Nightfall (to me) was worth every change they made. I enjoy it more than the first two chapters, and really enjoy the new play style.
It takes up the exact amount of space as carrying multiple headpieces, which is what you suggested in your OP.
The only thing it costs you is a use from an expert salvage kit. Hero armor cannot be broken while salvaging. I carry all 3 runes for my necro...

Once you add your new activation key (Nightfall) to your account, you will download any files you don't already have downloaded at that time....
There are several threads on this already, with the consensus being they are chest drops from the Realm of Torment area.
You need armor crafted in Nightfall to utilize the Nightfall insignias.
