Asking to have your characters imported is selfish. Basically, you are saying to A-Net, "I'm a valued customer so I should be treated differently than everyone else." This is wrong. Everyone should be treated the same and be given equal opportunities. Imagine this scenario: You are in a store buying a product which will require a major investment. This investment could be time, money, labor, or a combination of the three. As you're waiting in line you notice the person ahead of you is also buying this same product. As this person approaches the cashier he/she says, "Since I've spent so much money here in the past I should get a discount, right? Oh, and can you put this together and call me when it's ready?" Imagine how you would feel when they comply to his request yet still charge you in full. Unfair? Unjust? This person probably hasn't spent any more than a regular customer in a given timeframe, however he coerces them with a slefish tactic to get ahead. And, no, he didn't have a discount card.

Many games require lots of time and effort to succeed. Final Fantasy, Everquest, Asheron's Call, Lineage, Phantasy Star, etc, etc. It takes a long time in Final Fantasy to level all your characters to 99. However, with every new game you start over at level one. Why should Guild Wars be any different? Why should any game with a completely different timeline or world allow this? The entire concept is absurd. It may seem like a reasonable tactic to keep customers happy, but all it will accomplish is alienating one player base from another.
*Edit* Besides, why would A-Net trash GW1 when GW2 is released? I doubt they would make such a poor business decision.
