I bought two sets of the 1.5k armor for my W/N since I like switching them depending on what I plan to be doing. I have the platemail for when I plan to be taking more damage and the Gladiator's for when I need the extra energy for casting curses. I just carry the extra set around with me in the field so I can switch them whenever.
I saved up enough money and materials for both sets by just playing through the missions and quests in the area normally. Didn't go farming once. Just don't spend your money on stupid things and you can make enough quite quickly.

slightly off topic - but a good way to make a couple of plat. I recently helped out a couple of people through ascension (all 3 missions). between the 3 missions and the runs to get to the mission towns I made about 2 plat in one night.
I know its not as much as I can make in the same amount of time farming, but it can be fun (as long as you dont get jerks who get pissed everytime they die, because you do die in the desert).
So go out, and help some newb get through Ascension, make a couple of plat and do your good deed for the day

yeah... iv played through probably 30 missions, because thats what ANet says to do in order to unlock skills and items, and maybe got 1 gold, 4 purples, and a handful of crappy blues. Such a waste of time. They need to return farming at least a little.

It hasnt been nerfed to the point that it is useless - and if you are just starting out there it is great. However for people that have been farming for a while now you can tell the diffrence, yes you still get purple/gold items, but not as much as before.

If by the fortunate and rare chance you happen to get a Gold weapon drop with a really high health mod, or a weapon with a high level vampiric mod... and the mods extract when using an expert salvage kit on them... well, then it can be quite worth the time.
A friend of mine got a Gold 5:1 Vampiric Bow drop there, and was able to extract the vampiric bow string from it... sold it for 35k in like 20 minutes. However, I got a Gold Hale Staff with a +24 health bonus once and when I used the expert kit on it got back 3 wood planks. So it's a gamble.
Just because it's a gold or rare item, doesn't mean it's worth anything.

There are only a few gold items that sell for alot, and they're almost impossible to find. I'd much rather find an item with a nice upgrade on it, and salvage it. That can get you up to 100K sometimes. And on gold items there are mostly 2 or 3 upgrades, so the chance of getting the upgrade you really want is pretty low. Finding a blue/purple/gold item doesn't really makes a difference to me, as long as I can get a nice upgrade from it, that's the way how I make my money, I've never found a gold item that I actually sold for much..

lately i have been doing drake runs in Divinity Coast because the barrel runs just werent cutting it. the drakes give me more gold items than the barrels and purple items are almost useless for trying to salvage upgrades because the upgrades suck on purple items. barrels in DC yield way too many purples and not enough gold items like they used to. if anyone knows a better chest farming spot that they dont mind sharing with me please send me a private message thanks a lot

I used to know a good one by Ettins Back, 2 chests with about 150 gold and up all the time. They nerfed it though, which pissed me off because I made a goldmine out of it. I want a close chest(s) with over 100 gold everytime. If anybody knows such a spot, pm me, if you want to keep it a safe secret, your word is clear with me, I'll even pay you gold, the Ettins Back was the best one ever, but A-Net had to nerf it, and now I'm so poor

I don't PM anybody at all, I've been looking for the past 3 hours for a spot and I can't find anything. I just wish MY Ettins Back chests were back, becasue I think some asshole saw me zoning and zoning and decided to see what I was doing, so he probably /bugged. I was seriousley the only one who knew about that spot. I guess I'll just go look some more.....

Yes, I'm sure you were the only person to know about that chest in "Ettin's Back". Out of the thousands of people playing don't you think that might be a little ignorant. However, i feel your pain about it getting nerfed, but my problem is not getting a spot of mine nerfed it is finding a good spot.

For all of you people worrying about being detected as a fake bot, you won't be. Bots do the EXACT same thing EVERY time. It's like an animated avatar (I say that because I was trying to think of a comparison and Artemis has one). It doesn't change AT ALL, and it could do the same thing forever as long as an outside force doesn't mess it up

There is actually one in Sanctum Cay mission....just run past the fire imps....get to the drakes and you'll see that guy hiding behind the rock....that chest or barrel usually drops heavy gold. It's only one though but I guess it would work for now. Will post further ones but if I find a heavy one, I'll have to PM then I guess.

In my opinion, yes that is the best way to get to the Divinity Coast barrel.
