[MERGED - OFFICIAL] Dueling aka 1v1

ther people who want 1v1 pvp *to test a prospective member* are giving a completely wrong reason.

since the only test is how they work together as a team the reason is ....not valid

a probationary period to see how the person works out is the only real test not a 1v1 which will never turn up in GVG

I agree with Loviatar with the comment on "Testing" people for a Guild through a 1vs1 battle is not a valid complaint.

Don't cheap shot them with logic give them a fighting chance, or they will lose the "We like it, we don't care if it's unbalanced, it won't change the gameplay, it's just that we the ego people want to win 1v1 and PWN people"

I don't think we really want to corner them that badly.

To be honest, I haved mixed feelings regarding dueling.

On the one hand, 1v1 removes a lot of strategic features I love in this game. Positioning & targetting become pretty pointless and the 1v1 arena lvl might as well be a huge circle, ring or square (as opposed to complex and strategic areas for team PvP or even PvE). Moreover 1v1 builds will be a lot more simplistic than team PvP ones (or PvE for that matter). You'll always need decent firepower & some healing skills, plus a couple of toolbox skills (snare/run/interrupt). In a few words, 1v1 will use a small percentage of the game potential.

On the other hand, there are quite a lot of wannabe duelers out there. Some of them are l33t kids with a big ego, but I'm pretty convinced that there are good players with interesting and original build ideas for 1v1. Most people tend to think that 1v1 means an endless fight between W/Mo (like the final duels in Fort Koga). I'm sure that if ANet implements a 1v1, dueling can become somewhat interesting and complex like PvE is. It won't be as fast paced as team PvP, it won't require group strategy or teamplay, but it won't be a mind numbing clickfest either. If dueling works in very poor and unbalanced games, I'm sure it can work better in GW.

I trust ANet won't balance future skills & expansions based on 1v1 fights. If dueling is implemented, it will and should remain a secondary aspect of PvP (one specific arena), yet it will a worthy addition to the game.

Mesmers would dominate every other class in 1v1 dueling.
That's besides the point of this discussion- it departed from the realm of reality into fantasy at conception.
People aren't here discussing dueling as a strategic exercise, it's a back and forth squaking of "I want it because" and "It's a bad idea because."

Not sure if this has been said, but they should make a Dueling Area, lik ein Runescape.

There are 4 pits, each pit with spectator walls, and a hospital in between all 4.
Inside the hospital is a bank. Anywhere in the duel area you may challenge a person to a duel, you can set the rules(no running, no range, no weapons, no armor, etc), and set your wagers(if any). Once both people agree to the duel, they are teleported into an arena, the counter starts, 3..2..1.. and then they just duel. And for added fun, next to the hospital, would be a rotten tomato vendor, where you can buy rotton tomatos, go up on a wall, and throw them at people, dealing no damage, but having it be pretty funny(that was also in runescape. =p)

The point of the dueling IS strategy, thats what I'm talking about, I was asking if there was going to be any 1v1 and 2v2 where it would be LESS strategy based and more based on how well you use your character. I don't really understand why you're telling me it involves strategy when I already know that. Telling someone they made an ignorant post when you must not have understood it isn't nice...

That basically sums it up. This would bring in all sorts of new builds that would be otherwise useless in larger numbers because they really don't help anyone but themselves and don't rely on anyone. I think it would be fun is all.

I don't know if any of you played a warcraft custom game called dota. Well it was a team of 5 against a team of 5, so everyone chose a hero and you would try to kill the other teams world tree (or frozen throne if you were sentinals).

ANYWAY it was really popular and there was clans for it and stuff, the problem was, in clan matches it would get terribly redundant. The same heroes were almost always picked, not because they themselves were stronger but because they worked really well with the other heroes on the team. It became almost entirely strategy aspect and it felt more like playing chess than some action game.

I got an idea when thinking up something that people could use money on while having fun, and at the same time be in the spirit of GW - PvP.

Some villages/cities should have a seperate arena with an NPC that can arrange fights. First one person talk to the NPC to declare himself the champion. The next person to talk to the NPC gets the opportunity to declare himself the challenger. The NPC then opens up for bets, and then the other players can bet on one of the combatants and give the NPC gold (pick from a list 50-1000 gold maybe), and the NPC will calculate the odds (depending on levels, wins, items etc.). After a while (a fixed time, or if 10 seconds have passed without any new bets) the NPC will count down for the fight to begin. Then the two combatants will turn hostile to each other and be able to attack each other. The winner will receive a share of the pot, the loser will be resurrected, the people that placed money on the winner will get their winnings, the people that placed money on the loser will get nothing. The champion can then get the option to tell the NPC to give the chance to a new challenger (there will be a time limit before the NPC is free for a new champion) or tell him that he's done for now (opening up for a new champion).

Something must be in place to avoid abuse, though (with no failsafe people will lose on purpose and have their friends bet on the winner). I have not come up with a perfectly good solution to avoid people fixing matches, but neither has the real world as far as I know But with a little help, I am sure we can work something out if people like this idea. I'll post my ideas once I get them fleshed out a bit.

That's a great idea! As for the abuse thing... well... That'd be tough to work out, but not impossible... just take a bit of brainstorming from the dev's.

I've read alot about potential scams and issues with other players and i've seen these noobs acting like real idiots in towns knowing there's not much that can happen to them

I think there should be in town duels added into the game where two people can battle it out and the winner gets either gold or some kind of reward for winning other than xp

This idea has been mentioned before. But I wish ANet would implement this. People could also bet on it, to make it even cooler. Also, maybe they could add duels that are to solve a dispute, or just for fun.

1 vs 1 Dueling is not fair..say you have a War/Mo against a War/Mo..same skills practically..the duel could go on forever. Or this may be unfair in some instances of an Elementalist/Monk against a War/Mo...It's not about 1 vs 1 dueling in this game, it's about teamwork and strategy.

Or a Mo vs W. I don't know about you, but in PvP 1 warrior was slashing at me forever and I would just /sit till my next hp regen needed lol

Monks would probibly be the best at it because of their healing and banishing spells.

With the right builds, a good player can prevent far more damage than any one person would be capable of doing. I imagine if I went up against another player with a build very much like mine, we would find ourselves duelling endlessly, as we would both heal faster than we take damage and would never fall far below full health...
And I'm not even a Monk either!

Of course, there may be issues with balance on this. So maybe have a timer, and the one that has dealth the most damage to the opponent when the time is up wins, since obviously monks can just focus on healing and never die.

Maybe ban healing magic from duels?

You mean EVERYTHING that can heal (including signet, aura of restoration, blood magic in general, etc.)?
