[Dev Update] Shadow Form Balance Changes - 2 July 2008

The primary goal of this update is to address the high efficiency of Shadow Form farming builds. It had long been possible to maintain Shadow Form permanently, but when the duration of this skill was increased, many new and more powerful build options became viable. We are not opposed to players using Shadow Form for farming, but it is not good for the game economy for high-end farming activities to become too easy or too efficient. The new set of builds enabled by Shadow Form did exactly that.

This update is intended to bring builds based around Shadow Form more in line with other farming builds. In order to accomplish this, we’ve not only altered Shadow Form itself but also made some changes to creatures within the Chaos Plains. At this time, we have not made it more difficult to maintain Shadow Form permanently, because this would be more likely to remove Shadow Form farming as an option for many players. We will, however, continue to monitor the effects of these changes moving forward and will make further changes if necessary.

* Shadow Form Shadow Form: now reduces the damage dealt by the caster by 50% while active.

This is intended to slow down killing while under the effects of Shadow Form. We recognize that this does not affect killing by Health degeneration. That is primarily being addressed through the creature changes listed below.

Underworld

* Added Hex Breaker to Mindblade Specters found in the Underworld.
* Several Banished Dream Riders Chaos Plains region of the Underworld have been replaced with Cursed Dream Riders.
* When Cursed Dream Riders are killed, they cause Mindflay Specters to spawn. Mindflay Specters have Signet of Disenchantment instead of Hex Breaker.

The use of Hex Breaker by Mindblade Specters should require more skillful play by characters who are using Shadow Form in conjunction with hexes. Because Shadow Form does not protect against Signet of Disenchantment, these characters will also want to avoid confrontations with Mindflay Specters. The net effect of these changes should be to decrease the overall killing speed for Shadow Form characters in the Underworld.

Imo ectos wont go up much, people have farmed so much over the past 3-4 weeks...
but you never know
theres always hope!

It's still farmable , with degen and stuff , plus the bot-like farmers will have to watch now. Good update all in all , makes farming chaos plains more a pain in the ass while decreasing the speed and lowering the success chance , nice work A.net.

Finally , my ecto's will be worth something again

As long as I can still kill my raptors, I couldn't care less about Underworld.

I had to go official link to believe my eyes. Better late than never but as others said the damage is already done and people have hoarded stacks of ectos with much less effort than any other farming builds (many of which have been nerfed )
if splinter weapon gets nerfed (instead of damage to all adjacent), this should've got nerfed waaay earlier.

Ectos have been 4.1-3.7k lately.

Oh well, it's just really late. I mean....it's been like 2 months.
Too late to do anything about the ectos now.

XD people complained of nerfing plains or SF...yet they nerfed both O.o maybe A-net only cares about the upper class with their stacks of ectozzz while the guys working on their OB armor are getting shut out again. Honestly...how stupid is A-net if they don't realize that 30sec SF + GoS + deadly paradox=immortality. Why would they nerf it in the first place? Give the noob PVE farmer a chance to make some money and then slam the door in their face?

It seems the new coordinators and wiki-based support system is working...

All is now much tidier and fast, considering the limited resources they have.

Edit: The 50% damage reduc is a bit overkill given the changes in UW, since now it nerfs SF for any area. Oh well, I don't care, I don't farm with my sin.

I am for one very pleased to see this, my Sin has many other uses besides Perma-Form and some of the uses such as running can continue. It will be interesting to see what the effect of this will be on the economy.

Combined with today being more than likely the day where Favor will run out, hats off to Anet.

I cringe at an update motivated purely to silence whining. At least they didn't destroy the skill for other areas or the area for other builds.

And I personally win, because I bet on a nerf and horded ectos. I still don't welcome it though.

LOL at the people rejoicing......... SF is still intact and i can still make my loot and I rarely farmed ectos I have made more than 500k outside of UW, sheeeeesh you people have no clue what can be farmed and how easy you can fill up your inventory, I have one run where I average 18k in 30mins(my best was 35k in 30mins) and if the bosses drop elite tomes that's another 5-10k, I am rejoicing that SF is still intact I don't give a rats ass about Ectos

Just saying. A bit confused here.

Oh well, doesn't bother me too much. I still have other farming spots . Was nice but nothing good (for my ecto count) can last forever x]. Maybe my break will be shorter then I thought.

I believe "Day late and a dollar short" would be the expression.

Everyone already has chaos gloves and FoW armor, which are the only items that require ectos to be consumed. Invariably being the only thing to create a "demand" for ectos. The use of ectos for 100k+ trades does nothing to affect the price as it does nothing to affect the number of ectos in existence.

This is unfortunately anet backpedaling to try and appease the QQ's which will just be QQ'ing tommorrow about something else. At least now I don't have to listen to how assassins are ruining everyone's life.

Rockets are lame. Slice 'n' dice is much better.

Here's the real problem for Anet caused by this - they've shown they can creatively nerf a skill. Now they don't have an excuse for leaving Ursan alone

The primary goal of this update is to appease the whiners that had inventories full of ecto already. And if you didn't notice their the ones that ran out and bought up all the Superior Shadow Arts runes and the UW/FOW scrolls.

I never seen anyone address the overfarming of DOA with Ursan when titan gems dropped from 75k to 4k.

Either you should address the whole problem of overpowered farming builds or you should leave it alone. Personally I could care less because I don't farm DOA or UW/FOW. But I'm sure the masses who were just given the ability to acquire things they couldn't before the Shadow Form buff and spent a lot of gold to do so aren't the ones QQing for the changes you just made.

Nerf more please, please nerf Guild Wars oops you allready did. Lets have this clear. People cried long enough to get a nerf on Shadow Form.

It'll be harder to kill the Raptors aswell, because of the 50% drop in damage.

Think it's about time to /delete my sin, gonna farm non-stop until they put this update into effect.
