If I use a German Name in RA all these autopilot failures call me a Nazi. I once had a funny screenshot collection of various name-callings. The best one was one English guy who just had to tell me (after getting killed and losing) for half an hour how England's contribution in WW2 lead to Nazi Germany's downfall. That's a pretty gory engine he had there in his head.

If people hear that there are girls in my guild (or meet them during playing) they automatically either assume that they are fat and ugly or they think they can somehow take over with free candy (ectos, runs). What follows is a submissive plea to join the guild.

On the other hand I disdain exploitation of nerds (no offense, I have excellent people here at work) by playing pretty princess on the internet.

I get what you mean. I speak both French and English, and I don't generally use the fact I speak French more than English (but this can be debatable, husband speaks English only and we spend a lot of time together, but I went to French schools, universities, and I speak French when I'm not with him) as an excuse of bad English. Except when I'm tired, I make stupid mistakes... even in French.

When I see a "CN I C DIS WEAPON PLZZZZZZZZZ???" I just can't help but think of a kid begging for a toy. The worse is that I have kids around to compare, these days! My nephews are around, one is 5, one is 3. In English, if he wants something, it's going go to be a "pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase???". And I compare it with "PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZ" which sounds as insisting...

In our alliance, we have a very similar mindset about language. If you wanna make fun of someone and let them know you're not serious at all, use netspeak. "LOLOLOLOLOL U NUB GTFO". No one's gonna take you seriously and you'll get laughs and similar replies. "IM NOT A NUB I HAZ MENDING".

At this rate I'm gonna edit all my posts with wall of texts, but I promise this edit is gonna be short.

That's... disturbing. Just... plain disturbing. But some people are literally obsessed with such things, and as much as I can say Nazism was bad, I'd never accuse a German guy that I just met in a random outpost of being a Nazi. "Nazi" doesn't rhyme with German for me, but I've seen commentaries on how people associated both at a quite discusting level. And it ticks me off. >_>.

Nice Alliance there Kusandaa (needless to say I'm jealous, what with having a very small online friendship circle ). It's easy to make typos, whether you're tired or not, and for that allowances should be made.

The constant 'plz, pls, plx' and what-not is annoying and implies idiocy. The person may not be an idiot, but I'll view them as one for that sort of language (just like excessive swearing). If I'm in a rush, I use thus rather than therefore (:3 I'm smart, lulz) or w/ instead of with, but only around guildies. As general rule, proper grammar or the closest thing to it, is good.

On a side note I really should learn Afrikaans, what with being half-SA and everything.

Stereotype of yesterday: You're smart and really good at writing essays, so why do you suck at exams Tatile? Why do have an 'E' in Media Studies of all things? You're smart!

I'll let you figure out the reason here.

Just echoing what other female gamers have said...

Many other players assume that girls don't exist on the net, or if they do, they either: 1. assume you are some ugly fat nerd chick, or 2. perfectly available to hit on or make sexual remarks to.

I don't post my RL pics on any forum, and the only Vent server I will ever log onto is my guild's server. I had it up to my eyeballs when I used to log onto a Vent/TS server for a PuG and get hit with "OMG a girl!" or "You sound hot, where do you live?" or far worse...

I play the game with my boyfriend (of 5 years). Even if I were 'available', I am not interested in meeting guys online.

Another girl echoing some of the sentiments here.
I think it may be a lack of reaility in recognising that the pixels on the screen are not actually me in person. Unfortunately for the that means that Im not a 6ft blonde ele in scanty armor. I could be an 80yr old bloke in a gimp mask. Heck 80yr old blokes in gimp masks should be able to play 6ft blonde eles if they want. My character is simply how I interact with the game and will not tell you everything about me in one glance.
There is also the misconception among that group that any female playing must either be unnattractive in some form or free sport. The idea that I, as a girl, have bought GW to play the game and not to strip/dance/cyber/be their online gf seems a completely foreign concept. How can I not be either an overweight nerd who is desperately searching for someone just like them or an eager semi porn star with a webcam?
If Ive failed to meet their absurd fantasy usually abuse will shortly follow.
As a result Im in a guild with a total number of 2 members - me and my OH.
Its a pity that those sort of players sour the experience for so many as there are players who are willing to see that the pixels on the screen arent the be all and end all of the player themselves and that sort of player makes this game worthwhile.

