Skill Unlocks in the Guild Wars Store!
Gaile Gray
We'll always be very careful about what we offer. Options will be given that are reasonable and fair, that do not unbalance the game or cause concerns amongst players who do not choose to exercise the option.
We won't offer gold for sale, for instance, or "instant-levels" or other things such as that. I don't imagine you'll see "Uber Items of Deadliness" that cause all others to fall to uselessness. We care too much about balance and about the viability of our game in the short-term and in the long-term to take risks with sales that would unsettle things.
That is why the skills are Prophecies skills only, and why the Prophecies skills were offered at this time. Factions skills will not be on the shelves for some time, meaning that those who have earned them, or are still earning them, need not be concerned about aspects of sales affecting their viability. That is also why this offer is for PvP characters only. By offering in this manner, we preserve accomplishment, and we preserve the value and the integrity of titles.
I see what is being offered as a very good compromise between the request of many different types of players, one that addresses the concerns of both PvE and PvP players. We'll be listening to your thoughts, by all means, and will certainly afford them careful consideration as we move forward with a careful and conservative plan for enlarging the Guild Wars Official Store in ways that are only positive.

I find this worrying, it looks like it is setting the tone for things to come, perhaps as mentioned in this string already unlock all mods, unlock all runes etc in the shop.
Another concern I have is that as you'll all be fully aware there are many players, myself included that use pve characters for pvp (as well as pvp characters). It concerns me because this is not available for pve players also. Which brings me to what I guess is a contradictory concern, is it that absurd that Anet/Ncsoft may choose to add a PvE UAS sometime in the future?
As to those who see this as levelling the playing field for all those new players, yes I guess it can be seen as that and for that point I applaud it, but at the same time wonder how hard it is to unlock these skills. Seven months ago I bought a second account, a PvP only account. I played the premades for a while to gain faction and unlock skills, using those skills I made my own builds and gained lots more faction, allowing me to unlock more skills, runes, mods etc. After three months of PvP play I had all skills unlocked on that account (since Factions I've unlocked all apart from a 9 assassin skills), all runes and all mods. Never played a minute of PvE. Oh yes, I've got a total of seven fame so very little was gained from HA. I'm not in a guild and gained that faction through RA and TA. Is it that hard?
Edited for typo - pve to pvp

First i wanna say i've always been in favor of UAS/UAX(Unlock all skills) but never through means of paying $$$ for them.
I think many jumped to Guild Wars because there was NO MONTHLY fee to begin with when they could have charged one like many of the other MMORPGs.
If it was their main interest to make money they could have started charging a monthly fee right away
>>>>I think thats why so many people love A.NET and Guild Wars is they feel its more about the game than about them making money...This sort of changes that.<<<<<<
They could have sold expansion packs based soley on content and new items, weapons, new armor designs, weapon designs, new landmass, new monsters, new quests and mission etcc but instead they limited what skills were available in each expansion pack to setup what we have here now at the store.

oh. my. goodness.
8 'skills' on the skillbar alone have not ever, do not now, and will not ever be what makes this game great! It how you use em, SKILL in playing will always be more important in a match than uax (but uax is good too). Having these skills instantly unlocked is great for folks with say, a new account after giving up the game and coming back. It will help integrate new players in the pvp community, and give them the opportunity to excell if they have it in themselves. Its not gonna make some idiot such as myself an overnight HA god or anything Heh, I seem to only play ha anymore after getting drunk... think theres a connection in why i never win and dont care?

some people like to play about an hour a day, so faction earning is not a easy thing to do mainly because they have other things.
yo these skill unlocks at first i was a little shocked, mainly because the intial thought of change frightens me, but i have to say after reading into this topic, i think its a great idea.
it is good for people that are still coming into the game or are slow to unlock skills being able to catch up with the rest of us, who quite a few of us are completely unlocked, which means new players who want more skills to compete with can have them at a price, if they don't have the time to unlock them the old way.
this is just to keep new players happy and get more players into the game, which means more green (not that type of Green) for anet.
i can hardly complain.
eternal pho
As many people do, I PVP with my pve characters, even though I've unlocked every single skill for every pvp build lol.
Since most players are pve oriented, I don't think will be a problem.

Totally disgusting. L8r for this game.

