Rune Farming - Ettin exploitation
Danger Russ
Just scored a superior vigor and superior death from the lovely ettins over the last three days. How do I love them let me counts the ways.....
My build....I have farmed these beasts with mm, r/w, w/mo, w/me, and w/n
My favorite build - Pretty fast
W/me (no elites needed)
Tactic 16
Strength 12
Sword 9 - sword minimum
Inpiration 4 or5
Sprint
Desperation blow
Deadly Riposte
Riposte
Savage slash
Dolyacts 18 sec/20
Physical Resistance - 50 sec/20?
Healing signet
I shred these fools! Often times the one I am fighting is not the first to fall.
I try always to have both riposte activiated at the same time for the killing spike. You really do not need savage slash and I often replace it with Victory is Mine for the life boost. I am dropping conditions all over the place. Savage slash ensures the speedy kill. Desperation blow is a monster attack at 16 tactics. There is no coming back for an ettin if they catch both ripostes and a desp blow - too much damage and bleeding.
I use a zealous weapon and a elemental damage weapon. Ettin take big damage for elemental weapons.

On my very first ettin run a couple of weeks ago I got a Sup Death and Sup Soul Reaping in my first five drops!
Haven't gotten anything as good since in what is probably a couple of dozen runs total. Indeed, the best I got were a Sup mesmer rune (big whoop), Major Absorption, and Minor Fire (which has some value, and which I actually needed due to an error that destroyed my prior one).
Oh -- my usual build is straight Earth Magic Ether Renewal -- Ether Renewal, Aura of Restoration, Armor of Earth, Kinetic Armor, Earth Attunement, Stone Daggers, Aftershock, Crystal Wave. I leave from Beetletun, and make sure to kill the Caromi Tengu Wilds BEFORE attacking the Caromi Tengu Scouts, and all is good.

I've been doing this for a couple of weeks or so. Finnaly got a rune worth getting. Some superior elementalist rune. Sold it for 6k. Since all I do is farm it dont matter what rune I get, money is money

Deadly Ripo and Ripo are good skills to use against the ettins and also healing hands is usefull for healing as you don't have to stop and heal like Healing Signet.
icantthinkofonerightnow
I'm currently using this build, which I think is a cheap alternative to many other builds because all skills are possible to get at Desert (except for Riposte, where its at some skill trainer in Copperhammer Mines or Camp Rankor).
Watch Yourself!
Healing Singet
Dolyak Signet
Gladiator's Defense
Riposte
Deadly Riposte
Savage Slash
Sprint
Strength: 10
Swordsmanship: 8+1 (Helm)
Tactics: 12
Sword and Shield can really be anything I think because I was using a 16 AL only shield and an unmodded stance sword.
Forgot to mention my armor is all collector armor from Desert, so if you're not too far in the game (or poor), you can still do this build.

It's the usual run of luck. I remember when I ettin farmed on my ranger months ago to fund his 15k armor...the gold pauldrons would drop like hotcakes. Other times, it'd be no pauldrons whatsoever.
Another thing I do while killing Ettins, I salvage the white pauldrons (a chance to get leather), and make other leather from the nearby Artisan (tanned hide squares seem attracted to me), and sell the leather at the Rare Material Trader when I'm cashing in my runes. Excellent way to add on some profit.

wow i ettin farmed for about an hour and only got a major air magic. -_-"

Thank you all for posting in this thread i have always wanted to farm ettins but never have been able to.
Here is my first run i think i done well for a first run. No major runes tho .

Mournblade
I wonder if you mean superior.
Shadowborn Demon
Heres what i use:
16 Tactics
10 Sword
Rest in Inspiration
Deadly Riposte
Heal Sig
Physical Resistance
Sprint
Thrill of Victory
Savage Slash
Glads Defence {E} - Not vital, dont know what else to put here
Riposte
If you use Riposte + Deadly Riposte at the same time, the next ettin to hit you takes around 200 damage + bleeding. Savage is for Heal sig, thrill of victory is a good + 40 dam, physical resistance i keep up permenantly for the extra armour, and glads adds damage when not using the ripostes.
-edit- could take for great justice instead of glads, would charge riposte every 2 hits....

I think the Anti-Farming thing is bugged . When ever I do ettin farming runs, I start out getting nothing, but the more I go from Nebo Terrace & North Kryta, the better the runes get. Just got a Superior Absorption rune. God I love ettins
Str0b0
I've had a lot of luck using my W/E using tactics and earth magic and the riposte skills for damage. I haven't tried desperation blow but I may.
Jeremy_the_beard
the ettin drops must have changed, ive been on 20+ runs with only 2 gold drops, both being a major and only 1 unIDed drop every 1-2 runs.

I would say you had a bad run yes, but not everyone has such luck. Probably bad luck and not a nerf.
Mournblade
I think i've found just about every rune you can unlock here except for a dang Sup Absorb... Which is the one I want.
*sigh* =)

