Maybe just restrict it to one character, once per month? You know, no different than registering a toon for Hero Battles.

like with the HB account register thing , make it so you can change every 30 days so you don't do so too often

OMG I'd sooo love to see this happen! I'm tired of my main character's name and would like to change it, even just once. I think that yes, to prevent abuse, a fee of some sort would be necessary and a limit on how many times you can change it. But I'd really love to see this happen. /signed

give us the possibility to use it, then player can choose to change or not.
Maybe add a limit too (like 5 or 10 times for eatch character)

as we've now spent a grand total of £150 on the game now ( or some of us have) it would be nice if anet could give us this small favour .

I'm not too interested in changing the name but in changing my characters looks and all because I really don't want to delete my first character and i don't want to waste all that time i spend playing with it.

I have just one character that I'd probably like to change the name of, and it's my favorite character. I have been complimented about the name because, coincidentally, it's a reference to some TV show character. -I- know, however, that the name was just "inspired" by a noob with a similar name who was shouting in Ascalon, all caps, about his favorite music selection and trying to find conversation about it. Anyway, even though the name isn't bad really, I'd change it to something as good as one of my other characters' names.
Cherrie
My primary character was my first. I didn't really have time to think of a great name, I used my nickname plus the name of an author of the first book I laid my eyes on... and so, Cherrie Rimbaud was born.
I don't like her name as I like my other characters' names, but after 1.5 year of play, much much effort put in her, numerous titles maxed - I wouldn't remake her. I'd even pay to change the name..

Yes please, give us a chance to rename our characters!

as long as they dont charge 10 bucks for every name change like that super greedy blizzard is doing.
and if they do this they have to make that you can only change your name once every 40 days to prevent abuse of it.

All I can say is that this would be great to end my 30 month wait to fix my warrior's name. The "Silverblad" has been bothering me... It's about time for a name change.
I've tried the remaking several times, but I do not want to go through that again.

[...] We cannot change a character name. We can put a flag on an account that then requires a player to do so. Why do we not offer name changing in the game, by request? First, because there are costs involved for us, and having someone set those flags takes time that we'd rather they were investing in more globally-valuable things. Secondly, as Biz points out, there are enormously complex elements involved with a name change having to do with personalized and customized items. When we require a name change, customized items are lost to the player, but that's ok, because that loss is the "cost" of choosing an offensive name in the first place. However, if someone requests a name change, each and every personalized/customized item would need to be flagged, and, again, that's not something we want to have our employees doing, when there are more important things to do. Lastly, changing names at random can open a window for griefers, because they can cause trouble, slip away, change name, and avoid getting caught by name report. I have asked about the possibility of offering a name-change option in Guild Wars 2, and I know we will look into that. However, be aware that other games -- even those with a monthly fee -- charge for this service, and if we offer this option, I am quite sure that we would charge as well. Then it is up to the player if a name change is so important that he is willing to pay the fee, and it also disincents players from doing name changes as part of griefing other players. --Gaile 20:20, 7 October 2007 (UTC) |

donot let the name change grow....its a stupid and useless idea and especially if to add money to it.
Zarathustra
Let the name change grow - it's something that nearly every game should have, especially in an mmo type wherein character creation is an extremely time involving process. Yes I understand it is (and theres no better way to say it) a pain in the ass for GW staff to complete a name change, especially when it would involve also changing all custom equipment - however compared to the time and effort it would take for a player to re-create an old character the task for GW staff seems rather trivial, and were a fee to be implemented for such a feature they would be more then compensated for their effort.
And if you would like to take this a step further, I doubt it would take much work to simply modify the game engine so that when a name is changed all equipment of that customized name also changes. Were this to be done name changes could be completed much easier, for example an autonomous system could be used. You could log into the Guild Wars Store and simply pay for the name change, and next time you were to log in a pop up could appear prompting the name change and once the request was send the name and equipment could be automatically renamed, the process could theoretically be made into a simple variable/memory re-assignment. And of course implementing an autonomous system would completely eradicate the "human element" of this issue technically making the fee for the name change nearly 100% profit. Comments? Suggestions? Please... And if you wish, completely destroy my theory :P...

You should only be able to change your name once to avoid confusion.
If so, I'd love this feature because I am another that suffers from a horrible role playing name: Canadian Fire.

I find this view a little onesided, as there are certain cases where name changes should be applicable. There are characters out there that are reaching 2 and a half years now; to say that one might not mature in 2 and a half years, might become a different person is simply untrue. Say someone started playing when they were 14 and a half, and being the asinine little teenager they were, named their character Xx I Pwn You Xx or some other ridiculous title. They grow on, taking their career through and through until the present; now 17 and still playing GW, they realize how incredibly idiotic and jokeworthy the name was, but don't want to lose a well invested character by remaking. Or take my own case; I am an RPer, and my character recently married in game. Par the custom, I would love to change her last name to that of my husband's, but because of the name limitations, this is not possible. Characters (like people, par the last example) change over time - a name change feature to reflect that would be sublime. If truly necessary, we could put in a large requirement to get that name change, that shows you've got a large and dedicated investment in a particular character. 10k, or 100 skill points, or something of the like. |

The "flag name" thing is bs. Your account number never changes. Whatever name you have is linked to that account. If they don't have a problem with you deleting and recreating multiple pvp characters, there should be no issue, even less of one, to change your name on a character.

Mixed feelings on this one.
On one hand what kyra featherbrow said, I agree with.
On the other hand I also agree with Gaile. The GW team in general should be working globally.
I'm going with a /notsigned. Though they should most definitely implement this in GW2.

If all characters were assigned a code, such as:
<account number>-<character code>
Then names would be bound to these codes, customised items would look to these codes to retrieve character names... Then name changing would be as simple as rebinding a name to that code.
No flagging, no staff involvement, just 10k and the 'Jimmy The Record Keeper [Renamer]' NPC. Name changing would of course be disabled for a month after each change, and name records would be kept in logs for an hour or two after a name change(preventing other people from taking the name and being reported), for reporting, friending, ignoring and guild recruiting purposes.
(This way, when the /report command is used, the code currently bound or in the name log would be sent, not the name, thus avoiding reports would not be a problem.)
Also a nice gold sink.
I'm sorry if this was previously suggested.

Yeah. I think that would be a good idea, so long as the character's original name still came up next to theirs in the friend's panel or something. Also, it shouldn't be easy, so as to prevent abuse.
Oh yes, also a time limit after you've changed it once. More than a month, though. Four to six months, maybe. What, you going to change your name every month? What's the point in that?

Hmmm, I've always been against this idea in the past. I mean, come on people, put a little thought into your name when you pick it. You're gonna be stuck with it for a long time.
However, I wouldn't mind seeing the feature added as a possible source of revenue for A-net. Charge $10 or $15 for a name change. Enough to cover the time and expense of an employee having to manually change the name and all items customized to that name plus a little extra for profit.
