The Biggest Jerk You Ever Encountered in GW (no posting names)
Dwiggit
Ok, here's my quick story.
I like jumping into the random arenas for a quick game now and then. I usually like to appear friendly to the group to get them talking to each other, so I say "Howdy!".
Almost always, some people reply with some greeting and appear nice.
But this day was different!
Within 3 seconds of my "Howdy!", I get the reply...
"STFU DWIG!!!!"
I was initially stunned at this smack in the face, and was thinking of a reply, but as I was thinking, this unruly person was making demands on the other players in the party and telling them they MUST do as he says during the battle.
I thought better of posting, and just logged off. I didn't feel like getting into the abuse. I just want to play to have fun.
Oh well, that's my jerk-of-the-day story.

I'll say hello to you if you're on the other team and you say something first; however, I will usually keep my trap shut during random arena, even amongst my own team, under most circumstances. It goes a long way toward prevention of drama and trauma.
[I've already told my story somewhere on the forum, when I thanked a monk for the healing--he thought I was being sarcastic cause I died once, there was a small scene, and suddenly I'm on his ignore list ]
DarthShadow
Back aways when I had a level 8 Mo/E in Ascalon doing the Walls quest...
There was this guy... I think he started a trend.
He looted everything that I couldn't pick up because I was responsible enough to heal over picking up some pennies.
He ran in when we were getting the pieces of the cannons.
He refused to use his Res signet on anything until it was down to only him.
He unequipped his weapon to show off how much more damage he does than Monks...
He, most of all, begged for Mark of Protection... WHEN WE WEREN'T EVEN A TOWN AHEAD!!!
I didn't even know what it WAS at the time... I obviously know now...

Biggest jerk i have seen was in ToA. I was advertising:
Stance tank LFG for UW.
A random single n/r invites me.
I ignore it.
Jerk: Accept me.
I ignore him.
Jerk: Accept me. I can be your next necro.
I still ignore him.
Jerk: Accept me.
I decline his invite.
Jerk invites himself again.
Jerk: ACCEPT ME! I Will be your next necro.
I still ignore him.
Jerk: Plssss accpet me. I'm pro in UW.
Me: Look, I'm looking for a group. I don't want to start one. Ok?
Jerk doesn't answer. Few minutes later:
Jerk: Accept me.
I decline him.
Jerk in public: "Don't invite Nocens Blighthammer!" then something about how i hacked the game so i could steal your loot...
Then he spams it.
He shut up for a while.
Then he invites himself to the group i am in.
Says the same thing in group speach. I get kicked.
I changed districts.
He starts swearing at me.
I ignore him.

I don't run into jerks anywhere near as much as I run into plain old idiots. I tend not to inflame the jerks as much because I just leave parties that put up with people like that and I tend not to speak a lot unless there's a lot of stuff going on.
However, there is a fine line between an idiot and a jerk, and they're both just as annoying. =)
Tonight I met the ultimate Berserker who gives Warriors a bad name. Forgot what his full name was. It was Nizo something or another. Anyhoo. He was a generic noob W/R that swings sword and uses Healing Signet/Troll Juice ad nauseam. The idiot went blitzing into Hell's Precipice like it was pre-Searing and got himself killed several times, never waiting for energy to recharge, always racing off after each fight. Well we pretty much gave up on him and made plans to regroup and restart the mission but let him go get himself killed one more time.
Right before we jumped ship on him, he crossed that fine line from idiot to jerk.
"WTF why u not doin anything."
"Im doing all the work."
"U du nothing u pussies."
Well, calling us pussies for reloading our weaponry (spells) after each fight really ruined my day and made me want to sulk in the corner and cry. We ditched the dumb###.
We went through with a far more disciplined team and beat the mission in one shot. End of story.
Not the biggest jerk I've run into in this game, but worthy of public humiliation nonetheless.
I also ran into some guys cracking Jew jokes last night in the wee hours of the morning. The screenshot didn't come out though, so next time I'll get those Fochers.
EDIT: By the way, this might be the video of the angry guy smashing his monitor. Not the same as the kid flipping out at his X-Box.