I"d surely buy them.
If I wasn't so close to UAX in Chapter 1 anyway :\
ONly one It'd be marginally useful for would be ele, where there are 8 skills I havent unlocked...and I cant justify 10 bucks for 8 skills.
But if i had like 20 skills to unlock, 10 bucks is fair.
As for how "wrong" it is or whatever...Xbox does this type of thing with alot of games now...The Marketplace..."Want this new UBER DAGGER, go to Xbox Live marketplace and BUY the quest to that that dagger for 5 bucks"

More seriously, this is actually pretty nice. Except for the whole paying money for skills thing. This really deepens the rift between PvP and PvE, but it really makes things easier for people (with credit cards) who want to jump into the PvP game.
Good move, ANet.

Think about this:
Nightfall will bring new players who have neither Prophecies skills or Faction skills
It will take them quite a bit of time after purchasing the two preceding chapters to UAX.
What happens further down the road?
Chapter 4 player is new and has to compete vs players with 3 games worth of skills already.
Chapter 5 player is new and has to compete vs players with 4 games worth of skills already.
and so on.
Without this option, it becomes very difficult for newer players to jump into PvP.

One word “Meh,” not bad decision on A-net’s part, though I can see why this would be controversial for those who worked their but off to get these skills. At the same time I think of it this way: those people who do buy into this, are other wise “LAZY” morons who don’t want to work for certain skills; and it untimely boils down to the people who will play Guild Wars part of the time, then the people that truly enjoy the game. This also compares to what Gameshark and Action Replay do for Video games as a whole; cheating does not make you a better player it takes time and practice, to make you a great player.
As long as they don’t start selling killer weapons that wipe everyone off in one blow, it’s all good. Keep the balance and the peace A-net (don't be like WoW).

This doesn't break, unbalance, or ruin anything about this game. Price seems a bit high, but I'm not interested in it anyway myself. If ever they sell anything that provides an advantage that CANNOT be earned otherwise, the PvP part of the game will completley die (Fury anyone?) and I don't think Anet is stupid enough to do that. Somthing that hasn't been brought up though, is the fact that PvE characters STILL have an advantage over PvP only in the competitive environment. Access to daggers that do slashing damage, multiple armor sets, and the ability to have a million weapons to swap to on demand is somthing you currently can't buy, or get without some PvE grind.
On a side note, Vindexus was on Team Reconnects, not Team UaX. I'll be sure to cuss out Squidget and Giggles (of Team UaX) on vent tonight for not letting Vindexus win, and thereby denying us of reconects.

This is bad, they finally start selling something that can be obtained in game with time and effort.

UAX should always have been available.
Sorry for repeating this, but the other thread seems to have died.
If a competetive game is to be fair, all of the players should have access to the same tools.
As it stands, it's like playing Quake 3 only to find you can't pick up the rocket launcher because you haven't spent enough time or money on the game.
This blatant profiteering makes a mockery of the whole idea that GW can be a competetive game.
Oh, and I expected no less from Gaile.
Being an employee, she has to toe the company line and will never be able to say whether she agrees with something or not. Hence no commentary on the criticism of the ridiculous price.
Hell, she probably loves the idea anyway.
More money coming in = more potential for a pay raise.

question:

This is business, and as a business I feel they are being very smart with this, one it will increase sales of the first GW to those who enjoy PvP over RP. Second it will provide Anet with more money as those new players can now purchase all the skills they need to effectivly play in PVP for GW.
Once they capture this, it will also allow for increased sales to the new versions of GW, namely Factions and Nightfall. I believe their intention is that the new players will be hooked with one part of GW and will want to explore the other parts of GW. Great business sense for them, but there will be negative consequences of this, that most players who enjoy RP will be turned off even more to PvP due to the negative players this may attract.
I suppose you just have to take the good with the bad, I mean this is a business, not just a game, and with out money say goodbye to GW.
P.S. Notice how it is just before the HA weekend also, their timing is amazing.

