i've only done two runs, first time there was a chest at the very end, the second time there was a chest in the mouth of the cave. my question is are there almost always chests? and also about how often do golds drop?
Racthoh
There won't always be a chest in the path that you take, however if you run furthur to the area there Khobay is you'll usually find one every time.

I didnt notice this until I swapped to sword, since cyclone axe did this for me automatically :P
You don't even have to wait for them to cast healing spring. And as long as they're in each others Heal spring range, the "hit them each once trick" works. I guess it triggers some kinda automated response that doesn't envolve using Heal Spring unless attacked further? It shaved alot of time off my runs cause I don't have to string them out as much, and you don't have to switch back and forth once you start attacking the last spider. I can hit them in clumps and not have to worry about the springs.
I've actually dropped Flurry, and Dolyak sig in favor of Phyiscal Resistance (as its only physical damage we're concerned about), and I've found that the advantage is in the increased mobillity. But I prefer PR over DS because I don't have to worry about the speed cut from the sig and can get away if I need to. Since it's a stance I don't have to spam Flurry to get my shield/Weapon bonuses. Using all three Dolyak, PR and watch yourself would indeed be completely unneccesary.
I showed this run to a buddy of mine, and together we came up with the idea of using plauge touch to pass on poison to the Spiders, but wasn't sure how effective it would be with them using Melandru's Resiliance. I WAS using sever artery/gash, but to me it didn't seem as quick using Galrath/Final, and I think I was losing ground with the resiliance stance.

I tried this, have died a few times before nailing a build that works for me.
Sprint, flurry, Evis, Ex Strike, Sheilds up, Watch yourself, Doylaks, heal sig
I found with Doylaks and watch yourself I still took too much dammage from the spiders to survive the big mob outside the cave. With Sheilds up you're much more impervious to the attacks and are much more mobile. Its slower (No cyclone axe) but it works well.
Sadly this run is holding out on me. I got no golds, 2 purples, 2 keys and a bit of cash. The first run yielded 2 shards and a perfect Vampiric shadow bow of enchanting (max mods, max dam, yummy) so I'll keep at it when we have favour (sadly rarely when I'm online).

I have been doing this run since september after I had spotted Racthoh had kindly posted his secrets.
I make a point to try the other builds and variations to Improve the speed of the run. Lately I have seen a lot of post regarding Physical resistance and I have to say that I am not a big fan. While it is great for damage reduction I feel that some of the earlier builds without it are quicker and some of the best.
Personally I like to run with flurry combined with cleave which cannot be used with another stance. Where I feel that using the correct equipment and taking the minimal defence nessecarry to maximise offence is the key to speed.
Look no further than the first few pages to see builds that can tank all the spiders at the cave mouth at once and can power through the feeble healing of healing spring of multiple errmm "springers"!

what skill do you use to counter SS??
And i use an axe lol what skills can i use instead of galgrath slash/gash/sever artery?

Use Sprint to counter SS.
Cleave, Executioners Strike maybe even Penetrating Blow

For my Axe Build I found that the following skills did just fine and killed quickly enough.... with my W/Mo
Dolyak, Healing Sig, Desperation Blow, Penetrating Blow, Exec, Eviscrate, Sprint, Watchful Spirit
Watchful Spirit does most of the damage reduction to the spiders and war types. no need to cast healing sig more than twice per group.
Very Nice guid, TKS

I run an axe build, w/me
cyclone axe(penetrating)
Eviscerate
Executioner's Strike
Watch Yourself
Shields Up
Healing Signet
Physical Resistance
Sprint
I like Shields Up cuz it allows me to not have to run away if i got 9 spiders attacking me and the dmg is minized for 17 seconds with only a 13 second cool down, I run 12 st 13 axe 11 tac and 4 insp, and can do a solo run in about 40 minutes. I also do dual runs with a guildie adding in a rez sig for safety sake and do the run in less than 30 minutes.

The problem being that it has a 10 second recharge, which kinda sucks considering it also has that conditional part about having higher health. If you're using Flurry, I think that an adrenaline skill would be better. If using Physical Resistance, Thrill might be the better choice.
linkid
Because Thrill has a high recharge time, I use Power Attack, it's pretty much the same damage except (at least) twice as often. That's for the build with zealous and physical resistance though (no recast of flurry). I also have 15 strength and only around 10 tactics... if you have lower strength and higher tactics, thrill of victory will do more dmg per attack, but once every 3 (or 4) attacks vs 7 (or 8) attacks is pretty different.
Sab
Finally got around to doing this. 5 shards, a gold and a few k's of merchant fodder, not bad for a first run, eh? I used a Flourish build I posted a while ago:
Pure Strike
Desperation Blow
Power Attack
Flourish (E)
Watch Yourself!
Healing Signet
Dolyak Signet
Sprint
My question is: Is Desperation Blow a good idea? The spiders counter it with Melandru's Resiliance, so I'm thinking it would be better to bring another attack instead (like Thrill of Victory, which would be perfect with Flourish). Or does Deep Wound and Bleeding make it worthwhile?

Desperation blow is an awesome skill, but I don't think it fits in here.
Weakness + crippled on a spider -> 4 pips of regeneration.

Desperation blow is mores suited for farming the Forest of the Wailing Lord.
Raxxman
I've found Doylaks + desperation blow +16 tactics healing sig. handles the scales easy. Only if you're fighting just scales mind you, you have to clear out the other pests before you tackle them, but with the mighty heal you can outpace the scales degen.
Dolyak, DB, Heal sig, Bash Bash, DB, heal sig, Bash Bash Heal sig, Dolyak, DB Evic, Ex, heal sig, etc.