Most recent jerk story:
It was during the Halloween period. The horseman in Ascalon was dishing out treats in return for charr carvings. Due to the lazy attitude of many players, they were buying the carvings rather than getting them for themselves.
12 Charr carvings (enough to get all 4 goodies) were therefore selling at stupid prices like 750 gold. I farmed Charr for about 45 mins (I had nothing much else to do, lol, and could do with some easy money). I made about 3k. Anyway, I was selling my wares in Ascalon when the following dialogue evolved:
Me: WTS: Charr Carvings
Jerk: How much?
Me: 750 for all 12
Jerk: LOL
Me: What? That is the going price right now.
Jerk: LMAO in your face
Me: Whatever. You're obviously slow to catch on to new trends.
Jerk: OMG STFU NOOB I HAVE COMPLETED GAME 6 TIMES!!!
Me: So?
Jerk: That makes me wise
Me: No, it makes you a sad individual with too much time and too few friends.
Jerk: STFU I HAVE 15K ARMOUR AND 60K IN STORAGE
Me: So?
Jerk: You are wasting your time
Me: I made 3k from these carvings; I don't call that wasting time.
Jerk: LOL I can make that in 30 mins
Me: If you are so high and mighty, why don't you go hunt charr carvings rather than trying to buy them?
I fail to remember the rest of the conversation, but I recall it ended with him realising I'd forced him into a corner, and he responded in the only way that jerks can - by calling me a noob and then ignoring me.
I love how so many jerks say "I have completed this game 4 times" - as if it makes them superior to you.
Lol.

I meet Jerks all the time, when people sell shields and swords they think are the best. Like Grognars shield with 16 defense -2 recieved dmg and +45 health while in stance req 8. He sells them for like 20K, but he has like 4 of the exact same shields and wont admit that its actually a collector shield. Then after a little arguing this guy thinks im noob, because I think his shield is collector item, I show him my MAGMAS shield and crystalline sword, then he cancels the trade and says your shield sucks, its 15 defense, and ignores me. 16 to 15 denfense big deal, which one looks better?
Sister Rosette
During an Orozar run some jerk started using the trade channel....
Lol nub.
Lol nub.

This is just a simple post, on why you think people are jerks/idiots in Guild Wars. Does it specifically serve a purpose? Is there relevance to training a whole zone on your party? What went wrong, what spoiled brat didn't get what he wanted today, etc..
Why? Simply Why. Did the parents go wrong raising them in values? I doubt it.
Are they simply idiots/jerks by nature? I mean, when you're in a FoW group, and one person doesn't like that "Noones giving him the dark remains" so he runs out and trains and wipes the whole group; one question arises. Why?
Post your Thoughts/Comments on why you think people are the way they are when they become rude/jerks/idiots.
THIS is not a VENT post, so please do no rant, rather, discuss what you think their mentality is? IE: "They didn't give me what I want, so I'll screw em' over"

[[Edit: This is also a reason why good PUGS are hard to find]]
Remember, no names. Just say soandso.

Trains, is my Everquest kicking in. Training = Running around, aggroing everything and pulling them back on your party.
Monseir
they think your such a jerk, that they get pleasure out of annoying someone.
Alone)
Don't think the posts before were very helpful. Well, maybe the part about the pleasure out of annoying someone.
Well, it's an online game. No one can tell who you really are. And sometimes, people just want to let out some steam, or just let their dark sides of themselves go all out in Guild Wars. Not cool sometimes, but it happens all the time. No one really gets in trouble in Guild Wars if they start being a jerk to anyone they feel like. So it's like an open door. But this doesn't mean they are jerks in the real world. I just find it funny that my 9 year old brother is more mature than the 20 year olds I meet up.

welcome to the internet

I think its much more simple than any of this... children don't have a lot of freedom.
They're forced to go to school, forced to eat dinner when and where their parents tell them, forced to go to bed at a certain time, their gaming or TV priveleges can be taken away in the blink of an eye, their teachers control them when their parents don't... I remember being young, you don't have control over anything. I think they act like jackasses in GW to unwind and let off steam in the only place they have free rein to do whatever their devious little minds can think of. They can't affect anyone offline, they feel like they can't even affect their own life, so they stir up shit online, where we are essentially all on much more equal footing, and they can hide behind their right to be anonymous, name calling and flaming with impunity.
I remember when I was 10 years old or so, I went into my first chatroom, it was on... not AOL, but another similar franchise... what was it... ah Prodigy. I went into the general chat, struck up a conversation, got about four lines in and said "thats nice... considering you're a #%!#$" etc. I got such a kick out of it, tears were running down my face... I laughed so hard my stomach hurt for days. Looking back, it was stupid and irresponsible, but to a 10 year old boy it was the greatest thing in the world.
I'm not defending these kids' actions, I get as pissed off at them as anyone else... I'm just trying to explain why they might act this way.

