I've noticed certain mobs that will do that once already aggroed before, as well (smite crawlers, for instance).

Protective spirit reduces damage; however life stealing (vamp), life loss (spoil victor), and life sacrifice (blood of the master) do not fall...

This doesn't seem to have any useful conclusion to be reached. Any speculation on Gwen and her quest can go in Lore.
