Oh wait, they can't, because people aren't interested in buying a game whose own developers pretty much abandoned it, as did the majority of the community. Whose fault is that? Yes, it's ArenaNet's fault, their decision to work on GW2 instead of releasing GW: Utopia and doing regular skill balances.

A game like GW relies on sales, which relies on keeping it appealing to the average gamer, and one of the requirements for that in a multiplayer game is that there is an active community and the gamer can easily see that. Since ArenaNet lacks the competence to maintain a community and keep their game selling, they've decided to imitate korean "game" developers and go with microtransactions.
I don't know if Anet could really have kept working on Guild Wars 1 forever though. I mean, I'm sure Utopia would have been neat and perhaps the next installment after that would have been cool too...but eventually they would have to move on. I'm sure they wanted to take advantage of changing technology and act on the lessons they learned from Guild Wars 1. The only real way to do those two things is to make a sequel...a process that necessarily takes a lot of time, effort, and money. Hence fewer bits of new content and less regular updates for this game. And as for the money issue...the costume idea is a good way to help out with that.

Uh, sorry money is tight and I'm slightly insulted Anet thinks I am stupid enough to pay $6-10 for an ingame "costume" in a dying game. Give me the damn skill update, stop putting out flashy updates and give us CONTENT.

I paid for the BMP gladly, but I will certainly not pay for this.

On the fact that it seems like we can now wear festival hats without compromising armor...too little WAY too late.

That Grenth/weaponset/ele looks freaking sweet, Motoko.

Probably not going to buy it, but still.

people are so dumb to think this is replaces a skill update.

How long does it take to quickly skin up 2 not very interesting armors and adding them to the in game store?

How long does it take to completely rework skills, test them, test buggs, test new enemies with new skills, test for new unbalances, test for QQ support?

We know that they decided to go down the road of GW2 because of the problems 10+ professions and thousands of skills would cause, not because of something income related. I wouldn't say they are at fault per se since this was a long term plan to keep the franchise alive, so its not like they had much choice in ending up where they are now. although this costume thing is in fact an attempt to get things lively again, i agree that they should be focusing on proper content updates.

Besides, every time they added a new purchase option they included stuff that's free as well. We got a free storage panel last time, and this time we get to use our old hats without sacrificing armor.

If we were to buy these costumes through the NCSoft Store, wouldn't we get instantly hacked? Not sure about the in-game store though. Is it more secure? I wouldn't mind supporting Anet with a few bucks...

Now this is retarded. Companies make money by making things people want to spend money on. A piece of content you're not interested in, or you seem to find unorthodox, is still a perfectly legitimate way to make money.

"Cost pennies to produce"? No... We had several artists working long hours to create and implement these costumes, not to mention the other team members who were involved in making this happen. We actually do pay our staff.

If you want to start Guild Wars be prepared to to shell out at least $50, for a 4 year old game. If you want to just PvP you can just spend $20 and grind for weeks, or pay $80 right off the bat, for a 4 year old game.

Alternatively you could play TF2, while only 3 years old, is still supported. All of the cosmetic items (aside from one small hat) are free. Has no required expansion (or any expansion at all). Just had a huge update with tons of entertaining stories attached. Its only $20, on sale for $10 this weekend, occasionally goes on super sale for $2.50, and even then its completely free this weekend! I'm only here because I'm waiting for the update to go live.

Support + Marketing = success in business.

Costumes can be dyed, including the hair that comes with the Dwayna costume.

This. Basic marketing people, really. You want a dedicated Live Team to keep the game running and fix the things you really want fixed? Then they'll need an income stream.

It boggles my mind that some people expect a game to made on fresh air alone.

Did someone buy the game for you because i payed money for my games... its only $10 ok...

Buy purchasing this content for only $10 the playerbase is essentially telling anet:

they can freely attach a fee to any kind of update regardless of how small it is... £5.99 for two costumes?! I bought eotn on release day for £14.99 figure that out...

Anet seems to have a legion of fanboys that misinform others that this game has no fee's what so ever regardless if its optional of not.

too late, too much $, with the added bonus of getting your account blocked because of how they handle their in-game store purchases, plus whatever hidden bonus of having your account hacked due to some security flaw

PASS

edit: +1 to this would have been time better spent fixing XTH, and the creep towards microtransactions is always a turn-off

how about that having been the reward to some new quarterly content update, you know, that other promise that was broken?

It'd be nice if you'd pay them to update the skills....

(not the artists obviously, but I guess they have to have something to do too...)

Play nice, let's contribute to the thread all right? If you don't like it, that's fine tell us why. If you like it, that's fine, tell us why. Let's get some feedback in here instead of clever and witty one-liners. Staying on topic would also be a nice bonus as well.
