i think "inscriptions" will be treated exactly the same as existing types of mods.
we have suffixes
we have prefixes
and instead of *middlefixes* they thought "inscriptions" sounded better.
it would allow the most compatability in coding it

Here's the crux of the argument (as I see it):
Are more people turned off by the current "Economy" (such as it is), or turned on by it?
Guild Wars has a 20 level cap, yet people still play. You can get Max weapons and Armor easily, yet people still play.
I refuse to buy into this argument that the majority of players simply play this game to get rare skins. If that's true, then maybe I am playing the wrong game...
The reason why certain Mods and Runes should not be available only to those who grind and farm is simple: We don't all have time to do it.
Someone rebuked me for using a real life example (Enron), in describing the game. Well, I'm going to return the favor...
This is not real life. This is an escape from real life. If I wanted to "work" for Gold, I'd join a goldfarming company and get paid for it.
"Gold" is just a little reward for playing the game, like 15k armor, and rare skins. But, IMO, some rare items (and really, only the Warrior weapons!), got out of control with pricing. I think it's a bad thing, not because I can't have one (I already have the Dragoncrest Axe, my first Green!), but because I think it turns new players off.
Guild Wars is a game, and should be fun for the most people possible. I understand IF (big IF), the inscriptions work the way we think they will, and 15>50 mods and crystallines become "cheap", some people will be very upset. That's understandable.
Hopefully, though, these people will find new stuff to play the game for, and new players will benefit as well.
Me? I'm just along for the ride...

I think that this will lower the price on the perfect crystallines, but I doubt they're going to be "cheap" ever.
We'll have to wait for awhile after release to see how this affects the economy, I think that clean low req rares will go up in value as that's almost a given, maybe the days of the 3 million + trades will be over, who knows.

well did anyone think about this?
the soulbreaker is made of the same stuff as a crystalline.
its mined in elona...maybe they will be as comon of a drop as char hides in ascalon. just be happy theyn didnt make gold useless on diff chapters
a.k.a gold= tryia, yen= cantha. now that would of pissed people off.

Eventually, yen = gold, as more and more yen enters the system through quests and drops.

However, PC Gamer was right about a lot of other things (including new Assassin and Ritualist skills, which have been confirmed), which is why this is being taken so seriously.
But we really have no idea how it will work, or even if it will work on all items (wands, shields and foci might not be effected, for example, although I hope they are).
The biggest concern seems to be for 15>50 warrior weapons...

think this could only be a bad thing for the economy within gw (imo), i know most people are only casual player that think the prices payed for some weapons are ridiculous but thats surely why we have greens? perf weapons at a reasonable price. gw isnt a game you have to grind at to be good, but surely we should still have something for those that do want to? something to show for their time? after all PVE does have its limits

I remember when you could bind suits of armor along with wep/offhand in the f1 f2 etc... Those were the days, heh...

I don't get it, what so wrong with Collector's Item and Green Items? They have perfect stats, a low req of 8, green has good skins, collector's item are cheap as hell. Do they like poison chars or something that people refuse to touch them?

|
I have no "facts", but I figure Guild Wars will continue to grow simply because it's (so far) the only MORPG out there without a monthly fee. Eventually, people are going to try it. Eventually, people will tire of WoW or whatever, and want to try something new.
Now, I'm not saying Anet wants to lose customers. That could be why they released such game-changing information in PC Gamer, to get a reaction, and decide the details based on this.
For the record, I have no problem with rare skins. They don't give anyone any kind of an advantage, they're vanity items, and thus can be super-rare and expensive.
I DO hope that Mods and Inscriptions become more common, though, so casual players have more options for their weapons than relying of Collector's, Crafter's and Greens. Specifically, I'd like a Mod and Inscription Trader so I can just buy these things without trying to find someone to sell one at a reasonable price.
Pheonix Ex: Nothing's wrong with Collectors and Greens, except not every combination is out there. Plus, I think it would be nice to be able to have some variety in the skins that these Inscriptions should allow, but keep some skins "unmoddable" to satiate the high-enders.
I can live with that, and it gives those kinds of players something to work for.

What ANet could do if they really decide to go through with this (which is not really smart):
1. Only works for weapon you find yourself and inscriptions you find yourself. (So no ebay for all rare skin instantly)
2. Customized!
3. When you use a inscription, the weapon changes color to like...say, brown, and the name changes to "sundering INSCRIBED XX axe of Demonslaying"
4. When its Ctrl-Clicked it will no longer say Rare XXXXXXXXXX
If people truly want a certain weapon ONLY for look and not because of jealousy they shouldn't mind these restrictions.

