You need to do the academy quest first. Then you get to the "real" game. You are still in the tutorial and there are no henchmen there.
I tried a few times with a full group of players, to be honest the henchmen did a far better job of getting me to the end, in fact, of the 6-7...
The later ones offer more skills yes.
