Six character slots confirmed
Lady Lozza
Actually Cagan I believe Anet feels that paying for slots leads to inbalance, and in many ways I agree.
Zakarr
2 extra character slots is fine. Only somewhat hardcore players would play PvE with all main professions and they don't mind paying double price from the game. At least they shouldn't because they like the game a lot. Don't consider it as waste of money but as "donation" to game developers which helps the future contents of the game. Guild Wars has no monthly fee but they charge more with special way if you really want to play with all professions all the time.
I'm happy to their decision although I have two accounts anyway. I don't know what I'm going to do with 12 character slots but this is good for single account owners.

All they have to do is enable linking of the Xunlai Storage box between accounts, that way you get one shared storage between your accounts and you get the maximum slots (i.e. 8). Everyone wins! But, due to marketing reasons (i.e. encourage people to buy multiple copies of the games) this probably won't happen, shame.
SaucE
2 slots is enough for me cause I really don;t like playing as a monk or ele. SO I dont see myself liking the ritualist at all either. SO I will be able to add an assassin and have a slot open for PVP if I want to give that a try sometime.
Guild storage would be nice.

The solution to satisfy people who want a little more char slots? Make them pay. I would gladly give 10euros for another slot, but that would destroy Anet's 'no monthly fee and no hidden costs' mission statement. |
In short, I'm the typical GW veteran who plays both PvE and PvP. I want more PvE options and diversity (which means more primary and therefore more characters), and more flexibility in PvP (reroll only when necessary). ANet/NCSoft want more bucks, whatever their business model. I'm more than willing to buy extra slots and I don't care about their price tag.
If ANet doesn't allow this for political reasons, I have two options: buying a brand new account from a local retailer and unlocking everything from scratch (more grind, no thanks), or buying a good account on ebay (only decent solution, albeit against the EULA). In the end, I won't be happy because handling 2 accounts with 2 unlocks is not user-friendly, and ANet will lose $40 to $100 because I will give my money to another player instead of buying my character slots from them.
As for chapter 2, two extra slots was *really* the bare minimum. Casual players who own only a couple of PvE toons don't care about slots anyway, and veterans who already have multiple accounts will buy more copies. As for those who would like to have 1 pve of each profession plus some pvp slots on the same account, they have been screwed with chapter 1, and they'll still be screwed with chapter 2.
In brief, 4 or 4+2 slots isn't enough for me and I'm more than willing to pay for more slots. Why is ebay the only viable option? Let me give me my money to ANet already!

If ANET has the ability to link accounts, then wouldn't it be nice to have the option to link your two Chapter 1 accounts, and then link the linked account with Factions.
Linking two Chapter 1 accounts would be similar to a Factions link, providing you 2 extra character slots. Linking Factions another 2.
So:
Link two Chapter 1 accounts = 6 character slots = access to all Chapter 1 professions
Linking a 'linked' Chapter 1 account = 6 character + 2 Factions profession slots = 8 character slots = all professions for Chapter 1 & 2 on ONE account.
Sure you'd still have to buy two Chapter 1 accounts, but not two Factions accounts.

It seems obvious to me that 7 slots is ideal. 6 pve + 1 PvP.
I'm not sure why they didn't do that and make the people it's possible to make happy satisfied.
I don't care for myself and won't complain. I'm 3+1 and I'll get two slots to run up PvE characters and be able to switch professions so it's all good by me.

oh my god is it really that hard.
not linked =
2 seperate games, 4 slots in each totalling 8 but they are both in seperate games. you cannot take your chracters into the new/old area so factions characters cant go to tyria. this way you will play chapter 1 on one account, chapter 2 on another,
linked =
both games are linked, you only get 2 more slots totalling 6 but your characters are free to roam any area and the game is played on one account.

Meh, I play my PvE chars for completeness, so this is just fine. I want to take my mes and necro into Cantha, not create a new accountfull of PvE chars
Big_Iron
At first people were screaming for two more slots with Factions. Now, some are screaming for 4. What are you going to do with 8 slots? For me, 2 is an added bonus. I don't understand why these people think they're being ripped off. If you want eight, install it as a stand alone. Gaile's explanation made perfect sense to me and I don't have a problem with it. The only new profession I was interested in was the Assassin anyway. Now, maybe I'll try a little PvP with the extra slot. Six will be more than enough for me and I'm happy.
Raxxman
My question is, if they're going to release a chapter every 6 months with 2 new classes each chapter, are they going to continue to increase the number of character slots for each chapter you purchase?
wolfe2dale
I really don't understand all the complaints? We finally get a decent online game that doesn't charge a monthly fee & all people can do is whine*I want more* at Anet....
Sorry, I'm very happy with the 6 character slots, this easily offers enough opportunity to try out any variation of the game.
If you guys don't like what's on offer then buy an alternative.....wait a second, there isn't one.

6 slots = 5 PVE and 1 PVP.
With the next expansion coming in 6 months time (i'm guessing) who can honestly say they are going to fully complete the game with all 5 slots AND play thorugh all the endgame content AND have enough time to play PVP?
If you really spend every waking hour playing this game to the point where you can do all of the above in 6 months, then perhaps you deserve to buy another account - ANets bandwidth and servers don't come free you know.

this one is simple
4 X 50 = 200
6 X 100 = 600

Why is it that the people bitching at the ones (me included) complaining that +2 slots isn't enough don't understand what we are saying? We are asking for more than 2 extra slots. We are not being greedy, hell, everyone here who is asking for more is actually willing to pay for extra slots. That sure as hell is gonna put a big dent in ArenaNet's bandwidth costs, what with a few extra slots per account and some money forked over to pay for them.