I think these people are jerks in real life. Some maybe don't have the courage to be a jerk in real life, and hide behind their character to let them do whatever they want. Others are jerks in real life.
Some people just enjoy hurting/upsetting/annoying others. It's the bully from school. Only this time he has charr on his tail with your name on. They find annoying someone to be a power rush, seeing what they can do to provoke a response.
I suppose in a way its like the GTA games (no i have nothing against them in case anyone thinks I do ). You can't be a gangster in real life, and go carjack or beat up people just coz you want to. But it's nice to lose yourself for a moment and just use the npcs to take out your real life stress etc. And in Guild Wars, it's even better. Not only do you get to take out your frustration on someone else, but you get to see THEM frustrated!
Just my opinion on it. I'm sure some people differ as to their reasons. And I also am sure that plenty of it is down to immaturity, as Whosaidwhatnow points out about himself at age 10

This is really simple. People by nature are not confrontational.
Behind anonymity you can do what you normally wouldn't in real life. Throw in the fact that this is a game (kids), and whala. Jerks.
Remember this, in real life only 2% of ppl will actually talk to you or do the things ppl do in games. Most don't have the stomach to face the real consequences of their acts.

Roza
This game is mostly played by young males of our species. Young males often desire power and attention (there are biological reasons for that). One way to feel powerful or at least get attention is to be able to affect other players (by 'Pwning' them being, being able to order them around, making them feel insecure about their builds etc.). By annoying players, you also affect them and thus have some sort of power or hold over them (the power to ruin their game, their friendly discussion, their mission, etc.). This is easy to do, as players can be quite sensitive. Griefing is an easy way to affect others, especially for for those with poor social skills (which is often true for very young players). And, unlike real life, there are generally not that many consequences to behaving this way, unless you are doing this within a guild.
Older players use different strategies to put other people down and make themselves feel better, most of the time. They position themselves as great experts and put people down for making mistakes, having the wrong skills, calling others NOObs etc. To them, it seems as if they are justified in doing this, so it does not conflict with generally accepted moral codes. Making fun of people who behave stupidly is a bit like this, but in a diluted form (and not as bad, I think).
Some people like to feel powerful as part of a group, rather than as an individual. These players have nothing to gain from putting other people down, as they would rather lift other people, including themselves, up and achieve something. For these people, good, friendly guilds are the ideal havens. Having nice friends is a good alternative.

for the same reason people are jack-offs in cars, who are otherwise kind people in general public; when people are presented with the ability to hide behind a fascade they feel as if it justifies thier ability to act like an immature assclown.

I thought this might be worth mentioning as an unusual instance of inflammatory stupidity.
Tonight I was on a bad internet connection and just wanted to do one thing quickly before logging off and switching to a better one. I've got a level 20 character that has beaten the game in shiny-shiny 15k armor but I'm playing my new N/Mo who just made it out of pre-searing.
So a monk comes up to me and wants to start a trade. I've got plenty of stuff, I'm lagging like hell, and I'm in a hurry. I cancel. He follows me and requests a trade session again. I'm mildly curious so I check it out - it's a minor rune that I've already got. Sweet of him but I don't need it; he'd do better giving it to someone else. I cancel again and try to finish what I was in the middle of before he'd requested the second trade session.
Suddenly Jekyll turns into Hyde and the monk starts yelling at me in whisper mode for being an idiot n00b. How does that work? "You don't want my handouts!?! You bastard! You suck!" At that point I politely responded that I already had the rune and logged off. Maybe I should have said "no thank you" but that lapse really wasn't what I was being yelled at for. Thinking it over, this isn't very unusual: player <x> expects a certain procedure and outcome. If things don’t happen as expected whoever is responsible must be yet another GW dimwit, never mind that there’s no reason why things have to abide by that procedure or have that outcome.
For all that there are some total jackasses in the game, there are also people who manage to be offensive simply by being far too quick to label other people as jerks, idiots, and n00bs.