I cam across this build on Guru I think.. but it has proven to be very veyr effective for me on anything that can not strip enchantments. Since your intersted in a possible axe build consider this:
Skills
Cyclone Axe | Bonetti’s Defense | Vigorous Spirit | Healing Breeze | Healing Hands | Live Vicariously | Strength of Honour | Balthazar’s Spirit
Attribute Allocation
Healing Prayers: 9
Smiting Prayers: 8
Axe Mastery: 11
Strength: Depends on requirements of shield
Tactics: Depends on requirements of Shield
Best Creatures to Farm with this build
Minotaurs (Elona Reach), Desert Griffons (Prophet’s Path – West Exit of Augury Rock), Mountain Troll (Talus Shoot – North Exit of Droknar’s Forge)
How the build Works
Once you spawn to an area cast Balthazar’s Spirit on yourself.
Run to where the monsters are, along the way cast Strength of Honour on yourself once you energy is full or near full.
Once in battle cast Healing Hands on yourself followed by Live Vicariously and Vigorous Spirit
Use Cyclone axe immediately followed by Bonetti’s Defense. Repeat this until the monsters are dead.
Once you are confident of being able to stay alive the elite can be changed to kill monsters faster.
Tips:
·Cycle through targets with your regular attacks to try and keep them all at the same health so they all die at the same time.
·Try to keep healing hands charged. It is basically the back up skill to avoid deaths. Mountain Trolls and Rockshot Devours (you run into them when fighting griffons) may disable your cyclone axe for a short period of time which prevents your healing and massive adrenaline gain. If cyclone axe gets disabled use Healing Breeze, Healing Hands, and Bonetti’s Defense to keep you alive until cyclone axe is recharged.
·Cycle the areas you run to try and prevent dry drops from over farming an area.

PHoenix is cool
The product of 2 of my ettin runs. With these runs i never have to go to town till im full of items. Or most often till im bored of them.
CompactWires
nice nice. I think i'll play my war now... )
CompactWires
oohh btw....hey amster, any ideas what builds should I use as a W/R?? thanks
PHoenix is cool
Its pretty easy compact. With a ranger i would use that troll spell lol what ever its called- health regen ( i dont use rangers ). And use weapon attacks from what ever weapon you use (i find sword is best)
Sword.. (1)final thrust (2) Gash (3) another damaging attack (4) Healing Sig (5) flurry maby (6) A attack that stops them using healing signet (since they use that alot) (7) ranger healy thingy (8) sprint
Not sure about axe lol

Murder In China
Or use traps.
PHoenix is cool
I thought warrior has less energy than rangers..

W/R using traps is not a good idea. Too slow, and probably better to go pure warrior in that case.
Might consider Apply Poison, Tiger's Fury and/or Troll Unguent Murder In China

If Primary, then go Traps. If Secondary, then use Tiger's Fury instead of Flurry. bam23
Do you think an R/W could do it with evasive stances and melee weapons instead of traps?
If not, how would a trapper do it? I'm very bad at trapping :P Murder In China
Evasive stance would do squat against Irresistible blow (Bypasses Evasive Stances).
Either use a heavy Degen build with bleeding and poison and some form of interrupt on their healing signet or stacking traps in one area then lure the Ettins on the tainted ground. Bloodied Blade
You could just degen trap them (flame traps + barbed traps = 11 degen...I know the max is 10).
For W/R (I just made one that uses an axe) I was thinking: Eviscerate {e} Penetrating Blow Executioner's Strike Distracting Blow Troll Unguent Storm Chaser or Sprint Healing Signet Tiger's Fury It would need wilderness survival points, so likely something like: 12 axe 8 tactics 8 beast mastery 8 wilderness survival Tactics is lower just because I have two sources of healing. Haggard
I farm them with Ragemending (or a version of it I invented after hearing a very vague description of RM)
Healing - 8 Strength - 11+1 Axe - 11+1+3 Battle Rage [E] Penetrating Blow Dismember Executioners Strike Axe Twist Disrupting Chop Mending Live Vicariously Rhuobhe

Healing - 8 Strength - 11+1 Axe - 11+1+3 Battle Rage [E] Penetrating Blow Dismember Executioners Strike Axe Twist Disrupting Chop Mending Live Vicariously Nice, if an axe is your cup of tea. In chapter 2 thankfully there will be more adrenaline based axe attacks. For now though, a sword build is slightly faster, in my opinion: Sprint Battle Rage {E} Sever Gash Galrath Final Thrust Live Vicariously Mending LV + mending is overkill, and I only use LV when up against scales (to cancel our price of failure) or if I'm fighting a large group (6+). Sprint reallly helps out since it speeds up the run and allows you to get past scales w/o relying on the speed boost from Battle Rage. Also there are no more sword adrenaline based skills to use Chapter 2 will bring us more however EDIT: Oh and as for attributes: Swordsmanship: 16 Healing Prayers: 8 Rest in Strength with a +1 rune Use a Fiery Sword Hilt and a 15% damage while enchanted sword and you can hit up to 188 with Final Thrust. Just Another Dude
I use sword, with these:
Healing Sig Doylak Sprint Gash Galrath Slash Power Attack Watch Yourself Sever Artery Just pretty much keep doylak and and watch running, if you drop below 100, heal sig it, and youll be fine, otherwise, no problem taking them out... if their healing gets annoying, just replace sprint with Salvage Slash to interrupt it... even without interrupt tho, its not hard to take them out at all. Take on 3 or 4 at a time easily.. 12 Swordsmanship 12 Strength 11 Tactics Naftul Zvi
I use w/me for these, i usually dont take any dmg from any thing with the +92 armor, but alittle damage from irresistable blow:
11 strength 13 sword 12 tactics 5 inspiration physical resistance 100 blades watch yourself galrath final thrust dolyak heal sig sprint I use an icy dragon sword and -2 in stance +45hp in stance sheild Undead Preacher

only problem is those gold will most likely be majors when ID'ed or worthless superiors.... Unless i'm just plain unlucky, I have spent ridiclous hours rune farming and for the time i've put in the profit seems very very small.... The only Superior vigors I've gotten were from dwarves in the shiverpeaks and I still haven't gotten any Sup. Absorption.... I'm going to try the Titan farming.. maybe i'll have some luck there! Turbobusa
a guildie founded a sup abs, sup vigor, and sup smitting. he was just farming for half an hour :|

I've had 3 sup absorbtions (out of 4 total that I've found) from ettins, and about 15 sup vigors and countless sup monk runes.
I find the runs get better the more I farm them, sort of like an anti-anti-farm. B Ephekt
