This is another test how much people are willing to pay for looks. They already tested how much we are willing to pay for storage and for changes to our character model.
What will they test next?
The result will influence how much and what we get for free and how much "stuff" will cost in Guild Wars 2.
Upon release of GW, they would not have dared that, not even have thought about that. But it seems that also the success of DDO's new "free 2 play" business model with item store seems to inspire ArenaNet to do the same.
Apparently this system is no longer that much associated with crappy asian grinders as it once was.
While I do not condemn item store systems, I regret the development nevertheless.

Just brought it, awesome costume. $10 bucks is pocket change to me, at least it goes and support anet.

Unlike the makeover kit it is unlimited use, therefore I will be purchasing the Wintersday set.

I've always found this to be absolutely ridiculous. If Anet was offering something that actually had some awesome stats to it instead of just dolling up our characters, I might consider it.
As it is, though, every armor in the game is exactly the same. The only difference is appearance. Give us some new gear. These micro transactions are just absolutely retarded.

okay in gtob saw female dwayna and male grenth and meh. they aren't worth 10 bucks.

I bought it as well. Its Killer. And even at 10 bucks...its still cheaper than paying monthly for WoW or its ilk. If you dont want the items offered for cash, then dont pay for them. Some will and to them its pocket change. As stated here...at least it helps support Anet...you know...that NO MONTHLY FEE game you have enjoyed for almost 5 years now.
Eragon Zarroc
is the dwayna one different colors for different proffesions? lol at more income for them ;-)
Symeon
A clever way to make money. Well done ArenaNet. Now can you actually fix the game please?
own age myname
And, this is exactly wanted Anet wanted. People are buying into it "Oh, it's only 10$" which adds up really fast. Suckers ^^

this frightens me..
if they wanna turn guild wars into one of those money sink free to play games with a bazillion real money extras then fine.
i just hope gw2 wont be like this

In before ArenaNet offers different name fonts and colours in the ingame store.
And a new title track based on money spent. One which has one of those obnoxious animations.

They pushing as a test as someone said earlier, they would've never tried this when the game was more active.

Then we had the extreme success of ingame features like "glowing hands" for the Collector's Editions.
"Woot! People pay money for that! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$"
Seems westerners are not above paying extra for glowy crap!
Then they added char slots. Then model makeovers. Now costumes. In Oblivion they even sold horse blankets, so well, they will sell more and more and more.
Microtransactions are the new buzzword and model for a lot of upcoming games. We will have to deal with it.
What irks me so much about the system is that it usually works like this:
Extra Storage
Costume
new area, app 1-3 hours gameplay, buggy (<- Fallout 3 "Downloadable Content comes to mind)
This fancy thing
That fancy crap
Server transfer
Gender change, etc. etc. etc.
I bought all Fallout 3 DLCs - and while I really liked two of the DLCs, even those were in general not worth the money.
-> A lot of money for a minimum of content/stuff.
I have not played Dragon Age yet, but I fear it follows the same principle: Great game, but every minor extra or expansion costs comparatively so incredibly much more.
Another motto that I always appreciated for computer gaming is "keep money out of the game." Once they add microtransactions like this, it will inevitably also have impact on the way they design stuff - around those micro transactions.
I am scared for GW2, but still hope for the best.

Why are people thinking that asking us for an *optional* purchase with absolutely no impact on the game is a stupid idea? Do they not understand the basics of business? Anet isn't some charity running this game out of the goodness of their hearts. They need to make money, plain and simple.

I saw alot of free mmorpg doing custome pack crap but never expected GW to go down that road. Guess this is what we can expect for 2010.

There are currently only 2 costumes available, and they cost pennies to produce, and by there very nature are made to look good.
I'm thinking these skins will end up horribly saturated and overused. I remember an ANet from a few years ago that made Blindfolds undyeable and Shiro's Daggers have prohibitive requirements to keep players from overusing them. WTF happened to you, ANet? At least those items still had to be farmed and worked for.

They should make money by selling more copies of their game.
Oh wait, they can't, because people aren't interested in buying a game whose own developers pretty much abandoned it, as did the majority of the community. Whose fault is that? Yes, it's ArenaNet's fault, their decision to work on GW2 instead of releasing GW: Utopia and doing regular skill balances.
A game like GW relies on sales, which relies on keeping it appealing to the average gamer, and one of the requirements for that in a multiplayer game is that there is an active community and the gamer can easily see that. Since ArenaNet lacks the competence to maintain a community and keep their game selling, they've decided to imitate korean "game" developers and go with microtransactions.

+10$ for ANet from me.

Costumes sound like a great idea. I might have to pick these two up.
And to all you people who are upset about the micro-transactions, I understand your concerns, but remember that Anet is a company with expenses, workers they have to pay, and a big new game in the works. They need cash to operate. I'm not sure if we should be faulting them for trying to sell us stuff, especially when they're just cosmetic items like these. I don't want Guild Wars to go down a F2P route either, but I don't see any problem here.

I have mixed reviews about this...
I am very surprised and pleased to have a costume to go over armor and be a little flashier. That was a nice surprise for sure! Grenth looks really nice; Dwayna girl is ok, Dwayna guy, so-so.
However... I am a little shocked that ANET has now officially gone down the road of Micro Purchasing. They have hinted this with the storage packs, and make over packs. But I did not think they would go the full little costume and toys pay-for-it route. I realize that in this day and age, and a time where GW2 is not going to be released until at least 2011 (the next big dollar income for them), they need something to fill the space and pay the personal. Granted, I would have preferred a 1/2 again addition of something similar to EotN (like the North West Giant's Basin area where that delta is, or a new elite area like Merlandru); but $10 for 2 pieces of clothing that do nothing but look different? Maybe $5 for the PAIR, but not $7 apiece! Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the silent effort put into this, and it’s a pleasant surprise. But give something a little more worth buying then 2 pieces of clothing. I know, personally, that if it was a full Norn Wolf Form costume... I AM THERE! I WANT! So my tune would change, I'll be truthful. But until that day comes (unlikely), I am going to have to say pass on these. Yes they are cool, but not $10 cool. I need a little bit more bang for my bucks please.

People Want My Money(2) Same as above, plus a pile of gold coins and bags of gold appear at player's feet.
I'm Very Rich(3) Same as above, plus a gold and jewel-encrusted treasure chest appears and bursts open, spewing forth gold and jewels.
I Have More Money Than You(4) All of the above, and the player turns into a pure gold statue. Three treasure chests instead of one appear.
My Guild Hall Smells Of Gold And Jewels(5) All of the above, and a "celestial" golden palace sparkles into existence behind the character.
Billionaire Walking Amongst Mere Paupers(6) All of the above, and a giant bag of gold drops from the sky, shaking the ground and knocking down all characters in the instance who have not achieved the title.
The costumes look neat. I don't really trust the NCSoft site.

you all tend to forget....Anet isnt in control anymore. they were bought out by NCSoft. These money ideas and wing emotes to promote another game came out after the merger. They are in the business to make money. Period. They could all tell us to go to hell and start charging 20 dollars a month to play like other MMOs. So shut up and deal with it. Dont buy the offered items if you dont want to. Wont stop you from playing your game. But in the long run, a few instore items will still be less a year than a monthly fee. And thats only if you care enough to spend the money on them.

Most of the skill updates and balances likely drove away the majority of players as it's not like there's much for GW to offer anymore. Build a new character for the current meta and continue to play the same areas over and over after my main was nerfed or move on to a different game? Simple choice, really.
