You don't have to change secondary. Just do one of the change secondary quests...but reject the offer to change secondary.

You really need some offensive skills to beat the guy. A pure healing/protection monk will have some trouble as you noticed.

Just get someone who hasn't completed the quest to go with you...then you can talk to the archivist. I've always done this with henchies...

Why not just do the mission with a PUG and get the skill? With a good group, the last mission isn't hard.
