Poll: Should GW1 characters be able to cross over to the GW2?
Lord Bishop Stone
I hope we can transfer, that will be the only way I will buy GW2. I know that is set for at least a 100 years in the future but there is much that they can do for the import, I mean we have all sorts of realms who says that time in one realm is the same in all, we could go into another realm like FOW, UW and DoA etc... our chars could spend a week there only to come out a 100 years later. So it could be possible to import our chars a 100 years ahead.
LifeInfusion
Big whoop, the only thing that matters is what you learned/experienced/enjoyed as a player. Levels, exp, money, fame, rank, unlocks don't matter in the end.
LightningHell
I don't know, some form of our current characters being spiritual heroes instead would be nice.
Lmao Roflus
This whole poll is pointless, seriously. Nothing has been annoucned by Anet at all, just by some obscure website. Even if this was official, Chapter 5 isn't even out yet, let alone Guild Wars 2.
this poll should be killed and then ressed in 2 years plz
But staying on the topic here, not being able to transfer our characters over to the new game would be a slap in the face to true fans. All that time and dedication through the thick and thin of this game, only to be stranded within the "lessar" Guild Wars for all eternity? It's like dedicated fans are being treated the same as people who don't even care about this game. Who are the people that would easily just disregard their old characters like they were nothing? I'll tell you who, people who play World of Warcraft instead and yet still lurk in these forums.

Well 1, I don't want the rumor of GW2 to be true, I wanna just keep playing this game because of so much that's been invested.
That said, if it's really a few hundred years later, then what should be carried is some sort of descendant system. What this will most likely mean is that if you had a GW1 account, your characters will probably get some minor item bonus to start with.

This poll utterly shit, very early to start making strategic decisions like this and i'll resurrect this thread if Anet took your words seriously of starting fresh start when everybody whine about why Anet did something like that..
Juicey Shake
if the same skills are being utilized.. and my UAX is not carried over, even more reason to stop playing gw.
doubt i'll make it to gw2 though, anet going downhill fast in keeping player mroale up, at least in my eyes

yeah, 2 years is a long time.....dont know if I will even be playing then, heck I dont even know what I will be doing next month let alone 2 years from now!
But I think that you shouldnt be able to reuse the character names if they are still in play in another gw....even though they would a few hundred years different in age.... just come up with some new names----you have 2 years. start thinking now.

I know you people may think titles and FoW armor may mean something, but they really don't. You get max level and decent enough weapons in a week or two. I don't get what there is *to* carry over but a crapload of janky skills which should be overhauled. 80% of you people complaining now won't care 2 years down the line when you're bored of GW1 anyway from lack of content and will have just about forgotten your characters.
Hopefully they will take this opportunity to rethink some of their not as great fundamental gameplay mechanics, such as hex stacking and the disparities of one-removal-price for varied-priced hexes, prot vs healing, tank skills on warriors, etc.

wipe my money wipe my levels, but let me keep my names and toons and titles! If not i will wave goodbye after playing since the beta in Nov2004 (haven't made up my mind yet, just a first reaction)

when GW2 is finaly released, i want to have a choise.
Take a quest that makes something happen with my char, time traveling or so.
Or that i can start a fresh new game.
but guys... gw2 is planned 2, 3 years from now... don't worry!
arenanet will think of something, i trust them! everything they ever did was great!

After thinking about it more, no. It should be a completely fresh start for everyone, a lot of people would simply be able to import their characters, making them far better than everyone else, then other people would feel they need to import theirs as well just to keep up, and that would alienate even more new players, etc. I also think it would be best for the developers not to have everything carry over, it should be a brand new game, not a rejig of the first one, otherwise it might as well just be an expansion.
I definetely think there should be something special for the players that have been playing since the begining though.

I don't care, I can't exactly get attatched to them.

The key question isn't whether characters can be "imported", but what they bring with them!
GW2 will have improved graphics, so the visual appearance of characters will be more or less different. Is it worth it to convert all the old graphics to the new system just for nostalgia? Also, the game mechanics will be different, so the armor and weapon stats will have to be adapted.
The main thing I would like to transfer to GW2 with my character is the unlocked skills, but I guess they are going to revamp the whole skill system anyway, and will dump all the old skills. With more than 1000 old skills GW1 was already a big monster, and very hard to balance. If they port all those skils over to GW2, plus the ones from the GW:EN expansion, plus the skills from GW2 and future GW2 campaigns, Izzy will have one hell of a job in GW2.
What else is there? Titles? Most titles are bound to GW1 game mechanics, and make little sense in GW2.
Overall, I prefer a fresh start, with everything wiped clean. If anything, only the character names should be reserved.

Where as I would love to take my character accross to the new game. It doesnt really make sense to do that in my view.
If GuildWars 2 is set a long time after GWs1, then how they can just casually transend from one to the other.
Plus if the graphics are being sooped up for GWs2. They would need to re-model every GW1 skin, weapon, dye colour, and models to work in the new game engine.
So basically rebuilding GWs1 in GWs2. Thats alot of work and I wouldnt say its justified.
Its basically a whole new game, and it should all be started afresh. It would also remove any advantage which high-level players would have ingame.
I think everyone should start a new-slate and have no advantage over anyone else, until a few months in.

