I completely agree, since if you're a r5 or lower, it is impossible to get into a good HA group, much the less to win a few matches to get some balth points.

To bad I don't have that much ambition ( or a HA rank ).
holy comma usage batman.

And no...they'll never be my boss. Because they'll never make it in my career field. It takes more than ambition and willpower...

Do you have names of said "great video game players" who get all the respect you say?

Those "dreamers" did more than play video games all day long. They didn't use, they didn't play...they created. These game PLAYERS aren't "creating" anything but more welfare dependencies where my taxes have to pay for their pork 'n' beans.

No, they're really not. Unless you're at the top (Best in the world) at what you do video-games wise, and it's a game that people care about, you're not going to make a career out of it.

So this topic went from HA Rank to GvGers to predicting the life of pro-GvGers? Pretty sure you can't say what they will do in life. What if they are actually smart and in college (look on QQ forums, many "pros" in college). It is your word VS theirs and in the end who cares? As long as YOU are succesfull just worry about yourself.

Compare that to the amount of people getting real jobs. Compare that number to the number of kids who want to be "professional gamers". there's only so many spots for those kinds of people, and it's much lower than the number of realistic professions out there. Those players are all solo as well.

And when someone is more famous for their screen name than their real name...that's not really fame. That's more like impressing a child...who are already easily impressed. If you want to be famous for a competitive skill, play baseball, basketball, football. Hell, play ping pong.

I guess there are a lot of people wanting to be professional footballers as well. Compare that with the number of people getting real jobs...

Regardless of whether YOU think that it's 'not really fame', people are devoting their time to imroving themselves at a particular skill, and are getting rewards and public exposure. All footballers do is 'kick a ball about'. All sprinters do is 'run very fast'. If you put it that way, nothing sounds like an achievement.

Reality check! Famous soccer players like Ronaldihno etc play at the best European clubs that have complete arenas filled with thousands of people who pay tickets to see the weekly matches. TV networks and big bucks are involved (not a game channel like in Korea). The world championship is showed on TV in countless countries around the world. The whole world knows players like Maradona, Beckham etc. Who knows the top pvp players? Only a small group of insiders.

If you wanne make fame and get a living out of playing GW, you choose the wrong game. Anet is backing out the whole pvp thing since Leipzig.

Sure those players achieved something, they're the best at what they do, but you can't make a decent and steady income out of it like a real job or a career in soccer or another top sport.

If you link that with rank discrimination, pvp is choking itself, there's no future in it. Not enough new blood. Talent doesn't get a chance.

If you wanne make it in the gaming industry, you're better of being a real good developer or designer. Look at Arenanet and especially Blizzard.

Getting a good real-life job has nothing to do with how well you are at computergames. It's more about intellegence and social communication.

I know people that played 6000+ hours in Guild Wars and finished their University meanwhile earning the title "Master of Sience". I played quite an amount myself and finished my study and are a High-School teacher in History.

Allmost all of my friends never played videogames and all work in a large warehouses working their ass off.

I could go on giving more examples but I think my point is clear allready.

Lim Yo Hwan.

But hey, lets throw in a few more figures, shall we?

Lee Yoon Yeol is currently on a US$830,000 3-year contract (expires 2010, his previous contract was US$600,000 over the same period). A few others, in no particular order:

(Name - contract value in USD - duration of contract)

There are numerous players, of which I can name several, that have newly signed contracts in the range of the above.

StarCraft players are all known by their real names; some of these are household names. Screen names are only really used by foreign community members for ease of identification.

There are twelve professional SC teams (which included dedicated 2v2 players) in Korea, and some funded other ones in other countries.

Among teams, the managers/coaching staff of some are slowly being replaced by the retired professional players.

http://www.epltalk.com/top-money-earners/1843 (NBA, baseball and motor sport are in there too btw)

I've read an article somewhere about the earnings of good programmers and developers and I remember some easely made 7500 euro a month. That's 90 000 euro a year.
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_much_m...rogrammer_earn

from wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_programmer

'Results of a 2007 survey indicate that the average salary for a game programmer is USD$83,383 annually. The least experienced programmers (with less than 3 years experience) generally earn about $57,665, while developers with over six years experience on average earn $94,525.[1]

Generally, lead programmers are the most well compensated, though some 3D graphics programmers may challenge or surpass their salaries. According to the same survey above, lead programmers on average earn $103,409 annually'

Will a pro gamer still be a pro at the age of 30-40? A good dev will have increased his earnings through his years of experience at that age.

I hate to break your bubbles guys, but you should know the pvp adventure in this game doesn't really have a future and you can't make a living out of it. Rank discrimination fits somewhere in the whole picture like I posted earlier on this page.

It's kind of funny how every rank discrimination thread follows the exact same pattern:

Stage 1: Indignation

I want to join high rank groups and they won't let me in!

Sorry, you are not good enough.

But I'm just as good as them!

Stage 2: Realization

No, actually, you aren't. They took it seriously, they practiced, they are good. You did not, therefore, you are not. Don't take it personally.

Stage 3: Ego Massage

Yeah, well they're all a bunch of no-life losers that will never make as much money me.

And your point is?

I don't know if your post was directed at me but my point is they can do with their life whatever they want. I have already enough with mine. I hope though they don't take this game too seriously and at the same time waste opportunities. That's all.

Obviously in this game, since the possibility of the game lasting very much longer is nil. With increasing interest in e-sports, it would be possible if the game became big enough.

