Poll: Should GW1 characters be able to cross over to the GW2?
Buster
I can't recall a MMO allowing old charcters into a brand new game. It wouldn't make any sense. New game, new characters, new everything and a fresh start. Until then I will keep on enjoying the professions I have now.

I think alot of the people wanting to be able to transfer characters, think that they will walk into the GW2 as strong and as well outfitted as they are now, in GW1. Trouble is, more than likely their characters will walk in "naked" as it were. They will have the lowest weapons, armor etc. Otherwise why would GW bother to make a new game if all the inherent issues from GW1 were carried over. Makes no sense. IF the people wanting to be able to transfer want to use their existing characters as place holders so their name is secured, then that is another issue to be addressed. If they wait say, one month to move over, how would the game know to hold that characters name? It would require gw doing a mass import of all active accounts. This would be a logistical nightmare.

I have voted for character transfer, because i already gave out more then 250 euro's on Guild Wars (Collectors Editions and pre release packs) and i would be very pissed and sad if i coudnt use my ole char in the new game.
I am very addicted and have spend a lot of time creating the characters as they are now, it would be a waste not to allow transfers.

i like all my characters and have spent a lot of time getting them nice weapons and armor. yet I have to say no... GW 2 is a new game.

I voted the last option. I'll miss 'em if they go, and it makes me less inclined to grind out those titles.. but if they gotta go, so be it.
Though I'd like to be able to reserve my main toon's name. She can at least be a descendent of my current one...

I want to keep my character name, obsidian armour, all my gold, plats, ectos, Weapon (<3 my zodiac longbow), titles and mini pets.
I don't mind losing my levels and exp.
If i wanted to have a baby irl i wouldn't have one if i expected it to be taken off me within 2 years, no point.
If i cannot bring across my characters i WILL leave, i bet all my gold, weapons, etc on that because i won't need them when i'm playing a new game with a different company.

You bring up a good point about the armor, what if the new armor system is totally different from the original GW. There are so many possibilities, as I said before let’s just wait and see how things pan out.

DONT forget that GW 2 is just a romor
lucifer_uk
Rumour or not... it does raise the point of what will happen to our GW characters if/when they consider moving guild wars in a new direction.

I'm torn on this one myself.
My first response was, "Lost my characters? My babies! Oh noes!"
But the more I think about it, the more I think a fresh start would be better - and more exciting! - for me.
If we could take characters across, I'd be okay with them losing stats, items, whatever. Though it would feel like a huge waste of so much time and effort, at the same time keeping all those things would require... well... a similar game engine... and a huge change is exciting too - so if I couldn't keep those things, that's okay.
So that would leave the ability to take characters across as just for character appearance.
But, what about graphical changes? What if the same hair and faces aren't available, or look different?
Then my characters wouldn't be my characters anymore...
There are just too many unknowns to say, really, I think...
I'd miss my characters, I'd lament the time invested in them - sure. But in the end, it will have been fun for however long it lasted, and a complete fresh start would still be refreshing and exciting.
So... last vote option for me

losing all of the titles, the faction cap, the unlocks.. for a game with non-human races.. taking too much a step towards pve for me, and losing all the progress I have made.. I will not buy GW2 regardless, but being able to cross over may encourage me to buy it.

GW2? What are you guys talking about lol? A bit soon to be speculating about this, isn't it? =P
Anyway, I can't wait for ch 4 XD

No, no and no. If you are dumb enough to waste significant amounts of time into a game or a character, you shouldn't earn any reward for it. It would just be wrong. Fresh start, or they will never learn.
Redfeather1975
When Everquest 2 came out they didn't offer people to move their characters over. It's because they are 2 different games. EQ didn't become obsolete when EQ2 came out. Many people still play both games to this day because they are 2 very different games.
I don't know why people think a GW2 would be the same as GW with just extra content. That's not why they'd make a GW2. They'd make a GW2 to be a very different game. And I bet you that people will still be playing GW and having fun after GW2 comes out.
2 very different games. Same universe. That's about it. If you'd think GW2 could import GW characters than you are mistaking the game for an expansion, which it won't be. Because there's no reason to make a new game only to expand content/story on an existing one.

I would be annoyed if in GW2 chars didn't roll over... If they didn't I'd just PvP with my mates. No PvE at all.

