If they weren't in alpha stage, they wouldn't be doing what they're doing now - starting to build hype for the game. I'd say they're entering the pre-beta stages and are close to a more fully functional beta than a lot of us may suspect. Remember what Anet said awhile back, with them not wanting to show off anything until it was close to being finished. Not to mention, as said earlier, they've been playing the game every Wednesday. *That* was their alpha testing.
I may just be getting my own hopes up, but I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a beta at the end of this year, or possibly the beginning of next year. A 2010 release doesn't seem so unlikely anymore.

What a CG ad means is that Arenanet will have marketed their game, and will as such get a larger audience, and if the game does good, they don't have to close it down. Hype is nessesary.

But for those of us who are ALREADY fans, a CG ad is worthless, because we're interested in what the game looks like, not what a pretty video they put together to promote it dies.

Not entirely useless, at least you may get to take a look at the overall Design of some of the dragons we haven't seen yet and maybe some professions. (Though looking at Devona dual wielding in the first Trailer, that might be a bit much.)
And of cause it will be another sign that the PR machiene has startet, meaning from then on, next time they want to show video material its gonna be ingame material.
Edit: And not every game nowadays starts of with a CG, wasn't the first Star Craft 2 preview mainly made up of ingame material? What I am especially interested in is if and how much ingame sequences have improved. (And they have with every new Chapter until now)

The engine exists, and is very well designed, and beautifully optimized. I have yet to see game content obviously, but the engine is wonderful. Let us hope they make excellent use of it.

Not....quite... the engine is optimized, no doubts there... but............
You can expect higher requirements than a 7000 series for anything near low-medium settings.

Well, I'd like to say I'm excited, but can't really get that worked up just for a logo.
Maybe after they actually put up a trailer or gameplay vids (or even screenshots). Still, glad they're announcing something, so its not just vapourware.

I imagine it'll have low requirements for the terrible-graphics mode. Interesting to see how it will scale upwards though, for the best graphics...

I want to be a Grey Warden! I'll be getting for the 360. Gaming is going to be pretty awesome as far as rpg and shooters go. Borderlands, Dragon Age:Origins, Left 4 Dead 2, Darksiders,Castlevania and Mass Effect 2. Then hopefully when I done playing those I'll be even more pumped for Guild Wars 2.
