Even if they use hosts blocking, they can't easily block IP addresses.

I believe they're having issues on their end. I can access their website just fine, but I cannot ping it. However, their wiki doesn't work.

That's a different type of test. avast is quite good, and when installed as a minimum install it's very easy to use.