The success of esports in some areas is proof enough at the fact it is sustainable. Once the industry reaches a certain mass, a lot of other avenues open up, which need experienced players: commentators, managers, coaches if it gets that major, and so on.

The fact that this has not been developed is another issue altogether.

I do not believe in the slightest that rank discrimination is the major factor to limiting new players from joining PvP. It contributes, sure, but there are much greater issues like uax, a gigantic learning curve, and the team-play format which makes it difficult to simply play the game.

You think like that right now. Once you reached it you get a fase where you think: "Dammit, r10 is so much more. I won't go for that". What happens next: You have fun playing HA with your friends and become more and more succesful because you play with the same guys all the time. Then r10 becomes within grasp... you go for it and the process starts all over again when you reached r10 and think about r11.

Oh well, I'll get us back on topic.

Yeah, Rank matters to me.

That glowing animal looks pretty sweet. Despite the fact that it's not really indicative of skill anymore, it is indicative of experience and someone with a tiger or wolf jumping out of their chest will ALWAYS be better than some FOB pve'er displaying his Champion of the Luxons title. I can't stress this enough.

Once every 8 months you will find some kid who RA'd his r1 glad title and actually understands PvP basics but your average person stating that "I'm just as good, I haven't gotten the chance" is not good, nor do they deserve the chance.

They should work for it like thousands of other players had previously, seeing as this game's been out for 3 years and unless you just got an acct today there's no reason you shouldn't have a glowing animal shooting out of your chest on command if you want one.

Most people that could have a /rank emote would have one if they could, but most don't have the patience and aren't willing to expend the effort to get one. Ultimately, this leads to them saying that good pvp players have no life. If you saw what some of these PvPers look like, I'd say they have better lives than you.

In other words, no u.

Yes I agree. Rank discrmination is only a part of the problem, certainy not the major obstacle, but it's the first one I encountered coming from PvE and wanting to play HA. But I understand that, people wanne play and win. I'm halfway to the measely rank 3 now. Lost a lot but if those infuses come out and weapon swaps, good decisions etc., then I'm happy. As long as I see progression it's ok.

I also agree that the learning curve is indeed pretty gigantic. But what do you do when you're low rank? Join or form a low rank team, get a beating more often than not. I'm not complaining, that's just the way things are atm. Get lucky once in a while joining a r4 group, get a win in UW here and there. Maybe the best option is to join an active and experienced PvP guild that wanne take you under their wings.

I got pretty lucky with this. Though really, you don't even need an experienced guild - even a mid-tier guild will be able to raise a new PvP player's skill and awareness a great deal, and help start develop contacts.

It is impossible to overemphasize how important contacts are in getting groups and experience.

Good point.

If some unranked players talk the same way ingame like they do here on ranked players then I'm not suprised that they are kicked from groups.

It all starts with listening.

Either you start your unranked groups or you show a bit respect for those higher ranked that want to take you along and you do exactly like they say. Why would you join them in the first place when you think they are bad. Just let them feel like you give effort.

Because I absolutely abhor HA. I'm almost r4, yet I probably have won Halls more times than the average person who sway'd or ran some other stupid gimmick build to r9. Half of the players I know that are ~r5/r6 and have much more PvP knowledge than any r12+ I've ever met.

Point is, some people don't want to deal with how terribly stupid HA is.

some more weird stuffs I encounter and saw in HA lol needless to open a new thread, i thought i post it here.

Joined a random group, and the leader say to bring any build, so i load one of our guild hammer warrior build, this build you need a team to work, but its has all the attribute in the correct places and I was gonna tweak it from there, then this other players joins, and demand that I ping my build, i told them one sec, but they insist, so, whatever, I ping the half build-build. lol MAN YOUR BUILD SUCK 3 letter A word here.... What the hell, i told you I was not ready but you wanted to see.

then later on, still recruiting, suddenly theres this all caps thing pop up onto the screen, some smart ass players wanting unranked lackey to lick their shoes??? what's up with that?

the first one, i don't know if they are ranked, the second one is. so you know, you get all kind, lolol, i am from now on just gonna laugh at all this stupid thing and play more game.

Strong disagree. I've seen a rank 7 player run clear across the map in PvE, get killed, then wonder why he died. It took him about 5 miniutes for him to realize his entire team was about 8 compass lengths away doing the mission bonus. He proceded to curse us out and spam his emote at us the entire time.

There are LOTS of people who are morons who e-bayed/greifed their way to rank6+, just as there are LOTS of people who e-bayed/greifed their way to get PvE titles.
No title (except champion) really means anything.

Yes, Rank matter to me. People say you should play game for fun, but other than fun, people play game to achieve/win something also (it's also more fun when you win anyway :P), it's good to have a goal. Rank is something that measure your achievement, how you achieved those rank is another story.

I'm impressed when I see someone with high PvP rank, 8+ Glad (highest is 10 atm), 6+ Champ (highest is 7 or is it 8 atm? idk), and 12+ hero. Of course they could've just ebay it and be totally clueless, but I don't judge anyone until I see them play or play with them.

I do help newer player when I can, but since we're talking about rank meaning, if I pug and have a choice between unrank/low rank vs a high rank player, I'd pick the higher rank player and take a chance that they're are actually good, if not oh well, can always kick afterward.

I was talking about HA, Hawk.

Someone who actually played to get their rank will be better than a non-ranked player with little/no experience.

I judge player skill by talking extensively to people about the game, builds, mechanics, etc.
