For some days now the server is extremely slow. Pages often time out and take a long time to open (5 seconds or more).

I've had terrible slowdowns all day on the site. Usually the front pages load fine, but the forums are a pain to navagate.

All times are GMT +1. The time now is 05:18 AM. Very slow all night here, and I've been on from 19.00 to 05.20 GMT +1 (12 hour nightshift ftl)

Several database errors in the evening, which gave way to massive slowdown as the night progressed.

Feels like the bad old days of DOS attacks...

edit 06.35 GMT +1 - got home, 2Mb DSL, pages still loading slow as heck.

First off... I love the site and I want to see it supported through ad revenue so it stays free.

Now for the issue:

When I use the forums (with the latest Firefox) I find that a lot of time is spent waiting for one of the ad servers to connect. Usually it's adbrite or tribalfusion that makes the browser wait. During that time I basically get an empty screen and no forum text aside from the Guru emblem/header at the top of the page.

Sadly I've had to resort to using Adblock to filter out the ads from adbrite and tribalfusion. This has fixed my problem. I'm no longer waiting for Guru pages to load.

I'm not sure how you guys can fix this, but I will stop filtering adbrite and tribalfusion as soon as it is fixed. I want to see this site thrive and stay free, but I just can't wait 30-60 seconds per page on load times.

MelechRic, thanks for the feedback. I'll be sure to pass it on to the server admin and see what we can do about this. We are seeing possible slowdowns on other aspects as well (such as site stats) so are looking into it.

This is my weapon of choice when search is working. My request is, would it be possible to have separate buttons for New Posts (Ventari's Sell) and New Posts (all others).

The reason I ask is that I use Guru as a source of information on the game(s), and have little or no interest in the Trade Forums. When I do a New Posts seach, a large majority of the new posts are auction/sell/buy/pc.

Or is there some complicated formula I can enter into the search engine that searches for new posts but omits certain forums?

You can go into Advanced Search and attempt it that way. By choosing the forums you'd like with the date range... as for an easy and uncomplicated way... no. Unfortuantely VBulletin has some restrictions that I just can't get around

Nice info MelechRic, I could definately use something to speed up these load times. Hopefully, this will help me as well. It seems as though I have been doing more waiting then reading lately. Im off in search of answers.

I'm having problems with my home computer doing this. Not many problems acessing the site at work (except for this morning I couldn't get in at all). But it does seem to be that add that triggers it.

I have this problem all the time.. that is when i can actually load GWG up.

the past 3 days guru has been inaccessable to say the least. this is the first chance ive had to get in here (mind you i had to reload the page about 10-15x before i could even connect, resulting in various database errors etc)

all i can say about that is "GGGGRRRRR"

my biggest issue with the ad server stuff is more in the auction area then the regular forums. It 9/10 hangs up when trying to load the different sections, clicking on an auction item or placing a bid.

this forum is the most active forum of all gw fansites, but many things keep it from being the best. for one, many times load times are insane, or the pages do not load at all. also, i dont bother post new threads because it becomes nearly impossible to reach this page again with the search button always disabled. Is there any solution to this? i really would like to use guildwars gurus more.

It really annoys me that even the members of GWG are getting pages disabled, and have to click the Refresh button thirty-some-odd times before the page actually loads. Members should get foremost access to pages, and only guests should have to go through the Refresh clicking. We signed up, and are loyal to our accounts, why are we getting pounded with the annoyance of the 'Page Cannot Be Found' and the Refresh button?

The last time we experienced such annoying prolonged problems was during a DDOS attack (Distributed Denial-of-Service). For the most part, the rest of it's generally server hiccoughs and spikes in forum usage relating to in-game problems (such as when GW was locked down due to the trader reset, and everyone flocked to the guild wars fansites, overloading most of them).

The server admins are aware of the recent problems and if it were an easy fix, I'm sure the servers would be running smoothly. But they're not, so they're probably working on it. A little patience goes a long way with these kind of problems.

I'm a moderator, and it's hard to moderate under these conditions. So, for the most part, I don't when I can't, and I do when I can. When I face multiple repeated database errors, I just give up for a while and come back later. Partly because I've heard spamming refreshes bombards the server and makes it worse, and partly because I know it's not getting any better immediately <_<

But despite all of that, I know Inde works very hard to get things done around here, and any problems will be fixed within the fastest humanly possible timeframe. And if it still takes a while, then that's unfortunate, but I doubt anything can really be done to make it any faster, short of shelling out resources a free forum run on ad revenues can't possibly provide.

