Closed beta is so much more manageable. With open beta, you would have so many players, and so many whiners, and so many retards. And I've seen in the past too many times where certain features are wrongly "balanced" in betas where the retards begged and whined for a fix and they got what they wanted just so they could shut up.

And discount meaning not $25, like maybe $10. I didn't get a discount to see a sequel of a movie because it only costs around <$10, not $50-$60 (by 2008 prices will probably have to be matched up with Xbox 360 and ps3 so $60 could be the price). Also all the other games you mentioned have sort of an ending to them already, which means that you would not be playing them for a longer time than you would be playing gw.

Of course, probably a free part or open beta would come with GW2 later.

If you link a Guild Wars 2 character to a Guild Wars character, the GW2 character will inherit the GW character’s accomplishments, as recorded in your Hall of Monuments. The Hall of Monuments, available through Guild Wars: Eye of the North, will provide access to unique companions, equipment, miniatures, titles, etc. that can’t be obtained any other way in GW2.

I like the whole idea of building a "family history" for my characters in The Hall of Monuments. With the timespan between Guild Wars: Eye of the North and Guild Wars 2, the whole idea that other players have suggested--passing things (even names) down "through the family" and so forth--is cool!

/happydance

Okay I'm officially looking forward to GW2

How much more info do you want? I know more about GW:EN then I want to, honestly (I like being surprised), and I haven't even read the magazine yet!

But, to give a non-snarky answer, we'll probably get even more info closer to release. It's not due until the end of 2007.

I'm getting slightly more hope, if only because I finally realize we have 2 years to put player input into the game and potentially save it.

ANET has been good in the past about incorporating what players like and dislike. I'm only hoping that, as the philosophy was, grind will *not* award players a competative advantage.

I think that the new additions should be cosmetic, or serve to offer a miniscule ability that, if I so choose not to be involved in, would not reduce the effectiveness of my character in a battle.

The UAX PvP has me somewhat excited. Unfortuantely, the new PvP types they've mentioned seem somewhat lackluster to me. Big PvEvP battles and some GvG it looks like. I'm hoping they retain the 'Battle Isles' Idea and allow for RA, TA, etc to continue. (considering it's in the same world...maybe HA will still exist. I am at least hoping that ToA and other pivitol places in the game will resurface).

What I'm saying is, I'm hoping that with community help ANET will be able to incorporate these new features in a true way to Supplement what we already have, but maintain the integrity of the "Skill over Time (or grind...)" mantra.

I, for one, really hope the term "equipment" includes armor and weapons. I'd love it if my GW2 characters could suit up in great-great-grandpa/grandma's fow armors and wield their weapons!

No cash, I doubt armor, but weapons yes. Although the character would probably look different. Would it be possible to link a Charr character to your Guild Wars character?

Man, all these people think there smart with their "WoW didnt invent MMO's".. i havent seen anyone say that? The reason its compared is because WoW is GW's leading competitor, and the most recent popular MMO other than GW, so GW is turnign more into its competetor to gain the players form it and such. But the main thing is, there going absoultely against everything they stood for when they released GW. They have totally changed there perspective to $$$ and not their current audience.

I'm getting confused, reading from earlier posts, peoples are saying you can merge characters from GW 1 to GW 2. But later posts have peoples saying both are separate meaning you have to start off with new characters in GW 2.

Transferring armor has me worried, the same way transferring titles does. It's a sure way to have elitism right from the start.

I am glad to know the majority of people on this thread are on the same page. It's a good thing we get to keep out names, but GW 2 is gonna go for some bad sales. GW 2 is gonna let us know that our days and work we put into GW1 will go as a sham.

What's so special about the Hall of Monuments? Please! Not buying it. GW2 is gonna be nothing but a sad and generic WOW-clone. I laugh at the one post that's been brown nosing as if that person thinks Anet is gonna cut him a deal if doing so. Please! The majority has spoken. No migration? just extra wastes of times? Oh boy, wait til Anet waits in a few years to discover GW 2 will probably get the worse review, along terrible sales.

This crossed my mind, too.

Part of me says "Why not?" Like, your Charr Shaman (or whatever) is a spiritual descendent of your Elementalist...

But the Role-playing purist in me says, No way. That doesn't make any sense.

The more I think about it, maybe only the skins on equipment (weapons? armor?) will be transferable. I mean, is Anet going to keep the same attributes, reqs, items, damage range, etc? I think not. This is a great chance to rebuild everything from scratch, something they cannot do if they are tethered to the same old mechanics.

Just my 2 cents.

Wow, people are complaining about grinding but why do you *have* to be the highest level cant you play under that max and still have fun? On many of my characters i find that i have nothing left to do on them past level 20, i got them perfect stuff all the skills there fun characters yet its sad theres nothing else i can do to improve them i think this new level thing is great just as long as pvp stays fair like it is. you dont HAVE to be the highest level you'll be just fine being low level if you dont wanna grind, we end up doing that anyways when we get greedy and go into farming...