Lets not be selfish.
Allow the option to move characters across in some form.
Those of you begging for a fresh start and new character can create one, those of us that don't want to lose our identity in the game can move our characters across.

lol @ selfish............nobody would want to play a new game if other people were running around with titles and ectos and good stuff the first day..Ever notice how it wasnt quite as fun bringing your second character out of pre? How much of a shame that would be to have that on a whole new game..

Yay to Jeremy. How is it not selfish bringing over your decked-out FoW armored dude to a brand new game with a new player base, engine, and content?
Red summed up much of what I've said already. It will be a new game. If they were able to transfer characters, then Guild Wars 2 will probably suck because it has much of the previous game with content equivilent to that of just another GW1 campaign (with better graphics. Oh boy).
Ok imagine this: Guild Wars 2 comes out. Let's assume that you can character transfer. Your favorite character is a monk with all skills, all high-end armor, and maxed out weapons. How would that be fun? All that you'll be able to do is just cap skills, get newer armor and weapons, and explore a continent. Just like a new campaign, not a new game. It would be the same-old, same-old.
ANet probably made all of these time sinks for a reason, too: They probably won't release a sequal for a looooooong time, so don't worry. By the time the sequal comes out, you will be bored as hell from Guild Wars.
Also, I've seen noone post a real reason why there should be character transfer.

I think you will notice I said don't be selfish and allow the identity of the character come across in some form for those that want it. Whether that be in the form of the name, titles, etc i don't know.
Agree maybe not allowing ectos, plats and gold etc across. But I want my identity to be in the new game. The things that separate all of us from each other and especially the new GW2 people who didn't invest in the original GW games.

I would like to see, as an idea, that festival hats and mini pets be able to be carried over since they will not affect actual game play and are there for mere cosmetic or entertainment reasons.
I can say that I WANT to bring over my char and thier identities and have them be able to be used in some fashion in GW2. However, there are many examples out there show the opposite trend. If you want to play the new game, start over.
The compromise to this is to be able to bring your char name (so you have it reserved for you), maybe a recognition type of title that reflects you have been playing previous GW installments, (IMO) mini pets and festival hats, and nothing else. Starting new with everything like everyone else in regards to money, weapons, armors, and game titles.
The reality of the matter though, lucifer_uk is that whenever and however GW2 is made, it will most likely be a separate game and everything here in GW1 and its expansion packs will be different and not compatible with GW2 and its expansions. The most we can do right now is wait and be patient, or wait and petition while hoping for the best.

If you're worried about identity theft, I'm more than positive you'll be safe. If you find your name taken, I will come to your house and have you run me over with a car.
Why shouldn't you worry? Because for one, by the evident majority of this thread, it would be far too soon to even think of a sequel. People have indeed spent too much time on this game already, and to have it be "a waste" - meaning shutdown of Guild Wars' servers - is just completely out of the question. They'll lose more players than newer ones gained.
ANet will make the smart move and wait faaaaar into the future before releasing it. By that time, be it 3 to 5 to 10 years, people will be bored, and no one will care. No one will remember your name, and you won't have to sign a petition (seriously???) to keep them safe. The odds of someone taking them are slim.
God damn that Inquirer article...I'm sure it was that guy's plan all along, to get people to worry about the unlikely - or the "unlikely coming too soon" (didn't know how else to put that).
EDIT: Oh shit, just saw Inde's post...

Tricky question for me. Also, it depends when will it be realeased, I hope it may be like 2-3 yrs. Also I may not even want to play GW anymore because I got more important things to do or something better came up.
One side, I would like to bring my old characters in GW2, not because Im attached, but because I worked so much on them. I would be happy if GW2 didnt let me keep my characters, but let me keep my work or some of it (weps, gold, material)
The other side is that, it is a new GW. Depending on how far it is from the GW1 it should be a seperate game. This would make everyone a newb and equal at the start.

i'd be real surprised if there were a GW2. i think ANet will continue to upgrade what they have. look at WoW. do you think there's going to be a WoW2 in the near future? think about it. why would ANet risk their current fan base with something totally new?
i really wouldnt sweat this. GW2 if it is a reality is a looooong ways off. get real peeps.

