Well, when the time comes for the real beta, I'd actually like to get in on that. That'd be one way to see if the new game is for me or not. Then again, I'm sure my husband would love for me to stop playing GW altogether, the spoilsport. lol |

Just play GW, play the XP, and watch things develop. I do not think that Anet has dropped the ball yet and I have been playing since the Oct '04 beta event. This game will continue to evolve in new and fantastic ways!

Two years can be long and much can still change. But what is currently announced sounds like GW2 will just be "another mmorpg" on the market plus pvponly character and UAX....and I HATE those and I HATE the UAX-idea.
If this is what gw2 will be, it's shelfware for me. At least leaving will be made easy by it
But again, it's at least two years in the future, everything can change and who can now say for sure that he will still be playing gw in 24+ months?
Looking forward to Lord Brittish's new baby now ^^

Very nice...a fresh start will be great. (Guild Wars 2, that is.)
KillaKarl
so when they say the monument will give GW2 chars our name and accomplishments does that mean all our titles will be transferred?, i see both good and bad in this as i wouldnt want all my partly completed titles transferred as i could never finish them then

I agree that I prefer the unlock system currently in place... except - full unlock packs are offered in the GW online shop now anyway, so if you can get them for no work in the first place, I suppose they ought to be free for all rather than just those who are willing to fork out the extra cash.

The way it reads to me, there will be no transfer of character, items, titles, or gold. All we will have to show for our time in GW is a monument. As I approach the 3,500 hour mark with my main character alone, I can't help but think that if there is to be no character transfer, I have very little intrest in GW2. Very, very disapointed in this aspect. Is it just me? Anyone feel the same? Perhaps a petition for character transfer is in order.
Alpha Moth
but...the character will be different over tehre, so tehy can't do it, just play it liek its a new game

It is *not* just a monument.

I'm actually lovin' the fact that my character gets to use Raziel's Dragon Sword.
Is it safe to assume that no matter what the race, I'll still be able to have Raziel as my ancestor, or something???
And that still leaves my question: "Will there be factions in Guild Wars 2? Meaning, will Charr be the bad guys, and the humans/etc. good?"

Guess I wont know till I try it.

Two thoughts:
1) The World-vs-World PVP idea sounds great! One thing I thought GW was lacking was a way to hop in and out of competitive/PVP play with more than a handful of other players. When you look at some other great competitive online games (not just MMOs) there was always easy access to a server full of other players playing with or against you. I think GW got close with the AB and Aspwenwood, but the wait time in between battles was a serious turn-off. So, yeah... I can't wait to see how this turns out!
2) I really hope that the increased level cap doesn't introduce grind into the game. The cap at 20 is definitely why I'm still playing this game. I would definitely NOT like the idea if it required me to put tons of hours in just to reach a competitive level. The thing about this game that I love is the time I get to spend trying out new skills/strategies instead of going through mindless grinding sessions to increment some numbers (ie. my level).

Nothing moved from the earlier Sim Cities. Civilization 2 didn't have a tie to Civ. MoO 2 wasn't MoO with the same guys. I didn't keep my 10-wheeler from Railroad Tycoon when I started Railroads. You catch my drift? Yes, some of you have played a long time. Dwayna knows I have played Guild Wars a long while, too, and I put time in all those other games, as well. But as the article says, GW 2 offers a whole new world, it's not even the same century, and goodness, I feel that it's ok to start fresh! Yes, I'll miss my characters. But I know that the ones I make in GW2 will be even better. |