1. Feel free to say what you don't like about GW2. I sure did.

2. Uttering another cliche Wow comparison is in your right but it's old and tired.

3. Just because people have something good to say about ANET does not make them a "brown noser"

4. Less tantrum please. More actual discussion.

why do you keep posting this same thing. stop trolling.

we get you dont like it, now go just cause others arnt upset dont make them idiots, it just means they have a diffrent opinion.

who cares if the majority has spoken? the majority isnt always right. everyone said wind waker would be a turd because it wsnt realistic, but it ended up being one of teh most unique zelda games to date. sometimes its good that developers ignore people, if they listend to everything then most games wouldnt have turnd out as intresting as they did.

sure some things need to be listend to, but one some people need to understand that they cant listen to everything simply because some ideas that may sound good, may not end up being good for the game

No one knows for sure. All Gaile said was that there's access to equipment. Who knows how limited that access will be.

Ok i jus read the new information first I'd like to thank the cretaer of thread very very informative and simple thanks very much. :]

did they cancel the production of gw 2 and start eye of north [is that the name of it?] or mearily stop guild wars 2? I dunno

But the new limitless level cap seems excellent imo. When I start a character it takes like 5 days to reach level 20. After that...nothin much is exciting. There is 4 new races to choose from if I read correctly right? Seems like Anet is really pushin themselves to the max. Is Eye of the North like a completly new world? Or like a new continent?

But anyway this is about as exciting as the release of Guild Wars. Best day of my life. Can't wait!!!

There must be balance here. A level cap that counts (as Gaile seemed to hint at) plus further levels that simply allow for certain things, perhaps weapons have minimal level requirements to use, or armors... yet these particular weapons, aside from the skin, are no different than any other max.

The fact that they'd consider no cap implies that it cannot "mean" something forever.

Edit - add on ---

What if they did this in GW now? Allow numbers to roll past 20 with no "physical" benefits, but say every 50th level (to pull out a number) you gain access to new armor and weapon skins, or possibly a slightly larger means of storage... you'd have "character advancement" beyond level 20 without destroying the soul of the game.

Thoughts?
In the spirit of GW thus far, I really have to guess that unlimited levels are cosmetic only; ANet have never tried to encourage grind. However, I'm still really concerned about levels being cosmetic.

Unlimited levels = rank for PvE.

The rank elitism of pvp is what drives me away from it. People will recruit to high end areas based on level, despite the fact that it makes no difference to skill. Heck I wouldn't mind doing some HA, but since I didn't start playing it from day 1 and don't have one gazillion fame, I can't get a group.

We already have titles in GW to show achievements; level is just a crude way of showing amount played with no links to skills, and a crude way that people will quickly pick up on and start discriminating when they form groups. No one says 'NEED PEEPS FOR URGOZ, ONLY PROTECTORS OF CANTHA APPLY', but i can guarantee that, whether cosmetic or not, level will be seized upon as a method of recruitment.

Also I HIGHLY DOUBT you can use weapons and the like from GW1. These are tradeable items with a market value; since you can't bring gold across, people would put all their money into weapons. The point being it's a new game, so people have to start on a level playing field; have 1000+ pretty max weapons in your storage when you start out just doesn't allow for that. Same goes for armor, everything. I envisage some kind of deal like the /bonus items we've received ingame thus far; already customised and non-tradeable, if indeed they are transferable between games at all.

Okay, so you've pretty muched confirmed that 'inheriting' doesn't not include our gold.

But I have some other questions:

Will the titles in GW2 include some (if not all) the GW titles? If so, will he inherit those as well?

Will you still update GW and keep the community going? (Holiday Events, occasional skill rebalances, things like that.)

Will GW2 follow the same campaign structure that GW has followed? Or will you be releasing a GW3 after GW2?

EDIT:

I just remembered that you guys added the title system because of GW's level cap. If GW2 doesn't have a level cap, will their be titles at all?

I, for one, am very happy about the news of the planned Guild Wars 2.

I realize many are not and they are certainly entitled to their opinions. Anytime something you’ve grown fond of changes, emotions come into play, so some negative feelings are to be expected. My view is that the described changes are very welcome, indeed, and reflect that the developers have been listening to the fans.

Firstly, the current model was not sustainable as most of the devoted readers of this forum understand. How many threads were there expressing concern about each chapter stretching the player base thinner and thinner? GW:EN solves that problem by using existing outposts with underground entrances. The expansion will therefore bring new and veteran players back together rather than separate them further. Hard mode does that one better. These kinds of solutions were recommended in Sardalac many times. In fact, there was a great Sorrows Furnace appreciation thread, and this planned expansion looks to be very much in that spirit. The fans have really gotten what they asked for and the cheaper price is icing on the cake.

In GW2, the game will retain those elements that make Guild Wars “Guild Wars,” while amping up the fun factor. Guild Wars is not really about a level cap. It is about constrained skill selection with creative builds and balanced PVP competition. Arena Net has been faithful to these core principles.

