I agree that it should be decided before the mission is started: watch or skip.
I also agree that Anet should do something about the loss of life during the cutscenes (some sort of time freeze).
Finally, I think the majority of the discussion is about cut scenes during missions. Not about running or being run.
Hired Blade
I play MM alot and its annyoing that they die in movie mode. Also another thing that I hate is when someone is being attacked in the movie you come out and your dead. I think that GW should make it so minions, and players dont loose life durring the movie. If somone doesnt skip I normaly take advantage go get coffee or change cds. =)

Skip the scene. If you want to see it for the story take the henches and hit the cut scenes. |
+ The only time the MM argument is even valid is in Thunderhead Keep maybe, in other places minions aren't that important that its worth for a newcomer to give up part of the story line. Same goes for Bonding and the like.

I only skip the cutscene if I'm the last person not to have done so and have seen it before. If it's my first time watching it, then I will watch it.

I agree that if you are playing through the game the first time don't bow to pressure and skip the scenes. Besides... no one knows who didn't skip the scenes.
Thallandor
I agree as well, its nice to sit through the end scene of thunderhead keep mission after a tough fight to calm the nerves from the battle even though we seen it for the 30th time. I usually dont skip the cutscene as long there is one other person who hasnt skipped it hence not giving him/her any pressure to do so in a PuG. Except for some missions like infusion runs where not skipping might result in some sort of death bug (not sure if they fixed it since our grp always skip it lol ). Could just be me since i like looking at my character and hearing him speak abit too much...maybe just a litttle......nevermind.

Second: THK is probably the one place where cut scene doesn't matter to MM, as keeping a viable minion army up after the cut scene is extemely difficult do to time lag between mobs and lack of usable corpses. It is missions like Sanctum Cay and Thirsty River (among others) that the lack of minions after the cut scene can make a big difference in the outcome.
Granted, you can do the missions without the minion army. But why even bother having a MM on the team if you aren't going to utilize the full abilities of the build?

Riverside Providance is a good place to die during the cutscene, I have.
Carinae
As a full-time Necro and MM, I would like to say that the best solution for me would be to have the characters and minions 'frozen' for the duration of the cutscene. Not only does this give the beginners time to see the storyline unfold, but it gives ME time to grab a drink or dart to the bathroom.
You see, as a MM, I never get a break during missions, usually I don't even have time to chat with the team, other than quick answers and body language.
If minions didn't degen during cutscenes, I could let it play and catch my breath.

Thirsty River is NOT in Kryta. And as I stated, ANY mission can be done without MM. You can get Verata's Sacrifice in the Villany of Galrath mission, but by just having Blood of the Master maintaning minions is even MORE difficult.
I don't want to deprive you of the privilege of seeing the cut scenes, but I was making a point of times (when you want that MM on your team) that it is better for the entire team to skip.
And I didn't like the fact that you called someone "retarded"!

I can't believe this debate is still going on. How hard is it to comprehend the democratic process. Did all you people still arguing that majority doesn't matter just completely miss your government and economic classes? What were you doing? Smoking pot in the bathroom? I mean Jesus it's not that difficult a concept to grasp. By all you folks rationale one dissenting vote in any democratic system should hold sway over the majority and that's not only unfair but just flat out stupid. I tried not to be insulting and I tried to be nice about this but I'm utterly exasperated with every single person on here who has said that a majority vote shouldn't matter just because someone is new. I'm sorry maybe I missed the day in government and economics when the teacher was explaining how the democratic system works. Maybe I was out the day she said." The majority wins but only if no one is new. Then the new person's vote counts for more than the majority vote." I can hardly believe this is even open for debate anymore. Maybe we should start giving our junior senators in congress like ten votes? How about that? Would that be fair? I'm sorry I don't care if the guy is new or if he's played through a hundred times if the party, you know the people helping them through the mission, wants to skip then the dissenter should skip. It's not just the one persons mission nor is it the one person's time. It's everyone's mission and everyone's time and therefore everyone should vote on how to do it. That's the whole purpose of displaying the number of people who want to skip. If, as you say, the game developers had implied their "right" to watch the cutscenes then there would be no point in having that display now would there? Hell there wouldn't even be an option to skip.
I think it is juvenile to hold up an entire group against the majority vote. It is no different from the three year old who digs in his heels and refuses to move from the toy aisle even after the rest of the family has voiced their desire to go eat. It's a tantrum plain and simple and it is selfish. Selfishness is defined as being concerned chiefly or only with oneself. How dare you people say that seven out of eight people wanting to skip are being selfish. It's the one who doesn't that is being selfish. They are concerned chiefly or only with their desire to see the cutscene. There are some seriously skewed points of view here and I can only hope that you people are applying them only to this game because I shudder to think of the people that have to deal with you in your daily life if you think that one person should always get their way.

