Why is it I'm the only one who likes the idea of a quest with build-up and no instant gratification?
That is, of course, assuming that we can do this in more than a limited time frame once it's active.

i hope the boss is a giant level: 38 with 3000 hp and infinite energy.. that way it will be almost impossible to solo and you will need to form a party of 12 which has never been in the game and would be very cool...
Lishy
You're not the only one. I like the suspense too.
I think Arenanet is virally marketing this update.
Also:
"Love me or hate me, just make sure you spell my name correctly"
You guys keep talking about the quest non-stop. I think Anet achieved their goal

Unless CR has a good explanation on why the Steward has yet again left, this is really going to look bad for Anet.
So, Regina.......what's going on now?

Looking rather good Anet, let the lovely backlash now begin from the GW community will now be rather annoyed with you lot

WAIT A FREAKING MINUTE
So we had to take the quest, while it was active, for the couple days the Steward was there, and then the quest could only be completed at some later date? ARE YOU FREAKING INSANE ANET? So if we didn't take it, knowing that it was only a 'wait until who knows when it'll be active', we won't be able to actually do it whenever that time is? Is this crazy world now?

I would have played it safe and taken the quest on all of my characters right away. Even if there wasn't any way to actually complete the quest, it still wouldn't have hurt to take the quest. Plus, she said he wouldn't be there for long.

so.......where was this stated? I didn't see this.

Plus, I'm rather enjoying the QQage.
Patience is a virtue, but it doesn't seem like people understand that anymore. Waiting, speculating and wanting are definitely part of the fun.

Wow. Just wow.
I'm having a hard time trying to come up with words to express my disbelief here. I've witnessed some pretty stupid ass things in my lifetime, things that are beyond comprehension, and it never ceases to amaze me how a seemingly not-complex evolution becomes this abortionized mess, complete with football bats and flipper-armed flailing about and otherwise full speed ahead RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOery.
For a "one time only" holiday quest to get delayed is one thing. To have the npc quest giver come and go and come and go and come and go is another. To have a warning on some wiki journal that only a smattering of people pay any attention to is another issue. The fact that the warning was some sort of incredulous quasi info stating "oh yeah, btw, yeahhh, that quest you were trying to knock out, yeahhh, that quest will available some time in the future (like the xth return) so... go ahead and take that quest now because, like, um, yeahhh, that npc has to go away and you won't be able to take the quest later... yeahhh". Because that makes complete sense, taking a quest days in advance because the npc is going to be removed from the game, for a (delayed) one-time quest that allegedly will become active some day, eventually...

I think the waiting game is really to see what uwsc builds come out to counter the skeletons. From there they can finalize the skill set on the end boss to counter the builds that are already being posted and promising to take uwsc back to under 20 minutes. Kind of sneaky if that were the case. Either that or swine flu ravaged them again, or it is just /fail. I dunno.
Tom Swift
although I did take the quest on all eligible characters, this way of doing things has me totally confused.
They put an npc in to give a quest you could not do yet
then they have us load a new build just to take him out before the quest was ready even though, essentially, his presence made no difference to the game anyway - and this build could not wait till the next regular update, why?
I'm soooo confused

Well if it makes you feel any better, this is what I think will happen:
Dhumm battle will be a permanent, repeatable addition to UW.
The halloween quest is a one-shot bonus reward for doing this battle.
So, everyone should still be able to do the quest "content", albeit only a few will get "rich."

Good point. I like it. I agree it'd be kind of sneaky, but with this sort of stuff I guess you can't just say, "We're going to put in a new enemy and it's going to have X, Y and Z skills." People will be countering that before the enemy even exists.
Hmm. Food for thought. If that's the case, then this quest literally is a waiting game for them.

That would be fully excellent. If that wasn't the plan from the start, they should MAKE it their plan now!

While I am surprised the Steward disappeared already - and thankful my brother badgered me into taking it on my alts - I'm actually heartened that he & his quest turned out to be just a brief side-dish to the upcoming main event for one big reason: the reward.
I mean the Steward quest reward is generous with the cash and also ToT bags for the candy title chasers (given up at 1k myself but pass them all to my bro), but I was worried that was it for the finale.
Since he's gone now with barely a fanfare and the finale is still outstanding, it's clear that the Steward's quest is a] not essential to the showdown with Dhuum and thus b] the fixed/random/whatever reward for stomping Dhuum is not just going to be a sack of candy.
P.S. This is bugging me now: anyone know for sure if Dhuum is pronounced as "dumb", "doom" or something else altogether?

I call Dhuum "Doom", since he could only be called dumb as a cruel joke by Anet.

I'm confused as to the reasons why anyone would NOT take the quest on all the available chars as soon as it was available? Was it because they thought: "well, I will just abandon it and take it when I can actually do something, because I don't like clutter in my Quest Log."

Since I didn't bother to do the running quests with my alts, it never occured to me at least that they'd all be eligible for the 5k 100 bag conclusion.

Not everyone in the game is a forum/wiki dweller...
LOL Anet. Removed the NPC that gives a quest that's not even available yet. Are you out of your mind?
If they wanted to let us know about this guy going away, why not post it in the login messages?
Now we have "the waiting game" of getting a message from Regina about this mess.

The quest is called "The Waiting Game". Big clue there. And then the Voice of Grenth tells you to "stand ready", and "We will summon you when the time comes".
I really have no sympathy for people who couldn't figure out that the Steward could very likely leave before the quest became "do-able". What do they want? Someone to hold their hand through everything? Have precise login messages instructing them to "do this, do that", so they can disengage brain and still have everything handed to them on a plate?

Everyone who was aware of Halloween (and Halloween was announced in the login messages), should have been able to stumble across the Mad King's Steward, with the big exclamation mark over his head. And take quests accordingly. And figure the whole thing out. And even if you couldn't, asking in public chat would have got your answer in seconds.
Reformed
I was thinking the same thing. They claim to keep stats on all sorts of things, maybe the volume of people taking the quest had trailed off to the point where it was ok to remove. Pretty strange situation with this one all around I gotta say.
Cracko
Great, I've only gotten it on one character.
ANET IS RED ENGINE GO STUPID, SRSLY.
what the hell are they thinking?
oh yeah: great communication again ANET, you rock!

Well the steward had to leave eventually, maybe the whole point of the waiiting game was to make sure those who actaully attended halloween actually picked it up.
to be fair they did say the Steward would shortly be leaving

lore reasons? oh please.
where did it say he would be leaving "shortly"?
and what does "shortly" mean anyway, 1 day, 5 days, a month?