If you’re primarily a PVE player, the new GW is great. In GW1, it takes about two days (skilled) to a week (new to the game) to max your character’s level, armor and weapons. If you’ve been playing a significant amount of time (more than 2 months for one character), you’ve done anything you would want to do. What remains is getting titles or rare weapons and armor. For those worried about the new GW becoming a “grind” what do you call farming ecto’s for FOW armor? For a PVE player, it is much more satisfying when your gaming efforts result in tangible improvement to your character and not just cosmetics. The only problem with that is that it can lead to imbalances between dedicated and casual players in PVP.

For serious PVP play, however, any player can instantly create a max level, max weapon, max armor character of his or her choosing. If player competition is your thing, and you hate the grind, the new Guild Wars provides a perfect option. I’m sure we’ll see a rich set of options for serious competitive play. If a fully decked out PVE player starts talking trash to a lower level player, they will always be able to take it to the arena to find out who really has the skills.

Another thing players were worried about was the loss of their characters. For a new game, there’s a trade off between starting fresh and having continuity to the past. I think GW2 is making the perfect tradeoff. Players will start fresh (so new players won’t be intimidated to join), but GW1 veterans will have recognition and props based on their GW1 accomplishments. You can’t please everyone, but this forum suggested idea is a great compromise.

All in all, I’m extremely pleased with what A-Net has proposed. They’ve honestly faced up to the limitations of the groundbreaking model they created, and are taking the true elements of what make Guild Wars a great game into its new incarnation.

I say bravo.

I personally like the way this is going. For me WoW has some advantages and Guild Wars had many advantages. It seems as if Anet is learning from another successful mmo and from what I have experienced, I trust Anet to impliment these features properly.

On a more curious not though, what of map traveling? Cause I don't fancy walking from Augary to LA to sell stuff...

For me, from what I've read I don't like the direction of GW2. Pretty much everything that I liked about GW seems to have been changed.

We obviously don't know anything really very definitely, so it's just a case of waiting and seeing what happens. Though in all honesty, I don't see where there is a massive link between the two, they seem like such completely different games that it seems strange to have this as a follow up to the orignal. If from what these reports suggest are true, and that is the direction the new game will be going in, I don't think I will be getting the game. That's just my gut feeling for now, though a lot of that is not really understanding fully what the new pvp things are going to entail.

It would be very nice if we can go from Gw1 to Gw2 but trough a portal that is hard to get to him
Anet team knows what they are doing.I like this idea about Hall of Monument.
But ppl Gw2 is for 2 years it isn t tommorow realising. So a lot of things can change
And ppl that say that they lost h playing in Gw1 i can say only this:LoL!!!!
I am playing Gw for fun,to social with ppl ecc.
So stop worring and continue to playing Gw1

P.S.maybe the biggest ''problem'' for me is what configuration of Gw2 will be
But as i sayed 2 years.I know that i will buy new computer

Few things to address:

- You won't see level discrimination because levels will not be account wide. If you're lfg with a level 20 warrior, there's no way to tell if you have 2 or 3 level 100 chars. So discriminating against you wouldn't make sense. Rank is account wide.

- Also, please read the first post that mentions the sidekick feature. This looks like a great counter to level discrimination.

- We don't really know how levels will work. But most agree there will be a cap. It's also likely that there will be diminshing returns, like for every 10 levels after 20, you get 5 more HP and 1 more attribute point. If someone wants to grind to 100 for +40 HP and 8 more attribute points, they're welcome to it.

- No kill stealing and spawn camping and other such grindy crap.

- If you think Anet sold out, then welcome to capitalism. You want them to make less money so they can keep you happy? Won't happen, comrade

- It's very likely that Anet is listening to the majority in making their changes. As Loviatar is fond of pointing out, they have data and graphs and whatnot, so they're probably making an educated decision in favor of a greater profit.

- Since GW2 will be a free game, making it appeal to casual gamers will help to keep the load lighter on servers and thus keep the costs down. This isn't going to be the game for WoW fanboys.

- If you've been playing for fun, then the impending demise of GW1 should not bother you. I'm sure the game has provided us with plenty of fun. If you treat a game like work and feel like you "invested" in the game and that is now all going to go to waste... it's time to realize that it is just a game. A very fun and entertaining game, but nevertheless a game.

- I agree that it seems like pvp'ers seem to be getting the short end of the stick with GW:EN and GW2. But if we can't come up with a way for pvp'ers to make up about half of the population (and we couldn't with GW1), they're going to be the minority and will therefore wield less financial clout. The casual pvp'ers will likely still get their jollies.

I would really like to see a way to keep the pvp'ers around as they've contributed a lot to the game as well as to guides, builds, forums, etc. And observer mode is usually entertaining. That's probably my only complaint, even though I'm a casual pvp'er.

Im really sorry for saying this, but I'm pissed off for every person that has said " i hate this game","This is like WoW","WoW clone","Goodbye im leaving"...If you hate it so much why don't you leave?.And if its a waste of life to you then why play? It's a load of Anet's mind of you complaining that you dislike this game. You say its like WoW and its a WoW clone. But GW isn't WoW is it? its a different type of game in a million ways. I for one is buying GW:EotN and GW2 and going to Anet side all the way. You might think i am taking it to far but i dont really care about your opinion about me. As long GW is alive and kicking im staying with GW. GJ Inde with your PC gamer information.