Meh, Thrill of Victory just doesn't work for me. It's useless at the beginning of the battle, and towards the end, it's only usable right after Healing Signet.
Raxxman
hmm I go Healing sig, Evis, Ex strike, Thrill of vic which seems to work well.
Thing is Thrill often does 100+ dammage when I use it on armoured cave spiders, so I find a use for it.
DB with Doylak is more spammable with similar dammage + a condition (can be bleeding which is about the only useful one)

1) It was my first successful run. I was being cautious throughout.
2) My Axe is neither 15% nor customised. This slows the killing.
3) I got a truly lousy beach spawn that took 30 minutes to get through. Normally it takes me around 15 minutes to reach the cave.
My next two runs took no more than an hour. Again, that should speed up once I've got the stance axe I need and customised it.

Me and my guildie went in last night just for fun since we're on TS all the time we were both like hey lets practice some adrenaline spikes, so we just kill one spider by healing and charging adrenaline for EXE and EVIS, then we call a spike and the next one is done in 6-8 seconds later, we also chain Shields up the whole time so never have to retreat unless the spiders get into a real big group, but anyways we did a beach and tunnel clearing in 23 minutes flat using coordinated axe spikes and not needing to pace ourselves. I think tonight we'll try for one under 20 minutes either way its funner then being alone.
BTW we both use customized 15>50 axes, so thats +35% dmg so a hint to those who are taking over an hour to do this solo customize a weapon that you don't plan on selling and get that extra 20% dmg to save some time, because as they say: Time is money(even if it is play money)

I think I must be soft. You guys are running in there with the big guns. I am just trying to outlast those damn spiders. I do not have a superior absorption, a great axe that has a name, or a great shield ( i do love my collectors shields though). Here is my safe but slow build,
Sprint
cyclone axe
cleave
I will survive
watch yourself
dolyact
Physical resistance
Healing signet
This build makes up for the lack of superior armor and weapon defense and is nice for slowing down the poison degen. I tried some of the faster builds but I was still taking too much damage from the spiders and poison was a big headache. I can take the fight to them on the beach with this build!
I use a similar build to farm titans outside of Lion's arch. I just change out Sprint for Disrupting chop and elemental resistance instead of physical resistance. I personally love cleave. It is like a good woman, always there when I need it.
Thanks you all for making spiders a fun a profitable undertaking. Racthoh for president! I had a run with 5 shards and a couple of gold items. Are all the gold chaos axes from over there "vs. hexed'' or "while hexed"? Gimme a stance or 15^50 any day.
By the way,
2 Superiors
Strength 14
Axe 12 -13
tactics 12
rest in inspiration.
I hope to make my way up to a fast 40 minute clean-out-the-spot build!

Danger, with phys resist and doly sig, watch yourself shouldn't be needed. You can sub in an energy based attack skill for that (power attack, thrill of victory, etc). -2 stance shield, if you don't have it, will help. I run phys resist and doly sig along with -2 stance and major abs and it's 0s, I think even when healing signet-ing (except some 3s).
For weapons, 15% in stance axe from Sir_Pohl_Sanbert with zealous mod and customization would be pretty good. Add a shelter or defense mod and it'll be even better.
With more damage from the extra attack and from the axe (if you don't have 15% + 20% already) would easily speed up the run. As a sidenote I use a sword.

Here is my attributes:
Sword: 16
Tactics: 13
Rest in Insp.
1. Final Thrust
2. Healing Signet
3. Galrath Slash
4. Sever Artery
5. Hundred Blades
6. Watch Yourself!
7. Psy-Resistance
8. Sprint
1 sup sword
1 minor tactics
1 major vigor
1 major absorption
Have used Dolyak before but I will say its waste too use attributes on strength just becouse Dolyak. Use more at swordmanship/axe or tactics.
Watch Yourself and Psy-Resistance is more then enough.
Dolyak is good for people who is doing this for first time, but it can be dangerous becouse the slowdown.
Have found 2 gold Chaos Axes, 1 with 14% (stance) and the other on is 15% (stance), pretty nice but need new mods to make it perfect.

Wow, thanks guys for all the advice. I do need to put a new zealous mode on one of those collector's axes. I have a couple but one is vampiric/fortitude and the other has cruel/19% enchanting so they are not really good for this run. I have avoided eviscerate because it activates melandru's resilence. I also do not have 100 sword elite so i don't run sword.
I did like the idea of dropping watch yourself for an another axe skill. I may try to use a no strength build next. I will survive is just too useful against poison.
New proposed build
sprint
cyclone - break up any healing springs and build adrenaline +decent damage
cleave - nice consistant damage
executioners/power attack/thrill of victory - lovely spike
i will survive - slow down poison - insurance when needing to escape if i get sloppy
dolyacts
Physical resistance
Healing signet
Axe 14
Strength 13
Tactics 12
Rest in Inspiration
two superiors
I do have a ascolon helm on my gladiator armor and major absorption. I favor using executioner's since I will have 13 or 14 in axe with 13 in strength. I will probably have 12 in tactics. Do you guys strongly recommend an energy attack? I have never really used power attack. It may benefit from my decent strength as well.
Thoughts?

power attack works well with cleave, since you can alternate the adrenal and energy based attacks.

Absolutely. The difference is 15 AL - a whole shield's worth.
That said, if you're getting 12 damage from Called Shot instead of 3 I think you're missing something else in your equipment or you're not using skills properly. Do you have one piece of Absorption armour, an Absorb rune and a -damage shield?

Actually the difference is only 5 armor (85 + 10 vs 80 + 20). The only time, if any, that you should be getting double digit damage is when you're using healing signet. Other times, it should be 0s, 1s, or 2s.
A shield with -2 in stance combined with a stance should help. One piece of knights or ascalon armor for another -2, and an absorption rune (major is a good deal for money (-2), but minor (-1) would still do, and -3 from superior would be great).
