I hope we can transfer, that will be the only way I will buy GW2. I know that is set for at least a 100 years in the future but there is much that they can do for the import, I mean we have all sorts of realms who says that time in one realm is the same in all, we could go into another realm like FOW, UW and DoA etc... our chars could spend a week there only to come out a 100 years later. So it could be possible to import our chars a 100 years ahead.
Poll: Should GW1 characters be able to cross over to the GW2?
10 pages • Page 7

This whole poll is pointless, seriously. Nothing has been annoucned by Anet at all, just by some obscure website. Even if this was official, Chapter 5 isn't even out yet, let alone Guild Wars 2.
this poll should be killed and then ressed in 2 years plz
But staying on the topic here, not being able to transfer our characters over to the new game would be a slap in the face to true fans. All that time and dedication through the thick and thin of this game, only to be stranded within the "lessar" Guild Wars for all eternity? It's like dedicated fans are being treated the same as people who don't even care about this game. Who are the people that would easily just disregard their old characters like they were nothing? I'll tell you who, people who play World of Warcraft instead and yet still lurk in these forums.

Well 1, I don't want the rumor of GW2 to be true, I wanna just keep playing this game because of so much that's been invested.
That said, if it's really a few hundred years later, then what should be carried is some sort of descendant system. What this will most likely mean is that if you had a GW1 account, your characters will probably get some minor item bonus to start with.

yeah, 2 years is a long time.....dont know if I will even be playing then, heck I dont even know what I will be doing next month let alone 2 years from now!
But I think that you shouldnt be able to reuse the character names if they are still in play in another gw....even though they would a few hundred years different in age.... just come up with some new names----you have 2 years. start thinking now.

I know you people may think titles and FoW armor may mean something, but they really don't. You get max level and decent enough weapons in a week or two. I don't get what there is *to* carry over but a crapload of janky skills which should be overhauled. 80% of you people complaining now won't care 2 years down the line when you're bored of GW1 anyway from lack of content and will have just about forgotten your characters.
Hopefully they will take this opportunity to rethink some of their not as great fundamental gameplay mechanics, such as hex stacking and the disparities of one-removal-price for varied-priced hexes, prot vs healing, tank skills on warriors, etc.

when GW2 is finaly released, i want to have a choise.
Take a quest that makes something happen with my char, time traveling or so.
Or that i can start a fresh new game.
but guys... gw2 is planned 2, 3 years from now... don't worry!
arenanet will think of something, i trust them! everything they ever did was great!

After thinking about it more, no. It should be a completely fresh start for everyone, a lot of people would simply be able to import their characters, making them far better than everyone else, then other people would feel they need to import theirs as well just to keep up, and that would alienate even more new players, etc. I also think it would be best for the developers not to have everything carry over, it should be a brand new game, not a rejig of the first one, otherwise it might as well just be an expansion.
I definetely think there should be something special for the players that have been playing since the begining though.

The key question isn't whether characters can be "imported", but what they bring with them!
GW2 will have improved graphics, so the visual appearance of characters will be more or less different. Is it worth it to convert all the old graphics to the new system just for nostalgia? Also, the game mechanics will be different, so the armor and weapon stats will have to be adapted.
The main thing I would like to transfer to GW2 with my character is the unlocked skills, but I guess they are going to revamp the whole skill system anyway, and will dump all the old skills. With more than 1000 old skills GW1 was already a big monster, and very hard to balance. If they port all those skils over to GW2, plus the ones from the GW:EN expansion, plus the skills from GW2 and future GW2 campaigns, Izzy will have one hell of a job in GW2.
What else is there? Titles? Most titles are bound to GW1 game mechanics, and make little sense in GW2.
Overall, I prefer a fresh start, with everything wiped clean. If anything, only the character names should be reserved.

Where as I would love to take my character accross to the new game. It doesnt really make sense to do that in my view.
If GuildWars 2 is set a long time after GWs1, then how they can just casually transend from one to the other.
Plus if the graphics are being sooped up for GWs2. They would need to re-model every GW1 skin, weapon, dye colour, and models to work in the new game engine.
So basically rebuilding GWs1 in GWs2. Thats alot of work and I wouldnt say its justified.
Its basically a whole new game, and it should all be started afresh. It would also remove any advantage which high-level players would have ingame.
I think everyone should start a new-slate and have no advantage over anyone else, until a few months in.

Well, I will play regardless of what happens (unless they introduce monthly fees, which isn't likely). I mean, I do love my characters, and have spent time on them, but sometimes you do need a new beginning. I don't care about names being reserved (I really don't think they'll do this anyway, since some players won't even move on to GW2, and also storing millions of names for the possibility that players will want them is just not a logical thing to do). I make all my names up. I don't base them off anything. So my names are completely orginal, and the only way they will have been taken is if someone has seen me in game, thought "Hey that's an awesome name" and got into the new game before me and stole it. But come on, how likely is that?
I wouldn't mind something to remember my characters by though. A little personal hall of fame or something. But like I said, I will play regardless. I play the game because I enjoy it, not because I've become attached to some small pieces of data (Although I have to some extent).