You are exaggerating. There are many guilds that aren't an endless sausage fest. Some prominent ones are even led by "girl"s. I would recommend trying out the guild recruitment boards here on Guru.

I dont doubt it. Im sure there are a lot of female headed guilds and a lot of other female gamers like me. My previous guild to this was headed by a female player. Unfortunately it is that portion of the community that thinks in terms of girl player=free ride that spoils it for the female players and for the male players who simply dont think or act like that.
Enough 'Ur hot! Wanna cyber?'s and it seems less hassle to stay insular than getting an earful of abuse everytime you refuse to have online sex with whoever propositions you.

This is the kind of stereotypes that female GW players have to put up with. People think that we can't play GW just because we're female.

Also it stems from the fact that people tend towards remembering bad experiences more oftern and easier than remembering good ones. I've been in good PuG's but most of the time I only recall bad experiences.

Then again female stereotyping is rampant within society whether people want to admit it or not. Look at all the pink trash flogged at the ever younger market. Curling tongs, straightners, make-up; it all portrays women as being shallow, vapid individuals.

Okies, rant over. People suck in general, not matter what Persons can be great, but people suck.

oh yeah, another lady here....yep been hit on soo many times.. until

they find out I am married (been with the same guy since Reagan was president of the usa)....and that I wont go on vent (uhm, when I made my computer I didnt include useless things like a mic, sorry.)....and I wont dance (my male monk looks very funny dancing for people--- ).

I choose to play both male and female characters, I didnt like any of the choices for monk when I first started so my monk is a guy....and I have a male rit as well (he is cute )....

I have found quite a few ladies playing the game and have added many of them to my friends list. (and yes I have a warrior and its female!---the male choices again, were butt ughly--though made my hubby make one when we first started playing .)

I must admit (despite my terrible use of it) I HATE abuse of the English language, I dont mind people with their little quirks (I tend to say 'lo indstead of hello)

"U" instead of "You" i can also deal with

but if its "waz" instead of "was"...I guess I'll never get it, its not even shorter so why not spell it correctly

The only time i tend to speak like that is when im layering on sarcasm with a spatula

Well, sprouting the idea that girls are bad at video games is just plain stupid. My GF doesn't play Guild Wars but I've watched her play tons of different games and I'm pretty sure she could make most male players cry and wet their pants simultaneously.

I did choose to make a female monk, but have several male chars because I preferred their looks over that of that their female counterparts (Rit and Para come to mind). If guys can play female toons, I see no reason why I shouldn't play male toons. Mrwar!

Truthfully, when I’m playing the game I don’t want to know anyone’s sexual preference, religious affiliation, or political beliefs. I‘m not even particularly interested in knowing your age or gender. I don’t even know how this stuff comes up in the course of playing a game. Why would someone getting ready to do a mission, a quest, or vanquish an area even mention any of that stuff? How does it relate to the task at hand?

Sharing that kind of personal information is OK within your guild I guess, but I personally wouldn‘t be interested in reading about any of it

On a side note, I found the original post - What to do with hard insults? - sited by the OP to be somewhat questionable for a number of reasons. But it was provocative.

And finally … yes real life stereotypes do affect me in the game - or at least one does. I don’t like beggars or people asking for handouts in real life and I don’t like them in the game either. Low-life is low-life.

Wonderful world we live in where we have to hide to prevent being victimised rather than actually dealing with the person who is doing the abusing.
The situation cant improve until we look at the attitudes that requires the victim to compensate or take responsibility for the attacker.
Nobody deserves to be targetted for any kind of abuse regardless of sex, sexuality, race, religion, disability or age nor should they be required to admit a fault in not hiding those facts if they are a victim of abuse due to them.
Unfortunately it seems that the game will reflect RL in this case.