A gruesome amount of gameplay to go yet So I arent bothered I cant finish the game as Necromancer or Elementalist. To make matters worse, in 6 months GW III will be on its way I need more time to play this game!!
Thumbs up Anet!

I can't believe you guys are happy about only 2 slots with linked accounts.
I think the whole initial statement about 1 additional slot was to make you guys go "oh thank god we get 2 slots" instead of realizing your getting screwed by not getting 4. Well I'm not fooled and I'm angry.

Anet have supplied an entirely new chapter on time with the only additional cost being the price of the game itself...
But, some people, like yourself, are not satisfied, you always want more than is being offered. So, where do you draw the line then? 2 more slots, 10, 100?
Anet have said that they feel it would unbalance the game to allow some people to have more character slots than others, I agree with them on this.
& that is why I am bitching....

Can you imagine going to restaurant with a friend and being told that if you both order a burger and fries and you put in on the same check only one of you will actually receive fries?

I quoted the whole darn thing because I'm sick and tired of those who don't get it, suggest it'd be imbalanced (eating the marketing line hook line and sinker) or calling us whiners. I don't think its right to milk us for slots - but to not even give us the options means my account might turn into a 'UAS' for someone else. I'm not willing to play the deletion game and have the experience dulled for me due to some crazy ANet (mis)conception.
Why do people continually feel there's a nutty character slot # request going forward? This would be a one-time resolution of the original deficit - I wouldn't care only 2 slots if I didnt have only 4 to share across PvE and PvP for prophecies. If you can't see how quickly you could run out there especially if you want to not be a level 20 with new friends/guildies/show up in pre-sear I don't know what to say to you.
I tag on here because maybe if there are some more recognizable names getting into the picture ANet might wake up since obviously the original noise didn't do the job. Yeah and once again pigs can fly outta my you know where...

1 question immediately comes to mind,
2 slots for PvE or 1 for PvE and 1 for PvP? If its the latter I will not be happy, I want to be able to put both new profs through the PvE game without sacrifcing any of my current characters.

I think the reason that some of us have problems with this slot system is that ArenaNet really hasn't provided any sort of reasoning behind their decision - at least none that they've shared with us. In fact, it's kind of been that way since the beginning - you get 4 character slots for GW, you can't buy any additional ones and that's that. Now there's factions, where it's the same thing - you can get individual unlinked factions with 4 slots and that's that, or you can take a hit on character slots and merge factions with your existing GW account. Why though?
I'm sure ANet has some mystical plan behind this, but I for the life of me can't figure it out. It can't be account sharing related (which was originally thought shortly after GW release), because as someone has already stated in this thread, ANet would offer the option to purchase more slots in that case. It also can't be server space/bandwidth related either, because both are only affected marginally by a change from 2 to 4 slots (I've programmed server/client/database applications before), and it would ultimately be the same in terms of bandwidth and space if you bought the accounts separately anyway.
I think it would help a great deal if ArenaNet made some sort of statement explaining their logic behind this, so maybe then I could understand why we're being forced to make unnecessary sacrifices to our factions game purchase. Because this just feels like this is the beginning of annoying choices we'll be forced to make with each upcoming expansion in the future, and if that's the case, I don't know if that's something I really want to put up with.

This way people will share the same account.
They are just preventing people from sharing accounts, with 6 now we have the option to create a faction character plus maybe a pvp character or a mule.
If they keep adding slots then we will have extra ones that other people in the house can use which is against EULA
Thats why I think its not a good idea to have new professions each chapter. It will be way unmanigable in the future especially with dual professions as Numa Pompilius puts it.

Preventing account sharing? Depending on the person, you could buy three accounts between two people and share the third easily.
Imbalance to those who can't afford extra slots? I HAVE A BETTER ADVANTAGE IN THE GAME THAN YOU DO BECAUSE I HAVE 7 CHARACTERS AND YOU ONLY HAVE 6 BWAHAHAHA!... Or we could go with the other logic that to prevent imbalance to people who can't afford more slots, we'll just gimp the entire community.

essentally someone who buys and merges accounts has an advantage over someone who doen't buy factions.
They have 2 more slots, 2 more classes to choose from, different skills for all classes.
Balance isn't so much an issue here from my perspective

I personally am quite please with 2 spare slots. Unfortunately, I've deleted one on my second, so...I'm not entirely certain what I'm going to do with the spare slots.
While expecting one slot, I got rid of a character to get the most available stuff.
btw, <3 flamers.

Now the question is whether the CE will give one extra slot. If that's true, Anet will see a lot more CE sales, which means more money for them. So the limitation of character slots is definitely a marketing decision.

I say let us all rejoice for getting two slots. This virtually garuntees every new expansion will give two more.
Funny how the debate shifted so quickly from getting only one extra instead of two to "why dont we get 4?"

You do have to feel sorry for the Factions only people, who only get 4 slots to choose from 8 classes to play.
In defense of those who want 1 slot per primary class, which includes me ^.^, let me say this:
It is not just having to delete a lvl 20 char with 15k armror, etc, etc. It is having the option to play any of my chars for whichever purpose I need. A guildie needs a monk to help with a quest, I got one, they need a tank, got one, need a nuker, etc. Oh, you need a class I don't have? Sorry bud, can't help you there.
Not to mention, boredom, I like to play my Ranger, Warrior, Monk, and Necro ... but would also like to experience playing a Mesmer and Elem, without having to destroy a well loved character.
As far as an extra PvP slot in addition, not really needed, once you have unlocked all skills with all 6 primary classes, and ascended and done the 2ndary class change quests, you can take any of your 6 to go pvp, changing 2ndary as necessary. Which is something of a problem even for PvP only chars, who you have to remake to change 2ndary.