The most I'd want to see with regard to character importing to Guild Wars 2 would be for names to be reserved for a certain period of time, say a month after the games release and possibly some small bonus ranging from a few extra skill points to a bonus weapon appropriate to the new class.
BlackSephir
I don't NEED my chars to play GW 2 but it would be extremally nice if I could play with em
Tiny Killer
I voted to keep my names. New game=fresh start, but I would like to keep my names.
Meat Axe
Well, I will play regardless of what happens (unless they introduce monthly fees, which isn't likely). I mean, I do love my characters, and have spent time on them, but sometimes you do need a new beginning. I don't care about names being reserved (I really don't think they'll do this anyway, since some players won't even move on to GW2, and also storing millions of names for the possibility that players will want them is just not a logical thing to do). I make all my names up. I don't base them off anything. So my names are completely orginal, and the only way they will have been taken is if someone has seen me in game, thought "Hey that's an awesome name" and got into the new game before me and stole it. But come on, how likely is that?
I wouldn't mind something to remember my characters by though. A little personal hall of fame or something. But like I said, I will play regardless. I play the game because I enjoy it, not because I've become attached to some small pieces of data (Although I have to some extent).

I don't care about GW2. But, will GW1 servers go down on the release of GW2? If yes, then /ragequit

GW characters must be able to play GW2 and GW2 characters must be able to play the original. It's absolutely a must imo, or i can just as well delete all my characters right now because they will be out of things to do in the near future.
I didn't pimp out all those heroes just to see them rendered useles for future campaingns. Unacceptible!

Yes, I cant go on without them ^_^

I think before everyone gets all riled up about not being able to import a character, they should all just wait until we actually get some more solid information about how the game is going to work.

But you have time, GW2 will probably appear in 2010 (near future ?) or something like that and it will be a new game. What the need to keep your "luxon's friend title" if there is no alliance battle ? or if there is no title ?! and if there are other skills, new mecanics, new build system, ...
Is it possible to transfer a lineage 1 char in lineage 2 server ? I don't think, the two games seem very different. But lineage 1 is still running...

We don't have yet an official statement from Arena Net, all we a re doing is speculating
I vote for a fresh start, after all it's a new game. From what i read, the action will take place a few 100 years in the future... Your characters will be bones and dust by then.... unless you time travel
Now, to be more realistic.... GW has now zounds of skills, armors, weapons, etc. To transfer all that in GW2 (who will have a new engine) will be kinda hard.
I prefer to be a KOBD in GW1 and a noobie in GW2....

But there's no concrete facts yet. We don't even know if there's gonna be a GW2 (there will be one at some point in the future, but as soon as 2010? We just don't know yet)

They should just continue to upgrade the GW engine further, step by step.

Its very divided for me,
One hand there the thrill of a new beginning, no money transfer, no assistance.
But im "attached" to at least two of my older characters, and having gone through so much work just to find out i can only do the old stuff again?
Not Cool.
I'm leaning towards "allow importing".

Dont keep saying that they cannot 'import' a character from 200/300 years ago ............... this is a fantasy world, anything can happen. Your character 'dies all the time' so a 200/300 year old gap means nothing.
Other games let you import your character from an older version, so why should'nt GW2 be any different?
The Poll above says that most players want the option.

I'd like some reason to care about PvE again. Fresh start!
Debating whether option one or two is my choice... I'd keep my names as much as possible, but being able to log in and ninja something like Legendary Dryder has too much humor potential.

When i bought guildwars it was because I read that i would be able to import my characters into upcoming chapters...Why would that change? What is all this GW2 stuff anyway?

/ absolutely there should be migration !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I AM a PvE player. I tried PvP but it just didn't work for me. Since there was no more quests to be done, I decided to start gathering titles. I have a lot of meaningful ones (like all 3 GMCs). So for me loosing them is destroing everything I have achieved in game. It's like ArenaNet would say: we don't like the guild Ranks and player fame... lets remove it completely. Titles for PvE players are the only "recognition" of sweat and tears invested in the game. Also PvP only player doesn't know a pain of spending ages in FoW trying to get all materials for that one and only FoW armor.
I understand that there are people who didn't care, didn't have time or simply were too lazy to get some of the titles. Those people tends to buy gold for real money on ebay, spend it on Red Bean Cakes and after that they are still getting to first title only, because they would have to doubleclick for more than 20 minutes.
Those people out of pure envy say "Lets make it even. I don't have those titles, so he shouldn't either". Give me a break. Fresh start, so the everyone has the same chances? It is not Communism! If there are loyal players who were playing from the start, they shouldn't be robbed of their achievements.
It is not like they will have unfair advantage. After all everyone is lvl 20 tops !
If the Anet will not give option for migrating characters, then I probably will not bother with GW anymore. I would really apreciate some comment from PR department. If there won't be such posibility, I will rage quit immediately.

"I will play regardless of import options"
If they allow us to cross over, great
If not, great
Whatever the case might be, it doesn't affect me playing GW2 in any way

Here's a simple compromise - allow players to take their characters' names and titles to GW2, but no skills, armor, items or money.
That way there is "evidence" of all of the hard work you put into your characters, but no material tangible items that would give you a leg up on other players.

I'd like to take everything over; characters, items, etc. Finding a way for this to happen should be quite easy from a fantasy lore standpoint. Time travel shouldn't be that big a deal.
Now, for those who want a fresh start, well... You always have the option of not bringing your characters over.
As usual, it's all about having options.