Reading this thread thread makes me laugh at the bunch of dreamers.
How do you think ANET will be able to port over 9 PvE toons (asumming you have all three chapters) into GW 2 without causing unbalance or problems in the new Game platform. How many slot do you think they will allow you to play in the new game along with the option of races.
Comon pples, get real. The only possible thing they might do is perhaps let you activate some special ingame item in GW2 with your existing GW chapter serial keys for supporting GW 1 perhaps and thats even assuming if the dev can/want to do it.

No.... because ebay'ed fow armors are gone hrhr
=HT=Ingram
I would be OK with an IMPORT of characters into the GW2 world, as long as its just the basics... unlocks and name, ect. but if it is going to be a whole new game it should NOT allow gold or uncustomized items to transfer. And it should be a 1 time thing. No going back and forth.
After talking to several people in the know however, I highly doubt GW2 will be out any time soon. Their focus is still on new chapters for GW existing servers... Which means no lev cap increase or attrib increase. and that's fine by me and I'm sure millions of others that want the existing chapters not to loose their validity...

Seriously though, I'd like some sort of feature in GW2 to say "Hey, this person was a loyal player of GW1". Nothing game-breaking or unbalancing, mind you. Just something to show the level of dedication the veterans have put into the series.
Though personally, it doesn't matter. I'm not going to be a player of that game... It's back to /coughWoW/cough for me.

There was something very unique about the GW experience from the beginning. Things that I breeze through now were a total struggle at one point. The impossibility of THK to now being able to do it with henchies easily and with heroes it is almost laughable.
There was a sense of newness the first time through, and I want that back, and to have everyone else starting off without the advantages of having run a half dozen characters through the game.
I vote for level playing field.

If I can't share GW 2 with my old characters, that I worked a lot of time on, screw that. I wouldn't even bother GW 2. I have a life. LOL. Sorry, but GW 2 would be good for players with no lives.
Phantom Flux
Most of the players who are demanding not to transfer armor and gold into GW2 are really the types that get jealous of players for being rich and being able to spend on ascended armor. That's all. They feel by doing this they wouldn't feel left behind. Oh get real people, no one wants to waste time with your game shamoos.
Kula
It's too bad when people have to incorporate the "have no lives" remark in their argument. I don't play GW much, if at all, anymore but not because I have or don't have a life, I just choose not to. Sounds like someone is projecting some misdirected anger towards other players.

Transporting chars would be a pretty dumb idea that would kill the gameplay. If you guys wanna get bored with GW2 sooner then i can understand that, if you're looking forward to it because it'll be new - think a little.
MirageMaster
thats your opinion, look at how many want their characters and stuff there! if i cant have my stuff there then i have no need to buy this so called new game.Whos gonna be more hurt,Anet or me?The very list i would except is,look transfer, name transfer, skill points transfer,xp transfer and money transfer.heck with items.Or at least make new stuff better so it wouldnt worth to keep the old stuff.

I like the idea of being able to transfer a character or two, but it have to be just looks and name.

Has no one concidered that if GWs 2 is a good few hundred years into the future, how could our characters possibly still be alive?
Amor, weapons, cultures would have all changed and improved (I assume).
Are we going to travel to the mists and pull them back out into the future?
So you had a life while you were leveling up your characters in GW1?
I have 3 lvl20 characters, all in ascended armor, max weapons and alot of gold to go around.
Yet I Obviously dont think its a good idea to transfere characters.
If you go by the attitude of posters like Phantom Flux, who is probably one of those 50%, then I wouldnt put much stock in the other 49%.
Look at the situation with school dinners in the UK. Their trying to make kids eat healthy food, but the parents are complaining and passing their kids burgers and chips through the railings of the gates!
And you're trying to say that people always know whats best for themselves!!!
Just to add my own, unsubstantiated statement;
Most players who want to transfer their characters want it purely out of vanity. They want to start the new game and be able to run up to newbies and dance in their FOW or 15k armor to look good.
If they were true MMO/RPG players, they would look forward to the challenge of starting a whole new game.
If they were truely experienced players, they would fly through the name game and reach the elite levels in a very short time.
The fact is that GW2 is going to be a completely new game. Its not an expansion, its not a new continent. Its a whole new, different game.
This is like asking Anet to transfer your character to Blizzards database so you can play you lvl20 elemental in Azeroth. Then winging when they laugh at you.
The entire system and game will be different. The interface will probably be similar, but the graphics, physics engine, textures and models will be new and work differently.
