I would check the programs list in the zone alarm configuration then, and make sure Gw.exe is listed as having allowed permissions on outbound...

Are you using anything like zone alarm, norton internet security, or other software firewall protection that's blocking Gw.exe from making...

Have you tried just using direct sound, with the other audio options off such as 3D hardware and EAX? Also maybe try updating the drivers?

If your system meets all the recommended specs at least, the only thing that I could imagine causing all the lag is being on a dial-up connection....