Originally Posted by Gaile Gray I'm not sure if it was in this thread that the question was asked, but I did want to share some good news: We do completely understand that you want to keep your character names. After all, character names are a special part of your Guild Wars experience. So you'll be happy to know that yes, your character name will be reserved for you. If you link a Guild Wars 2 character to a Guild Wars character, the GW2 character will inherit the GW character’s accomplishments, as recorded in your Hall of Monuments. The Hall of Monuments, available through Guild Wars: Eye of the North, will provide access to unique companions, equipment, miniatures, titles, etc. that can’t be obtained any other way in GW2. I like the whole idea of building a "family history" for my characters in The Hall of Monuments. With the timespan between Guild Wars: Eye of the North and Guild Wars 2, it's a cool idea to pass things--even names--down "through the family." |
I suppose others might be worried about instant unbalance at the beginning of the game, well, there's a solution to that as well. Make it so there has to be quests to reclaim those items. Quests with requirements. A rite of passage if you will. Make it so that you have to go out and slay a dragon (or something) single-handed and once you're done that you can pull great-great-great-grandma/pa's crystal sword, or dwarven axe out of the stone or throw on their ascended armour and go an use it on your own adventures.
Another way that might prevent abuse is that you can only put in/withdraw items that are customized. Of course, this would prevent shields and off-hands from being transfered, but perhaps those could be customized as well and given some nature of bonus, perhaps a 20% increase in AL or energy. Shipping over the family treasures (perhaps a single Xunlai storage box with a few miscellanious, irreplacable items, materials and gold) would also be nice.
Either way, there are quite a few of us that have invested time and effort into getting items (other's have just ebayed, but meh) and being able to pass down great relics would be very, very cool. If early game inbalance is worrying you, then there are ways around it, two have been suggested above, and with a little thought, I'm sure other, perhaps more elegant solutions could also be found.
I've personally logged nearly 1500 hours over the past 10 months and while I've had many a good time during that period (and a few frustrating ones as well), I do have an investment in my armour, my weapons and my stash of gold. Not losing those things would be an even greater bonus to me.
As for the original item about not being able to port over characters or what-have-you from Diablo to Diablo II, there are a few exceptions. I remember an old game called Wizardry that I used to play many, many, many moons ago. Particularly the 7th chapter. I also played some of the 6th, and intended on playing the 8th, but never had a chance. Even back then, an old DOS game that predated Windows 95, it allowed for the transfer of characters between it's later chapters. You could import them and they would have slightly different story lines.
It's most likely an exception to the rule, but it still is an exception and I'm not even really asking for an exception here. All I'd like is the ability to put some items (armour, weapons, gold, some Red Isis Flowers and Frozen Ectos) into a special kind of storage, removing them from my Guild Wars 1 account and being able to reclaim them with a character named after a revered ancestor of the same class in Guild Wars 2 and only that character. Getting a nice inheritance of 100 plat would also be nice. I wouldn't be opposed to doing a quest chain to prove my worthiness to reclaim them either.

Who ever calls this a WoW clone has no clue what there talking about, because on that logic you could label every other MMORGP out there a WoW clone.
Whats being told now is just prelimanary stuff my guess is, and yes not everyone will like it. Just deal with it, the games not coming out for over 2 years and things are bound to change. Instead of whinning and crying now, join the beta when sign ups occur and vioce your rants their where it will actually matter
Anet has made a fantastic game called guild wars, and I'd expect nothing less of them for Guild Wars 2.

the more I read (and yes I have read all 60 pages ) the more I am not liking gw2......
especially the new movement.....many of the other computer and internet games out there have this different type movement, and well, it makes me physically ill to watch it----gw did this to a point when I first started (and had very little memory in my computer)....if its what I believe it to be then I wont even be able to play the game.
ah well.....guildwars 1 is almost over anyways.....so it wont matter in the long run.
I will play out my characters, get all the titles and armor and then only play on weekends or holidays until the flip the switch on the gw1 servers.....a slow and agonizing death methinks.

I like Shadowbane's idea here I wish Anet would implement this. I have a suggestion. Then the items and weapons of your ancestors will be green and the name of its owner is marked on the said item or weapon. What do you guys think?[/QUOTE]

right, same here, I would just like to see at least some of my armor/weapons transferred and those can be like heirlooms. They can even be given a disadvantage as in not being max with the new system, I would just like them for nostalgia purposes since I took the time to earn them. Also, they can be staggered as in it would take special effort and/or time after the storyline to get them.
Well, while it is iffy on whether or not either will be transferred (although weapon transferred was used as an example) it still presents itself as a problem... Say that you want to save your armor and weapons from your main gw1 char for your heir(s). Well, what about GW1? since it obviously wont go away, then does your gw1 char still have the armor? as in do you have to give it up on your Gw1 char permanently in order to save it for your ancestors?
I truly do hope anet will allow at least weapon/armor transfer. Balance can easily be manipulated by having these items unuseable till a certain point in the game, and if they are customized, then they wont be sellable or mess with the economy at all. It is not a simple process to take all armors/weapons and completely update the graphics for gw2, but i know if anet really wanted to, they would. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the ominous feeling im getting is they dont want to. Also... if they're going to transfer titles and minipets... id think that leaving armor and weapons out of the mix would be a joke. I like what I'm seeing, but I need this to be confirmed before I can honestly say I'll continue w/ gw.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and having materials, ecto, gold, and anything salvageable transfer over would be stupid, as THAT would actually screw up the economy and cause alot of dischord and imbalance, the armor and weapons would be for you only and so would only be for cosmetic and personal value

