh, and the server capacity is just fine for Guild Wars and will be just as fine for Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 -- don't worry about that! Lastly, I just wanted to note that we do continue to support our $100,000 tournament with more prizes for more players than ever before. (And btw, we're buying those prizes -- few are provided for free by sponsors -- so yes, that's a sign of a sustained support and investment from the company on that level as well.) We will continue with that support into the future, assuring meaningful real-world prizes for the exceptional player.
I shouldn't have to say these things, I'm sure you all know everything above already. But every now and then, I guess it doesn't hurt to try to reason with the gloom 'n' doomers, or at least give the majority of folks a reassurance that they probably don't even need.

My prediction is that GW2 will slow down GW1, but probably not until about a year after GW2 is out.
It will be a bit like switching from Civilization x to x+1, or Sims 1 to Sims 2. As people buy GW2, their time will go into that rather than GW1.
But we'll still have plenty of time to play this game.
Nothing seriously new is coming for GW1, that much we know, so it has stalled already, but it isn't dying yet. We all stop growing somewhere around age 30, but that doesn't mean we're dead - unless you look at it from a 16 year old's POV.

I wouldn't say its dead yet, but things are looking rather glum. What are we going to do between now and GW 2? Without another expansion or another free something (not the bmp) most folks are going to lose interest.
It also doesn't help that a lot of things aren't going to be fixed or adjusted in Guild Wars. Gaile made it apparent that it seems like there won't be anymore HoM adjustments. In addition to that, the trade system (party search) is rather crappy. This kind of attitude towards abandonning GW sometimes makes me wonder why I even bother anymore. *sigh*
Just wait until the summer, we'll all be bored as hell with the game. I think we can officially declare it dead by then.

City of Heroes added an auction house in Issue 8 or 9 - almost as far away from release for that game as we are from release of GW now.
On the other hand, with a monthly fee, they might have a larger budget, even with only somewhere around 100k players.

Sales Keep Rising: More excuses to give us 7 heroes so we dont have to PuG
Question: Do you really sit down and play the game to analyze the faults or just plain sail it and pretend everything is perfect.

It isn't like they dont want us to have an improved trade system, its that they cannot physically program it into the current game. This has been common knowledge for almost 2 years, yet people still keep asking why they havent implimented one in this game yet. As far as the HoM goes, they have already adjusted the shit out of it compared to its origional state. The only real thing thats kind of bull about the HoM is the weapons monument will only accept Destroyer weaps. Other than that most people seem to like it.

Alternatively, I'm sure it can't be that impossible to come up with a decent new trade system for the game. They honestly had to expect some kind of lively market in the game. How was the beta? Surely it showed signs of them needing to put some kind of decent trade system in. It just seems sorry for them to say they can't fix it or come up with something besides allowing us to spam trade channel or using a half-assed party search.
Anyway, I've learned to live the disfunctional in-game trade system. GWG Auctions ftw.
As for Hom, I was referring to the Tormented Weapons thing. I agree that HoM is definitely in better shape than it was originally. Anyway, I dont think its too much to ask to have the ability to add an elite weapon to the monument. Destroyer weapons are clearly not at all elite considering how cheap they are to purchase and obtain. It won't be long before every Joe has one or multiple ones.

I really don't get all the sackcloth and ashes, misery and moaning I've read in this thread.
(1) Guild Wars is still fun to play
(2) I am not bored of it -- not by a long shot
(3) I am looking forward to GW2, but I have plenty to do in the meantime
(4) If I do get bored of GW, there are other games out there with which to bide my time
(5) The ArenaNet folks are smart enough to know what works in GW now and what improvements would make the game even better
The one suggestion I read a few posts back that I thought was really worth considering would be for ArenaNet to make some of the high-end content more accessible for solo play. As the GW population continues to thin (and it will, I suppose), this might be a good idea.
If you're not happy in the game, then, seriously, play something else.
Guild Wars is not perfect, but it has come closer by far than any other game to what I want to play. Even if GW2 ends up being more WoW-like (as some fear), I have no doubt it will still be far better than WoW. I am greatly looking forward to GW2 and optimistic about the future of the franchise.

You only answered half the question so I'll ask it in a different way.
Weve established that you play the game but the question is do you and the rest of the team take time to really look at how the games communities are responding to aspects of the game, do you do regular community discussions with people that arent just PvP'rs. An example could be a large group stressing the need to have grind absent from GW:EN but it was done anyway. It really does look like there is no interest taken in any of the actual players who have bought the game, if you prove me wrong which I hope you do then it'll be fine but I cant see anyway you can.

Hop on the bandwagon for ditching GW everyone!
Ill still be playing GW1 by the time 2 comes out, its what got me into the whole series and in ditching it, I would ditch all the good memories I have.

Ironically, it's more likely that Guild Wars 1 will kill Guild Wars 2.

I read the story on the wiki, and I was really disappointed. Everywhere that we came to love and associate with in GW1 was destroyed, and everything we fought for essentially no longer exists. It made me a little trepidant about GW2, but I'm still going to buy it. I'm just going to try to think of it as a brand new game, rather than as a continuum of the GW saga. If I think of it that way,the story might not be so disappointing.

I think actually the sells of the game and its expansion is a little missleading. I agree that maybe even more of the expansion and campaigns are selling well, especially around this time of year, but from what i see is veterans leaving and new players coming. There is also a lot of people that i know and hear from ingame as well as on this forum talking about slowing down on GW or quiting GW for a while. That is to be expected from people who play for thousands of hours, they tend to get bored with the game.
People who have played this game for a while will continue to drop off. Many people on the forums will stop playing as well. But what we will see is a rise on new players and new forum users. But, I think its missleading because i still believe that the number of people leaving or not playing as much is greater than the new people joining in on GW. Also take in consideration of the 4 million copies sold, how many of them are bots, how many people own more than one account, how many people own the 3 campaigns and expansion ?
IMO i think they used GWEN as a marketing tool to bring in other people from other online games, appealing to the nature of a traditional MMO. The majority of players in this year have all turned casual, a new generation of players. 5-10 years ago gamers were generally hardcore in majority. Keeping forum, hardcore, fanboy players happy all the time is not required anymore from any game company. All they have to do is generally appeal their product to the masses and sell.
I have slowed my activity as well from playing everyday for 6-10 hours, to probaly playing 2-3 hours over 2-3 days. GW1 is not dead, just dead to the people who have been here a while. GW2 will not kill GW1 unless the HoM rewards are pathetic, UNLESS GW2 is a total goose egg and fails.
