Ironically, as a Ranger I might have used him. As a Paragon, I'll stick with Morgahn, the one with actual story reasons for being what he is. (Don't get me started on Hayda...)

Rangers are loners.
Aidan may befriend and even flirt with with Zho, but it doesn't go beyond that.
To be with someone, you must be the kind of guy that prefers to be around more people, not just with your pet, and nothing says "You'll never fight alone" better than a paragon.
But that's just how I explain it. It could be any other reason, including the one you give. XD
As for changes in profession, players can't do that. But it look like NPCs can.
For example, Alari Double Blade was a ranger, and now is an Asassin.
