Oh Noes! The 'burbs!

PhpBB may be crap, but a simple check at the bottom of the page reveals...wait for it...vBulletin. Muk, if you have a better solution, feel free to communicate with the forum admins, or, better yet, donate to the site to facilitate better equipment.

Well you might also want to know that phpBB is capable of handling many many more users then we have. The largest forum on the internet, GaiaOnline.com uses phpBB. Their userbase is over 5.6 Million.

That's what happens when the cheap/free solution is used, kinda like if the official Guild Wars website was a myspace blog. Fansites shouldn't be the primary gathering spots for an entire community of MMO gamers, but it is because there's no alternative in this situation. Since this place is so "shit" feel free to help out...

Well mAlice, people will only help out if the benefits are tangible and visible. Since the program started there haven't been any visible improvements that can be seen by the average user. A slight speed improvement on low load times doesn't offer much hope for peak load times. I've not seen any mention of backend improvements being done. Asking people to give money based on promises just doesn't work (unless you're a televangelist). People need to see an actual plan and some actual improvements.

Meh just annoys me when people bitch but are not willing to do anything to help out.

Hockster, we need some inflow of money first to upgrade. See the catch 22? Can't upgrade and improve without funds to do so. I can't promise what upgrades we can do unless I know how much we can get. A new server is $3.5k, let me assure you that our donations do not approach that. Hardware for a server is expensive. Our Select program has been open for about 6 weeks now is all. And truly, just because our site performs better I doubt more people would donate. I honestly believe most are donating now because they understand the above issues and are contributing to help us have the necessary funds to fix the situation.

Hi, I've been member on various account on GuildWarsGuru for a long time and I see the servers keep getting slower due to the large number of members on this website.

Now, I might have a solution for this, if it's not already being performed.

The solution I was thinking of is; Deleting every single account that has zero posts on the forum and/or deleting double accounts on the same IP address.

This might reduce the long waiting time a bit, I'm unsure however.

Greetings,

No, unfortunately it doesn't work that way Ayumi. The issue is with the current amount of users accessing the database at the same time. It has nothing to do with dead accounts.

I know exactly how that works. All too well. But a page statement of what it is you want to be able to do might help. People are more willing to donate if they know exactly what the goal is. A chart of how much more is needed might not hurt either.

The old attracting more flies with honey rather than vinegar applies too.

I think my post was misinterpreted. If I was bitching about anything, it's the lack of an official forum hosted and supported by ANet.

Hockster, I understand. But I'm not the one who makes the final decision on what is purchased and how the money is allocated. So while I can bring your suggestion to our network owner I can't make any promises. Good idea though.

Speed really depends on the time of day I log on, mainly ok but at times unusable.

Have noticed that the site has been down at the same time 13.00 (GMT) during last week.

The main problem I seem to have is with the auction which I find slow, and unusable, most of the time.

Not moaning, just making observations as requested.

Good job, and big thanks to all involved.

Oh, thought so. Anyway, I had to try three times to just QUOTE you on that message, Inde. I really feel sorry for this community, it's a great community really and all we get is lag because of the large amount of users at times.

Well, I can't blame the users, they're right to be here. ;]

I'll probably make a donation in the near feature.
..Doubt it'd help, however..

Not that great tonight/day...every time I click on a new topic the "can not connect" page comes up. Took about 10 refreshes just to post this.

Oh Noes! The 'burbs!

Gah!! Timeouts everywhere. Thank goodness I save my news reading for when I'm waiting for Guru or I'd go nuts.

Personal grumble: it's bad enough I have to cross my fingers that any post I write actually gets through and is posted, but to get timed out then find that the thread I wanted to include a rumor-debunking post in was closed by an anonymous mod makes me want to give up. *sigh*

Oh Noes! The 'burbs!

The forum logged me out. I've never been logged out before, even when I try repeatedly. I stared at the site, in astonishment before I gathered what's left of my wits and logged in. Anyway, after a bad start of several timeouts, the site is running pretty smoothly. Even got to debunk that rumor that'd been bugging me all day, thanks to Dralspire reopening the thread in question. My harmony has been restored.

K, a few minor server tweaks done tonight to try to improve things. Some bigger changes happening within a week or 2 as well. Updates as I have them.

More often than not during daytime (Europe) I get "Database error" screens. Seeing how the boards are often really slow, I figure this may be an overload of some kind?

The minor work they did seems to have improved the server most notably at night right now. Seems to be moving along great. I still had a few time outs today and periods of slowness during the afternoon though, so if any of you would care to let us know about those and the approx. time it might be helpful. Thanks.

Running like crap.

What's the server stats/bandwith connection? This site is running as badly as the wiki was, back a month or two ago. Really badly....

Timeouts seem to be the norm.

Some forums are loading slowly, while others load only slightly slowly. For example: Riverside-sloooooow, the test weekend forum-slightly slow, Game and Dev Tracker-slightly slow.

From about 10:30 am to 11:40 am, pacific.

Ok we moved the adserver database somewhere else, please let us know if things are better or worse now. We will also be optimizing the server logging so it will take less load