I can see this creating an even bigger separation between the PvE and PvP community, but that's their problem. I really don't see gold and pve items being put on sale in this shop due to making PvE pretty much obsolete and they'd be killing half the game.
PvE chars already have easy access to top of the line armour and weapons just by stepping into the main city. It's the grind that keeps PvE going. Why bother grinding a bunch of gold and ecto to outfit your character with multple weapon and armour skin sets dyed obscure colours to get the perfect setup if you can just log in and make a quick credit card transaction?
The only thing left to do really at that point would be to PvP in which case all it would show is how much money you can spend.
GW has to have grind in PvE but without it interfering in the PvP side. You can get two warriors facing off, one will be a PvP rolled character, the other a fully set up PvE warrior with FoW armour and the most awesome skinned weapons-
Actually I think I went off track and lost my point entirely. I don't even know what my point was, but I don't want to just delete all this typing *click*

The idea isn't bad except for those who grind-farmed faction or gold to buy all the skills (which are so expensive in-game). Personally, I think the prices are too high. The entire skill pack costs £8 ($US13)more than what Prophecies cost in the shop when I bought it a year ago.

great update. I'm glad those people who want this option now have it...
but i do gotta say: Geez that's Spendy! $40??? might as well go buy the game and have some fun with it. Of course this is my opinion, but i'm not affraid to admit that if this reflects the going price for purchasable content then i'll hang onto my dimes, cause there isn't enough of them to get me anything anyway.
if I was to guess what the price for UAS would have been I would've guessed $10 easy.
and after seeing this, i'm glad i bought chapter 1 and spent the little time it took me to unlock my own skills.

Since time is generally inversely correlated to income, this offers another route to UAS for people busy with jobs, kids etc. Guild Wars has always been about fun over grind and if anything this is one of the bigger steps I have seen towards that ideal. I only see complaints from people who seem to think achieving UAS the traditional way is somehow a status symbol of superiority. Well, if these people were achieving UAS for that purpose as opposed to simply having a larger skill choice when it comes to PVP, they are most certainly playing the wrong game. PVE is always going to take time, due to the nature of the beast. This development seems to me to offer instant PVP fun regardless of the lifestyle of the player. I fail to see how this could possibly be misconstrued as a bad thing.
Vicviper101
I think that if say, chapter 9 had just come out, and I'm really big into PvP, and the only two skills I wanted to perfectly go with a set of possible builds were Spiteful Spirit and Lifetransfer, I might not want to go back and play chapter 1, much less buy it. Even though 9.99 is a somewhat significant amount of money, if it got me everything I wanted, and only what I wanted, I'd be fine with that.
Just my two cents.
P.S. Even though $39.99 seems like a lot of money, more people would complain if they didn't offer it, since they would essentially have to pay $59.94 to get all 6 individually.

Ok, first off, I have to note just how hypocritical Anet really is. I remember a while ago a UAS button was the topic of hot debate.
Anet sent their messenger (Gaile) to preach to us all about how horrible a UAS button would be and how it would somehow ruin the game... But when money comes into question, Anet <3's UAS and UAS is a great opportunity! Long live selling out!
And speaking of money... 40 dollars? Please... I can't see very many people in their right mind actually paying that when they could get a full game for the same price. I know it's supposedly optional and all, but that doesn't change the fact that it's obviously a ripoff.

I think this saves money for PvP-only players or people who only play the game for PvP and want to stay competitive. Instead of buying future chapters for a full $50 and then grind all the skills for PvP through PvE, they can buy the skill packs for less (although, I do hope they can lower the price a bit more for a whole chapter pack) and have to own only just ONE chapter.
At first, I thought this was a horrifying idea but you have to look beyond the price and what's offered. Although I can't say the same for the price, I think it's a good idea.
As for people exaggerating about what's to come in the online store (i.e. 0/|/|3g4 rUn3 0f \/1g0rz0r +150H.PEE), get real.
Edit: I think they should have also included mod and rune unlocks with the whole chapter pack for that steep price.

What about the PvE side of things. Long time PvErs get nice titles like Grandmaster Cartographer or Kind Of A Big Deal. Let people buy these new titles so they can "catch up"
I mean in the end, its just more money for ANet. And as far as I'm concerned that seems to be ANet's priorty right now. What about all the lag and err7s ppl are getting? The unbalanced skills? Forget that, lets add something so that ANet can make more money! That being said I guess you can't blame them. ANet isn't a charity, they're a company out to make money.
P.S - I apologize for raging at you in this post, Gaile. I realize pretty much all these changes are out of your controll. You have a difficult job. I'm just pissed about this change so I rage here. Don't take it personally

these players arent suddenly going to have the year and a half+ experience that veterans who already have these skills anyway will have, it will simply allow them to be able to play more structured roles in pvp, allowing new blood to almost smoothly slot into the current pvp'ing community without being given a 400+ hour 'grace period' in which they have to pwn charr and mursaat.

People can't get faction and unlock skills from chapters they don't have. I don't see all that many people buying unlocks for chapters they already have.