Alright, this thread has stirred up alot of emotion in me for some reason.
Guild Wars is a great game, and I would call it my favorite within the MMO (gasp, CORPG) genre. I bought the game shortly after it came out, having spent my $50 (which was rare, at the time to have my hands on that much money) to pick up the game in the nearest city (the town I lived in at the time had no games retail).
I got home, installed it, and I would say that within a couple weeks, I had spent easily over 100 hours playing it. Hell, I finished the Galrath quest (when it was still near-impossible) wearing collector armor from pre-Searing!
Now, having a character from the beginnings of Guild Wars is something pretty special, and I think the beta-Players will back me up. It's something that's yours, and you don't want to lose it. I feel that way about my character, sure.
But I also understand that there's no way they could balance a game, and make it enjoyable for new players if all your current armor, weapons, gold and skills carried over. The game would be destabilized from day 1, and that's something that, at the end of the day, none of us want.
I'll be happy with being able to carry over what I can. Hell, something subtle would probably even bring a tear to my eye.
"Why, Reanis! I knew your grandfather when I was a child... He was a good man. You're named after him, you know?"
That, to me, would be more meaningful than carrying over some armor and weapons that would likely be obsolete, anyway. That means that yes, my character is gone. But his history, fighting to save Tyria and Ascalon didn't go unnoticed, and hell, he even survived to live a good life and have children.
The only thing that really concerns me is the level cap. It's a double-edged sword, though. One on side, Level 20 is a perfect level for balanced PvP, as anyone can achieve it, and it really plays well to the "skill over time" philosophy.
On the other hand, it's far too short for some people. Doing missions and quests only, I can be level 20 before Southern Kryta. That leaves Southern Kryta, The Crystal Desert, Southern Shiverpeaks, and the Ring of Fire all to do, without any real incentive to go out of my way to kill a mob.
So, in the end, it comes down to PvP versus PvE. I know that there's a PvP only option within GW, but I always feel that's "cheating", and it upsets me that I can't customize my armor for the appearance I want.
Honestly, I don't know how to remedy this issue. Personally, I'd like to see the level cap raised, but to something more reasonable than 100+. 30, or even 40 would be a perfect level cap, affording enough time to grow accustomed to the game before you've "done it all", and allowing PvP players to achieve their max level in a timely fashion.
I apologize for the poor wording of this post, but my grammatical skills elude me tonight. I think, though, everyone needs to remember that GW2 is still nearly two years away, assuming they meet their 2008 deadline. I'm sure that there were many ideas for GW1 that weren't received well, and I'd think that most of them didn't make it in the final release.
Personally, the only question I have... Will Eye of the North finally reveal what happened to Gwen? I hope so. Maybe its acronym isn't a coincedence.

Well Anet really did sell out. They sold out to the people who made Guild Wars what it is today: The buyers. Gaile Gray can go ahead and enjoy what Anet has in store for the Sequal. She's paid to enjoy it and that's great for her. Her job is to play video games all day, so that's great for her. However, there's a huge world of players out there that would love to take the time out of their busy lives to get into the hobby. Guild Wars 1 is perfect because you can go to the limit of 20 and such. However, GW2? that's just terrible and the sales are just gonna bomb. It really is a WoW-clone. Most of the players in this thread have spoken. They left WOW because of the life-less grinding. So if Anet wants to sell out for the sake of being like Wow, then players will just feel, why get the generic when you can get the original WOW.
Gaile mentions GW2 would be an open door for new players? Well most new players would get GW 1 first before even considering the sequal and once they realize GW 2 is in no real benefit to GW 1 (Hall Monument, w/e? Oh please, lame.), they'll just say, "eh After I'm done with GW 1, I think , "I think I'll just go back to remembering the video game world isn't a real one and just move on."

No character transfers?
Also, with those 4 races mentioned, is that an addition to the current human race, or are humans not playable anymore?

Think about how awesome that would be to complete a "rite of passage" quest to reclaim your ancestor's precious armor and weapons. Gaile has already said that gold will not be transferable (which I have no problem with), and to prevent people from selling these items on the GW2 side as a method to potentially cash in early and unbalance the economy at the start, the weapon customization part would be the ideal solution. Also, an armor crafter NPC could possibly "refit" the armor to the new character and have it bound to them that way. Consequently, only your character would benefit from GW1 in this manner and purely for sentimental reasons (not involving in-game $$$).
This would be a major selling point for me since I personally have ~3000 hrs logged in, 4 hard earned fissure armor sets, and tormented weapons on the line. It would be a terrible shame to see these achievements left in the dust seeing as how I expected more campaigns/expansions, and not an entirely new, unlinked game set hundreds of years in the future. Unfortunately, I do see issues with the human armor being worn on other classes (if this idea could even apply that way). Although I don't think this merits much concern since how would the descendants of a human from GW1 end up as a Charr in GW2?
Hopefully this will be implemented, as I cannot understand why anet would allow "achievements" such as minipets and titles to transfer, yet exclude the ultimate armor and elite mission weapon skins.