I'm mildly amazed that people are still doing this in Guild Wars. In PvE, I'd say 1/3 or more of all players are female. While still not an even split, you'd think it would start to lose the novelty after the first hundred people you propose sexual relations to.

I don't hide my gender, nor do I openly advertise it. If someone asks, then I answer truthfully.

Truth be told, it hardly ever comes up. If I'm PuG'ing I get to the matter at hand, whether it be running screaming from a hoarde of rampaging spiders or just randomly murdering everything in sight. The only times I've ever been asked my gender are when I was in Spamadan trying to get rid (read = sell) stuff; any offers of cyber sex, or general annoying questions, are easily pre-emtively removed by dropping the "I'm engaged" card (unofficially, though, we don't have the money for it, but I have the ring on my right hand ).

Yes it affects me how people are retarded in game. It's not because you are behind a computer that you are powerful and can do whatever you want. IMO, they are weak and insecure people in RL.

I'm surprised by the number of LBGTA people in Guildwars, it's nice to know that you are not alone.

I'm a little confused - how do these topics come up? You would have to volunteer information about your own race, religion, sexual orientation, etc, in order for someone else to then respond to it (either negatively or positively).

Frankly, I play GW to get away from real life worries, and so I prefer to "keep on topic", as it were - doing missions, fighting monsters, etc.

Do most people bring up these topics or are they responding to them?

Well not everyone's in your situation. I'm home-ridden on leave from university, at my mother's hometown to recover from a surgery resulting from a pretty bad leg fracture. When I came here, I couldn't even go take a bath on my own. I can't drive. My IRL friends are in Montreal and not here; I only have one here, and she works, has a boyfriend and is pregnant. My husband's here and even though I spend time with him (we got up at 4 after simply watching TV shows in my bed, I fell asleep at some point) but he has essays, reading and other work to get done. Right now, he's reading on the couch, so I can't do anything with him for a couple hours :P. Then we're gonna watch a movie.

Given I can't even drive (no mass transit either) and can barely go out... well I have the TV and the computer. And since I can have social interactions with people on the net, I choose the computer.

People have different hobbies - what's bad with having games as one? It's always been my main hobby, between others (languages, drawing, reading, some sports when I was younger). And I'm not the only one.

I totally agree, if you have to hide your gender to avoid being harrased or insulted....then your not in the right group of people, or they are just lunkheads thinking that girls cant play video games.
My Guild Leader is female, and just because shes female doesnt mean she is a horrible guild leader, she keeps it running smooth as anyone could and keep idiots out who feel it is their duty to insult people for small things....people are just ignorant of such things i guess.

Im also sure that atleast 1 in 15 people in our guild of 300+ are female, some of them are the best people i've talked to on this game ever.

Yeah, if you play with your friends and barely have to take PUGs, you won't see this behavior. However, for the people who PUG... this type of stuff is rampant. It's everywhere. Some stuff, although, are more directed at guilds rather than PUGs; if you've read the whole thread, some people seem to have a hard time finding guilds that won't kick them for not being a hot girl, or are kicked 'cause they have a different religion or whatever.

If you play with people, you get to know them. And even sometimes in PUGs, you say stuff that can reveal some things about your IRL situations: telling the mesmer she's hot either generally says you're a straight guy. Now you say "brb wife needs something"... we know you have a wife too. But it could also mean you're a lesbian - in which case, guys either drool over you or start trolling 'cause you're homosexual (this is worse with gay men).

"Kid woke up, hold on". You have a kid. It doesn't say much, but we know this person is a parent.

And such things would bother you how? That's the kinda question I've eventually wanted to come with this topic.

Why does some stuff bother people so much to the point they wanna flame others 'cause of IRL situation within a guild or a PUG? Does it matter so much to that guy that I'm gay, and in his team? I've asked one dude once, and I was replied "yes, you live" or something along the lines. It doesn't hurt, but it's still awkward.