Ack.

Thanks for the info, Inde

I'll be laying off the getnew for a while anyway; it probably doesn't help with the current server/database issues!

Although, it's been fine for the last couple of hours. Sorted?

We are certainly aware of all the problems and I apologize for any inconvience. We are installing some patches over the next day or two that should help. Please remember that all the people on this site from the staff to even the server admin do this in their spare time and have jobs, school, family and more. So things take longer to get done because we can't work at this 8 hours straight in a day. Thanks so much for your patience and as I have updates I will give them.

Ah... so it could be the advertiser bots that could be the problem? If not, thanks for putting it back us to start talking again.

When is the search function going to be enabled again? The google search doesn't find anything at all and it takes forever to search back through the forums page by page with the slow loading times.

I have had constant, and I do mean constant issues with this site, especially the auction areas.

I find that the forums seem to be alright, but when I start checking out auction items, etc...the connection is horrible.

I'm lucky to be able to load 50% (average about 20%).

I like this site, but it's driving me crazy when trying to check out auctions or even sell something becuase I can't get the proper steps done in order to sell something or view most items.

After the maintainance I only have had slower loading times I'm afraid . Or are you still busy with it Inde? In that case, ignore my post and I'll report back in a week or so.

Some of the server maintenance is not yet complete. This is why I made no promises and even hate to give a firm date. What we are waiting on is what will improve site performance some and will take between 30 minutes to an hour to complete. So whenever they do take the time to complete it I'll let you all know.

For what it is worth, I have completely quit using this site because of the excessive time it takes to browse.

I hope that the speed of this site will be addressed, but even in logging in and replying to this thread sent to me today I was irritated with the speed.

Good luck

LOL I wanted to check out the earlier pages but it immediately gave me a "database error" screen :/

Hope this message goes through...

EDIT: Seems to work (slowly) after a few tries

Keep up the improvements!

Oh I understand how frustrating it is... more so than any of you actually. Try modding, searching IP's, posting news, articles, coding and more with this server. And yet... I don't just walk away. Kind of baffling don't you think? That I'm willing to sit here and stick it out when honestly, trying to submit a news post 6 times while receiving database errors isn't just a waste of my time Really, I feel bad that any of you have to experience a fraction of my frustration as well, but if I could go out and buy an entire server rack specifically for this site I would.

Rest assured, it's not an issue we are ignoring. It's something that we are working diligently on. And I won't ever abandon any of you!!!! (K, I got kind of mushy there.)

The forums are smoother (still get the Database Error from time to time) and load generally faster than before.

The SITE however (and especially the auction section) have gotten WORSE it seems since the maintence, It takes like 6+ times to even get a page to load, and forget bidding on something.

i use the forum primarily anyway, sdo It isnt a huge problem.

Inde

Former, that's because the bulk of the maintenance did not happen yet. This was performed last night and we had to bring the site down for about 5 hours (yes longer than expected there). So any improvements you should start seeing today. No guarantee to the improvements, as problems could still arise but we are crossing our fingers.

The server load is all ready down significantly but our peak time is between 12-4 PM PST so I'll be watching it all today to see how it performs for both the auctions and the forums.

Just wanted to say that as of right now, I have a _two minute_ load time for each page I open here, and about half the pages time out. For the last week or so it's been like molasses, but now it's downright ridiculous.

Are you guys still being DDOS'ed?

EDIT: Oh yeah... 100MBit connection (yes, really) in Sweden.

Lagging terribly too the past few days, taking ages just to log in and post, threads taking forever to load up. Different ISPs, different locations same result.

Is it just the number of people using the site, or DOS attack? Maybe time for a different host?

Oh Noes! The 'burbs!

4:30 am pacific time, and I'm getting long load times in the forums. Some are worse than others, but they're all pretty bad. The pages just sit there, doing nothing, then when something actually engages, it loads pretty quickly.

The heat is playing with my sleep patterns, which is why I'm up at this ungodly hour. I kinda thought I'd get better performance from the forums this early, but no.
