Yeah, get the tats if you want to make a 55. Though, not sure why you'd want to make a 55 seeing as all their farming basically got nerfed.
I think you can still achieve what you could with spirit bond using shield of absorption or something like that. There's a thread on it...
I would assume the number of dye drops you get correlates with what you're doing. Like me for example, I'm really not going to notice this...