Remember they JUST recently put in a festival hats npc... now if you couldn't redeem the festival hats that you got in the past in GW2, well then that wouldn't make much sense to me. And i think if they make any connection with festival hats (because it is technically armor) normal armor itself will have some connection.
at least i hope...

While it would be nice to be able to transfer your old equipment from GW to GW2, I wonder how many of us would tire of that equipment anyway 2 years from now when GW supposedly comes out. Or see some equipment that they like better in GW2.
Dont get me wrong, I'm not opposed to the idea but I just wonder if it's really that big of an issue. It sure might seem so now....but later we'd probably be ready to just start completely fresh.

I see a lot of people under the impression that weapons, armor, and other items will be able to be carried over to GW2. That's not what the magazine describes at all.
It says the hall will act as a family inheritance where GW1 titles and minis will be on display. It also says "special weapons" you earned in GW1 will also be on display and can be taken out and used. The way it says special weapons that you earned makes it sound like you can't just transfer any ol' weapon you have.
Earlier in the article, it describes actively building your Hall of Monuments by completing quests in Eye of the North. It seems to me that maybe these "special weapons" are earned by completing quests as part of building your hall. In which case your current weapons don't carry over at all.
Well that's just how I see it, unless I missed a pertinent quote from Gaile a while back...

The fact is that grind is in every MMO. In Guild Wars, you still grind, just not for levels. You grind for more money, better looking armor, titles that give you some small benefit in PVE, that perfect gold weapon with a rare skin, etc.
The only thing that's different about Guild wars in respect to grind is that it doesn't do anything to improve your stats or skills, so people who play the game more don't get any functional benefit or advantage from playing more.

Oh please, lame.), they'll just say, "eh After I'm done with GW 1, I think , "I think I'll just go back to remembering the video game world isn't a real one and just move on." |

Oh, something else that I thought of, moving this stuff over would be a one time deal. You move that stuff over once and then that's it. You wouldn't be able to add extra stuff that you found later.

I'm not sure I like the idea of the items being penalized or being less then max though. Having those heirlooms and being to use them in GW2 as effectively as any other item would be a huge bonus. Also, if you think about it, if the universe stays the same, the Fissure of Woe might will still exist and the Smith might still be there crafting Obsidian armour for new characters. It might look slightly different, styles change over time, but having the old school Fissure armour available would be another one of those pretige things that could be carried over.

But Mendes, don't we still have the GW1 expansion? The way I've interpreted it is that PvE scrubs that don't want to pay for WoW can go hf in GW2 while GW1 can stay the good ol' GW it's always been. ??? Meh

The point for me would be that there would come a time where I officially retire my Guild Wars 1 characters, transfer their important belongings to their decendants and then just move on from there, no looking back. If you wanted to extend the rollplaying element of it, this quest could actually kill your character, send them into the Mists, leaving their treasures behind for their decendant to claim and continue their fight. Could specifically be a quest that is only unlocked if your account detects having Guild Wars 2 installed and activated. Hey, if these "special weapons you earn in GW1" for use in GW2 by your "descendants" are so personalized (probably gained through a quest, I'd guess), then why not make the -name- of the weapon/shield/whatever customized too? Like <Ancestor's last name> <weaponname> "Tempest Longbow" or whatever. You know what I mean.
...Eh, prolly not since some people have names like "Z O M G Boob" or other names....yeah, ok >_> "Boob Mace"....no.
It's a nice thought though, isn't it? <_<
Oh, and so far so good, in my opinion, at least based on the current information we have, regarding GW2 and the EotN or whatnot expansion. Looking forward to them both. More movement options, it's about damn time I wasn't restricted by a tiny little ledge that in real life even -my- clutzy self could hop over, yet my character has to go around it. And I'm hoping "destructible environments"=you can blast through walls or other obstructions with spells. Mmmm. No more shall my Fireballs be blocked by a puny wooden fence. Also looking forward to see how they implement this level cap system, and the ancestry system...and hell, everything else.
Side note: While it's mildly annoying/amusing to see the complete glut of whiners on here, hey, without them there wouldn't be balance, and we wouldn't appreciate the other posters as much. ^_^
