Metal sucks imo
Hard to get a good high contrast and colors. I think this artist got them pretty nice, one of the best armors I've seen
: link and link. I think the lighting is more crucial then the texture, although I like using such textures a lot. One mistake I think I make too often though, is that I use a bit distorted brushed for metal (which I think you did in the Noble Berserker too) instead of applying a texture only, and perhabs some small roughness yourself. But the distorted brushes oftenly make it look like someone took some sandpaper over the armor, rather then making it shiny with small bumps in it. Armor = tough time

lol okay! I am glad that I am not setting myself up for being banned. It's the same way about the other threads, I am interested in looking at all types of Art from you guys, not just GW!
@Charlie - I actually realized how similar her pose is to Pery's assassin after I already am almost done rendering. >_<
And thanks for the tips on textures. I'll try those. I just haven't been really confident about it because I generally don't like to rely heavily on pre-made brushes that they become a crutch to me (unless I made them myself so I know the process).
I created a couple of brushes for painting and texturing but yeah I need more variety on this. I probably should devote some time creating my own brushes so next time I sit on a drawing I will have these at my disposal. One of my books have this and I just need to read/follow them through.
@Tommy - Those are really good example. i am always envious of how some artists get such nice effects with minimal effort/brush strokes
Yeah I just used my generic textured brush on the Noble Berserker armor. Like I said in my reply to Charliepai, I only just use two atm lol. I got a brush for smudging which is basically a hair brush that I don't use for hair at all ..because I feel guilty for the shortcut ..despite the fact that artists say they are free to use. But yeah it's another story if I created them myself. I just want to know/understand the process (since I am really a novice at drawing and need to learn the basics first) and I seriously need to dedicate some time in doing these things
Not saying that it's bad to use pre-made brushes but I just want to be able to understand the underlying concepts to these which I haven't really looked into yet. I've skimmed through a few tutorials but it was more speed reading than anything. =P
Anyhow, here's Nian's art trade. Background is a stock that's free to use. I might polish it further but I probably need to work on the landscape thingy >_<

Thanks Eastern!
I fixed a lot of stuff in that Neesa drawing.
http://roguemina.deviantart.com/art/...rade-199101894
And I tried speed sketch last night with Tommy's brush (1 hr). I wish I didn't smudge at the end. Next guinea pig would be *looks at her fanart requests link* Sheik from Zelda
And I plan to use pose reference next time. Just drew this pose from memory in my workshop

thought I'd make an update. Got an urge to draw Mina again. I thought about painting the background as my entry to the landscape contest..but we'll see.

(Initial) finished version and my new avatar. Planning to do more of it (e.g. by smoothing it out, fixes and/or adding background and stuff).
I got to play with new brush settings I found on a tutorial and I love it! Actually the reason I did my own character because I usually use them as guinea pigs for new things I try.

Looks good Raven. I think she could use a bit more color in her skin though, specially with the very red lips. Perhabs some reds and pink/purples here and there will bring her alive a lot more. Also something I noticed when people are painting latex (which I think the boots are?) is that they use a lot higher contrast (some even at a point of black with one white line on it). Maybe something to try out when you draw Mina again? :3
Eastern Magik
i like how you always give her some unique look, her eyes are just captivating, and she looks beautiful ^^ And you should definitely paint background

Ravenhawk
*hugs* Thanks you two

I usually add more stuff than that such as ambient lighting, more shadows/highlights, blush, etc which I think what you saw is missing. Good eye there! And yep, I do plan to add those.

Thanks. I guess it just comes with RPing this character for about five years, I got a good grasp of her personality already and a general look in my mind. One thing I try to achieve is I want to at least give the viewer an idea of the character just by looking at them. I may or may not able to achieve that all the time, but the more I know the character the best chance that their personality will shine through in my interpretation of them.^^
Perynne
Wow, Mina looks beautiful (and scary!) in that drawing. Good job! The dress reminds me a bit of that chick from Resident Evil 4.
![]() I love how flowy the hair looks. The only thing I'd suggest is adding more random strands of hair flowing out, just individual strands that flow apart from the main hair. Her face does look very vampirishly pale and I like the overall lighting you've chosen. Tommy's had a good point about the boots. They also look a little unfinished compared to the rest of her, but I think that also serves to draw attention to her face more. ![]() Ravenhawk
I know who you're talking about, Ada Wong, right? lol Yeah I just noticed that now.
Here's the finished version, thanks for all the comments! I've taken them into account while working on the finished version ![]() http://roguemina.deviantart.com/art/...tine-200204560 Tommy's

having a mild art block recently..so just did some FFVIII doodle and an unfinished art of my Night Elf in WoW (that I don't plan to finish).
as for what's next. Like Thistle, I am doing some work on my comic and I just remembered the poker drawing that I was working on lol. So I'll continue that while I wait for Murke to tell me what she wants me to draw for her prize in my workshop. Oh yeah, my workshop just recently concluded ^^ http://roguemina.deviantart.com/journal/39107366/ Eastern Magik
when i saw that ff doodle, i though: "oh look, Ran again" but then i read your post XD

Whoo, more use of the Database!
And I would be very enthousiastic about another Workshop! Perhabs a theme around extremely dynamic poses? I watched Kung Fu Hustle yesterday (again...
) and I'm really up to unwrap Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or House of Flying Daggers again. Just an idea I'm willing to push down your throat. ^^

I really need to stop by here more...everytime i pop my head in, you keep improving and just doing oustanding pieces, your style is really evolving into something special, and i can't wait to see what it turns out to be (not to say your art isn't special now haha...but you have so much potential!)