this is a game and not a democracy.
note the simple facts and learn grasshopper
1. the people cannot be identified as skip/no skip which is to protect the watchers from people like you.
2. there is not a coded majority overide which is again to protect people who want to watch from people like you.
Anet/NCsoft made 2 decisions to let someone who wants to watch overide a bunch of .....who simply want to rush some mission.
Str0b0
No ANet believed in the better nature of people and an ingrained sense of fair play. Unfortunately they took the optimistic high road in this case. As for my co workers well since I'm the boss what I say does matter but that's neither here nor there. You haven't provided one good reason why the majority vote shouldn't matter in this game. Democracy is a simple concept that anyone can embrace and it's been around for years because it works. Hey I'm sure you know better than hundreds of years of civilization though. All you can say for yourself is." This isn't real life." I see so I should be as rude and caustic and flat out evil as I can. I mean this isn't real life so none of the behavioral mores that we hold by should apply here right? I should be able to steal from you in game, scam you, rip you off and nothing should be done because like you said this is a game, real life rules and values don't apply. Weak argument.

GW is not a democracy.
I guess it's more like a congresional vote, and that one out of eight is the person who decides to filibuster (sp?).
And we will not reach a concensual agreement here, as it is more of an opinon with the game mechanics deciding the final outcome. The only way to resolve the problem is to come to agreement before starting the mission, and hope that all who have agreed to skip the cut scene do so.

You spelled it correctly although it takes a 2/3 majority to end a filibuster.
I'm not saying the game is a democracy but democratic principles should still apply to cooperative groups. It's the only fair way to decide anything. If you were out with a group of friends and all of you wanted to see a certain movie that you had been looking forward to but one person wanted to go and see some godawful piece of crap would you all go and suffer through the crap all because of one person? It could be argued that a group of friends is not a democracy either however I bet if you are honest you'd own up to the fact that you would all go see the movie that the majority wants to see.

I agree that unless it has been prior stated (and for a good reason), skipping the cutscenes should not be mandatory.
I also agree that ANet should make everything else stop during the cutscenes, i.e. health and energy. I once held the aggro of all the White Mantle for my team as they got to Evennia/Saidra (whoever it is...) at the end of the Riverside mission.
When the cutscene came on, my character (leader of the party) ran to meet Evennia... with fifty White Mantle giving me a massage with their axes. My character survived in the cutscene, thankfully, but when it went back to the game in the brief period between cutscene and loading screen I was dead.

OK a serious reason.
a person going through for the first time might not ever come back that way again and decide that redoing the mission for x minutes was not worth doing just to see a missed scene.
it would cost that person however long it was in wasted redo the mission time to see it.
the cost to the rushing 7 is at the most a minute or so for most of them.
all you have to do is wait for a minute grab a drink or pit stop and little lost time to you.
this is one mission one time (you can dump him/her if you need to redo it) and only a few minutes .
again if you announced skip before leaving you in right
if you yell skip without warning you are wrong.
and Anet has had almost a year to correct any failing by putting in a majority overide (which they havent)
Markaedw
We are getting a little defensive here.
The real question here is or should be: when is it ok/rude to skipp or not to skip.
Rude not to skip:
1. When not skipping is detremental to the team. IE underattack or hex
2. When the MM ask you to: mainly to preserve his minions.
Granted they are disposable, but MM have little or no attack skills equiped, it is all about minions, to maintain them requires health sacrifices and a lot of work. Its all about momentum, getting is alot of work and keeping it just as hard.
I don't know about other MM but I'm usually ok with losing them all if they are old (meaning 3 or more minutes), a 5 minute old minion, nothing but me and 2 monks can keep it going. If the MM has a lot, probally you should skip, if it has been a while or just a couple, we'll probably get over it.
When is it ok to watch the vid:
1. End of mission
2. When the above conditions do not apply
When is it ok to make not skipping as issue,
1. When the first conditions apply
When it is not ok to make not skipping an issue
1. When they are new and the first conditions did not aply.
I consider it never ok to flame some one for the vid decision.
The bad part is, often the vids contain important story information, and it is a shame the watching them causes problems.

