Server Speed Feedback Needed

I've stated this numerous times, large sites do not have bandwidth concerns. We have unlimited bandwidth. And all sites have maintenance, problems and deal with issues continually. I'll just repeat myself here, but GWOnline was inaccessible for 3 days last week and is smaller than us, GuildWiki had to get a new server because of their server load problems and they are smaller then us, I frequently see database errors on GW OGaming at nights and they are smaller then us, and we have problems too.

Yes I know a DDOS attack when I see it. And we have been working on it. If anyone knows anything about servers, it's not as simple sometimes as just banning an IP to stop it. We are working on the load problems continually, I have referenced this everywhere. As I have updates I give them.

Well this morning (2-26-06 6:45am aprox) it was a tad slow on the clicking of a post. Nothing to bad...

kzap, I noticed you took down the names of users in a forum again. That was causing problems? Or, are you just "trying" something out?

Just wondering if tabbed browsing of 3 tabs (one for each section of the forum) adds to server load.

I am sure most firefox, IE beta, and opera users use between 2-3 tabs.

Anyhow, if it is detrimental I will stop doing it and just use one tab.

Read this: http://grc.com/dos/grcdos.htm and then you'll probably stop asking why we have trouble with DOS attacks. Credit to Loviatar for pointing it out in Q&A first.

If you don't sit there and click your "submit" button a thousand and one times it shouldn't really be a problem even with lag you might get. Definately good bits on the rest of it though, don't post another one asking for it to be removed, you guys can remove your own posts and doing so is definately the fastest, easiest, and most sensible way of getting a double post removed.

Worst case I remember thus far is a person who posted SEVEN copies of his thread in riverside, over about 3 seconds.
But yes, I always wonder about this. Even before the 'quick edit' [and the heavy lag days] feature came on to the Guru forums, people would edit their post to say, "Whoops. Doubleposted", or triplepost to remark about their doublepost. The sheer lack of commonsense astounds me at times.

(God, it's playing up again as I write this)

Anyway, it's not because of user load, it's because of DDOS attacks from some moron who's upset he got banned.

I am having no problems....only a "touch" of lag....nothing big. I have come to the conclusion that if it is in one of it's "bad moods" lag wise then I will just log off until later.

All right, we are trying quite a few things with the server last night and today. Sorry for all the downtime as we try to make it more stable. As I have updates I'll give them.

Is this why the Members in the forums at the bottom of the screen is On then Off? Seems like when it is On...then the server is slow...when it is Off it is allot snappier.

Appreciate that.

Need a nice new Stanley Hammer for some "Tweaking"?

(Not for the precious server...for the people that are attacking the precious server....)

All right, server is back up after some maintenance. We still need to optimize it but we'll see how it holds up. Thanks everyone for your continued patience.

Server seems to be doing a restart at about 3am (server time) each day and it forgets to restart apache. We'll get that fixed.

Seems to be running decently well so far. I've been cruising around here for a good hour now. (yay for not doing anything in class).

Seems to be doing better then it has been. Yay for fixing it!

And again, Apache went down when the server restarted at about 3AM. Had to bring that up manually so it's something we are checking into again.

I'm getting a gateway timeout for the add banners at the top of each GWG page, causing 1+ minute page loads every time I move pages or post. Is there any way to disable the above until the add server admins fix whatever issue is hitting their boxes?

I'm seeing this problem on both my home and work PC's, so I know it's not a local issue. Either way, GWG is almost unusable in its present state due to very slow page loads.

lord shar,

Working on it now. This is a problem only with IE right now, Firefox users are fine.

All right, it's not the ad server. So Opera and IE, weird problem. I'll continue looking into it.

Hmmm, just deleted some work that I did today on VB... not that either. Let's keep trying here.

OMG...absolutely terrible. I had to run Firefox just to get to this page. However, I am getting continual "time out" messages with Firefox too, so I wouldn't say it's just IE and opera. Everytime it tries to load a page, it gets stuck on mmoguru...adserver.

Here's what I was going through while trying to post this.

The ads don't show up on firefox for me, but the pages load well enough. I don't use anything other than pop-up blockers, and this is not a usual occurrence.

FWIW, I've also been getting these today in Firefox. I don't think it is browser dependent. FF usually tells me that it is waiting on www.evostats.com while waiting for the ad to display. I usually get "the connection has timed out" in the ad display space ...
