Well having a week plus between updates allows them to test things and avoid massive bugs (see battlefield 2 for rushed updates)

there's a reason it's called an explorable area. the same reason mineral springs exists, I don't believe there's any quests up...

for the first one, go to destiny's gorge, there's a quest there that will lead you to the desert attribute quest.