I agree with Sister Rosette (you're off megatokyo forums right?). That picture sums it up. I think people are jerks because no one knows who they are, and they won't get beaten up for being a jackass. Unlike the real world, where if you do something stupid/annoying it will come back and slap you in the face

Being a girl, some times I experienced examples of sexual-related idiocies: like males, who might be very shy in real life or dunno, that make some bad taste comments or try to flirt whenever they look at a female character.
The funniest thing that happened about it was in the PvP team arena. Here I see this guy who was flirting (????????) with a former guild mate of mine who was on a female character (ehrr, though I didn't even recognize him/her at the moment). Now I wouldn't have cared less about it if it weren't that he and the female character guy started spamming the public chat. I told him if he was going stupid or something, thus he replied to me "call me stupid! I'm playing with a girl ". At that moment I was playing a male character. I tried to tell him that I didn't care what he was doing but he could stop spamming... Basically he and my former guild member started insulting me: he called me what in english could be translated as a "aXXhole".... I again told him that he was stupid.
And you know what? He said he was gonna report me to Anet because I called him "stupid" and thus he'll get me banned. Do note that he had called me "aXXhole" a moment before.... XD And he kept going on with insults and "you'll be banned now" till I put him on ignore.
The second hilarious thing about that was that me, the rude male character who dared to bother him, was a girl. The other guy, the kind and flirty female character, was a boy.
Poor idiot. XD

the biggest jerk i met was some guy in a run i had to dunes of despair.
after the run he whispered me saying, "dude, did you actually pay??"
"uh, ya, thats what you do after a run..."
all the time the runner is on public chat saying "GIVE ME MY MONEY!!!!"
so i'm like "this guy is a rip off artist. dont trust him"

I'll say hello to you if you're on the other team and you say something first; however, I will usually keep my trap shut during random arena, even amongst my own team, under most circumstances. It goes a long way toward prevention of drama and trauma. [I've already told my story somewhere on the forum, when I thanked a monk for the healing--he thought I was being sarcastic cause I died once, there was a small scene, and suddenly I'm on his ignore list ] |
I hope that my leaving made the rest of the team pissed at him. (and hopefully leave as well) It was obvious that his response was uncalled for.

I've had numerous run-ins with jerks. What really irritates me are people with a really limted view of the game and think they are the best player online. I play a Necro and I always like to tell my group beforehand what my build is. For example, "Hi guys, I do echo-spiteful with some domination spells".
Now one group we had this crackpot elementalist with absolutely no energy management. Half way through a fight he starts spamming his energy, then start "wtf necro, give me energy" and other abuse. I then repeat, "Sorry, but I am a curse necro, I cast spiteful spirit and basically do damage". Not before long again "necro is pathetic, necro isn't doing anything", "wtf no battery and no minions, you're a noob, you can't play", "whats the necro doing, nothing, pathetic". To make matters worse, one of the idiot monks also asks "yea, you're not doing anything".
I had enough abuse and I said, fine, next group don't nuke, don't do anything. Well, the group wen't down pretty quickly and I said see, thats what I do, I damage them, a lot. Then the jerk again calls me a noob and says "no, thats smiting". At which point I stop doing everything, I stop spiteful spirit, I stop backfire I just watch. All of a sudden he's really confused at why they're taking so long to die.
Sigh, some people never learn.
Another time I was looking for an Underworld group, again playing echo-spiteful. So some guy says he's a solo monk and solo's the Underworld and wants a dmg dealer. So I whisper him and say I can do that. First group he aggros, he dies, then starts calling me a noob and an idiot and useless and tells me "that's why echo-nukers are better and necros are useless, you need meteor shower". I ask him if he's a solo monk, why does he need meteor shower to survive? Isn't he supposed to be solo?
Finally, the other type of jerk I hate are people who join your (or another) group and start telling everyone who to accept, who to kick, and what to do. "Kick the necro we can't win this with a necro". "Don't take a mesmer they are useless".

Hmm, the latest jerk I've had was during a run, where I was the runner. I'm starting the run and I make it clear that everyone needs to stay behind so they don't aggro anybody. Despite my warning, a W/Mo puts on mending and sprints up behind me, luring a huge cluster that I had just evaded. I nearly die but manage to escape to safety, and I make it very clear that nobody should follow me. Another guy tries to defend the W/Mo:
"ur such a newb runner"
"i do this run all the time"
"newb"
It continues for the duration of the run, but thankfully the two guys are nice enough to pay me. I've had plenty of jackass scammers in my career.