Was the X-Men sketch just a sketch or were you planning to turn that into a full-blow piece? I think you could push the poses a bit further on Wolverine and Cyclops a bit more - they look a bit weak at the moment. Rogue could be pushed a bit more as well, though not as much as the other two.
As for Murke's comish, I really like the pose. However, she looks a tad bit unnatural. Her arm feels as if she's really shrugging her shoulders while doing a severe downwards stretch. The legs feel a bit out of place as well.
Try taking that pose yourself, and see how you personally would sit. Would your head be tilted backwards, hand placed more flat, legs at more of a flat line, etc? Because at the moment, it feels like she's in a really uncomfortable pose.
I like the ideas you're going with though.

Thanks Thistle and Lady K!
Tommy, that's a great idea! Though not sure where I can find a really good source for dynamic poses.

Screenshots from the movies! Gonna watch them all pretty much soon, if you like I can take some for you. I'll take them anyway, because I'm planning on doing some myself anyway

That's my favorite source of references for poses - there are some nice dynamic poses in there, as well as lots of perspective-y ones. Ravenhawk
@Verene - Oh yeah, I LOOOOVE her! I guess I am just specifically looking for really good movement pieces when the subject is actually doing the action and not just posing to do it. (e.g. like action poses from movies as Tommy said)
@Tommy, I am willing to host the workshop but would you be willing to provide the pose references? ![]() Ravenhawk
So! I started coloring that piece and all that after much proscastinating...but I ended up scrapping the whole thing. It came to me that I am probably being lazy because I wasn't feeling the character in the piece anymore. Yeah I am pretty nitpicky about that aspect of my drawings. >_<
Here's the new pose and since UPS said they are delivering my Cintiq today, I might finish it using that new tool and make this my guinea pig lol. Murke's fine with it >_>. lol, I disabled my original sketch layer so some lines/curves may be missing..*just realized it now* On a GW related thing (*Gasp* I know right? It's been awhile since I drew GW), I made this sketch for Murke. It's her ritualist: Eastern Magik
this one is nice too, i like her smile :3 Is she daydreaming about something *cough*someone*cough* ?
![]() rt sketch is lovely too ^^ Perynne
Oh my... you are getting a Cintiq? Super lucky!
![]() I like the sketches. Murke's rit looks really cute, and the new sketch also looks nice. Perhaps the only thing that looks a bit off is her feet - they look a little too small to be supporting all that weight. Don't be afraid to draw big feet, it just helps to make the character more balanced. ![]() Charlie Dayman
Is the Cintiq a huge step up from the Wacom Bamboo? Let me know how that one plays out, because I'm still in love with my Bamboo.
Anyways, onto the pose - it's really playful, and a huge change from the last one. I kind of miss the old one, though this one is neat. Is she going to be leaning up against anything? At the moment, the angle on her back looks like she'll be resting against something. If not, I think you should angle her forward a bit more. Try taking that pose to get a feeling of how far you'd have to lean in order to keep balance. Also, push that tilt in her head even more. Depending on how far you push it, that could make the pose even more playful. Ravenhawk

So far so good Charlie and yes it's a huge step. I didn't even go through the Intuos series lol. I was also using the Bamboo. I like how natural it feels and the surface is not as slippery as I expected (I used to put a piece of paper on top of my bamboo). Only complaint I can think of right now is the fact that the color seems less saturated in the cintiq compared to my monitor (I have a dual monitor setup now). But since it's a diff LCD display, that is to be expected. I was advised to get a color calibration software but right now I am fine with my set up. I can just drag the preview window in Photoshop in my LCD and the rest of the workspace in the Cintiq. Plus the final retouches for color correction at the end can be done on my LCD monitor anyway. Thanks for the critique on the new version Pery and Charly..uhm..don't kill me because I decided to continue the older version. Got a burst of motivation after I got a cintiq >_>. Still working out the fixes and stuff (esp on her legs). I decided to do the paint over approach. So I am virtually working on one layer on top of the rest fixing everything lol. ![]() PS- Hmm my laptop LCD (where I am typing this post right now) seem to be consistent with the color that I remember on my Cintiq. So yeah that color thing is not a cintiq issue. It's more of an expected behavior from varying types of monitor settings I suppose. Ravenhawk
Done with Murke's artwork:
http://roguemina.deviantart.com/art/Murke-204010477 Also started working on my comic (first panel in particular) and already I am forced outside my comfort zone lol..first time I had to draw a dragon: ![]() And I am officially in love with my cintiq now as it does seem to speed up my workflow Verene
Oooooh dragon.
And I am so jealous that you got a Cintiq. I've got a Graphire3 that I got for Christmas when I was 15 or 16. I'm 25 now ![]() GeminiJuSa
Ah mai gawhd, it looks soo nice. It's gonna be fun to read your comic once it's done