Str0b0, I think the problem is that we all missed the day Bush announced that his new target in the spread of democracy was Guild Wars.
There is no government in Guild Wars, so I have no clue what you're trying to say with all this dictatorship stuff. Not everything can be decided with a majority vote, and not everything is solved in democracy (especially when applied to a game).

Point taken. Still in game and here are different. I'll try to be more patient with people , but I'm not going to promise I can stand to do it.
Can we all at least agree though that anyone that wants to watch a cutscene should say so before starting the mission?

I'm with just about everything that has been said.
Majority rules, bad idea. Too many people are experience at this point in the timeline and pretty much all scenes would be skipped which is not proper for the newbie.
Freeze health/energy and the like for scenes. Good idea, should be implemented. I can't see a negative to this.
Skipping, I have no problem if
1. It was agreed at the beginning of the mission to do this.
2. If it's a run, which is basically #1 cause you are there to get through it as fast as you can.
3. If each person chooses to do so without outside influence, it is their choice.
Not skipping is perfectly acceptable. If you want to watch it, watch it. If you haven't seen it before, watch it. Also if you haven't seen it before there is no valid reason I could live with to force a person to skip it, and to force them to have to do the mission again with henchmen just to see the scene.
MM requesting skip. If people choose to skip for the MM, that is their choice. If there is someone new that hasn't seen the scene, that person can choose to skip (by their own choice) or choose to watch it. Again, there is no valid reason why someone who has not seen the scene before to skip save by their own (un-influenced) decision.
I really don't see how it is any more complicated than that. When I go to play factions and I team up with other humans, if the question was not put forward before the mission starts and I have not seen the cutscene I can promise that I won't be skipping it. Save when under attack, however that should never happen; clear the area before talking to NPCs (aka play the game) or get together with others that want to run it, and would skip all scenes anyway.

Ok I can see this is a problem for alotta noobs obviously.. The skpping of the cutscenes is personal preference people should be allowed to not skip but in certain cases people have not skipped cutscenes and I was ready to reach out and touch someone.. First of all there are about TWO places that are MAJOR problem zones. First of all In the Ice Caves of Sorrow if, when you meet sadira and evennia, you do not sip 9/10 probability the mursaat will come from behind and MURDER you since generally in the Ice caves people are not infused then spectral agony is about a four second kill. Next in Thunder Head Keep(notoriously dubbed "the noob barrier") after you clear out the stadium. IF you have an MM with you(which is recommended since a good MM can clean up with the vast amount of corpses in THK) YOU NEED TO SKIP since that scene is gawdawfully long all the minions will die and you will probably be screwed unless you also have a good bonder(in this case MM isnt needed since bonder can make you near invincible if he is good enough)..Well there goes my rant..GL
Thom
Str0b0,
You act as if voting theory is cut and dry and that majority rule is the end solution to everything. Nothing could be further from the truth. The liturature on voting mechanisms and group decision making is huge in economics.
Realize that you are wrong. There is no inherent superiority of majority rule in this application. The benefit gained by one member here normally surpasses the utility of the time lost by everyone else (except in the various running and MM situations).
If people have to tell you that they want to watch cut scenes, you are going to kick them or leave which makes grouping even more annoying.

Still beating the dead horse, eh?
It's not even a question of skip/not skip voting, Tyrian kingdoms aren't democracies anyway. :P It's a question about respecting peoples' decisions about it. If someone chooses to watch the cut scene, let them do so in peace. Flaming them about it will only make you look pathetic. When I'm in a PUG and I see someone flaming because the cut scene played all the way through, I'll be sure to not skip the next one, if there is one.
But freezing battle action during cut scene should be something to seriously consider, it's not exactly very probable that someone will sit there and listen to an NPC when they're being beaten on.

The OP's/thread's complaint isn't going after how you act about cut scenes. If you do as you say in your posts; always saying you want to skip all cut scenes before entering a mission, you are doing perfectly fine to dump them if they don't.
See my comment much earlier about how the "7 of 8 want to skip" isn't truly democratic voting on whether to skip or not. I may be one of the 7 at times, but since I know it requires a unanimous "vote," I'm more (not entirely) abstaining than voting to skip. Even if it were a majority vote, there are plenty of times when majority votes are not used... and reasons why... and I could go on and on and on if you wish. Feel free to PM me.