And its just like real life, You pay for the Name (and Skin in GW sometimes).
Example: Even though their are 50,000 imatation Corn Flakes that taste just the same as Kellogs (because the Corn Flakes recipe was released from patent at one point) - You STILL will pay 1-2 dollars more for that box of Kellogs Corn Flakes, why? YOU ARE PAYING FOR THE NAME ON THE BOX because Kellogs is an established and trusted name and people are so vain they'll feel better about themselves if they eat a trusted name of cereal.

i have no idea why this thread is 21 pages long, but i have an advice for those who possess huge amounts of good rare weapons:
start selling. when NF comes out, buy/farm inscriptions.
i've stated on another similar thread (which got closed) on how this change can positively affect the game economy.
and to those who are completely convinced that this change is bad and are threatening to quit: may i have your weapons?

increase the drop rate of mods not to mention the "inscriptions"
think about every good mod that turned to crafting materials or the crappy suffix instead of that -5 vampiric.
now think of getting it every time same as salvaging runes.
which is another drop increase right there
notice a pattern developing?
that will put at least as many times if not more mods on the market than the rune salvage did for runes
then add in the "inscriptions"
they want those insane prices down so any player can have the fun of getting them with a little effort instead of a monster grind.
note that you can pick up 1k in loose gold in not that much time so if something goes from 50k to 3k the gold is still dropping for you at the same rate

1. How would this even be implemented? Nothing in this game is conditional upon "finding it." What if you pick up an item, drop it (removing the "Reserved for") and pick it up again? Would you no longer be able to Inscript it?
2. Are you saying items would be Customized upon Inscription? What about off-hand items?
3. OK, color changes? Honestly, who cares about color? I have Purples that are better than Golds...
4. Again, I never even noticed if something says Rare or not... and frankly, no one else will know, either. (unless you invite people to "come look in trade at this Rare Gold I found!")
Oh, and I'm not "jealous" of anything anyone else has... except maybe the time to play Guild Wars more than me!

Take Magic cards for example... there's always the risk they'll reprint a rare card again, significantly dropping the value.
It's even more of a risk in a computer game, where items can be removed, changed, and added easily.
I think people should sign a contract when they start a game saying they understand the "value" of their items could change at any time, due to "changes in the gaming environment."

A person who plays for 5 hours a month has just as much of a right to a 15^50 Gothic Dual axe as a person who plays for 5 hours a day. Why? They both paid the same amount of real-world money for the game.
Gothic Dual axes aren't a "rare skin" -- they drop like candy in the Echovald Forest. Well, white ones do, at least.
15^50 isn't a "rare mod" -- you can get items with this mod from gold chests in Shing Jea Island or Old Ascalon with relative ease.
Soon, I hope to simply put the chocolate and the peanut butter together, and make a 15^50 Gothic Dual axe for free, which could previously only be purchased from another player for over 100 platinum.
Awesome. I welcome the end of the "high-end" or "rare-skinned" item market as we know it.

As far as forge armor if that is what you want to spend your money on fine.More power to you the game is suppose to be fun.So enjoy but I have played the game just shy of a year and have no desire for it.Same way with crystal swords..to me big whoop. To someone else it makes their day.
Cool have fun.The game is for all to enjoy not just the few.
I play the game and farm.I have fun doing both.
No one needs to flame others because they have different opinions.
BTW found 30hp sword mod in Factions pre so good stuff is out there for all.

Thats why greens and collectors items were introduced for the casual gamer, perfect weapons at a fraction of the cost. The casual gamer would not care about skin thats the beauty of GW: something for everyone.

I got a couple of fows and some really high end weapons through VERY hard gaming and farming. This proces is not brainless gaming, but gaming with patience, skills and preparations. This should be rewarded.
Making this game easier is the first step to the downfall of guild wars, and since i've seen too many friends convert to the RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO WoW scene, I think A'net and this forum is making a *really* big mistake of even thinking about this kind of stupid ideas.
jonfal
Lucky, that is exactly correct. If everyone had everything equally as soon as they bought a game, there would be no reason to play. Again, it's called a game. It's supposed to be fun, and there is competition. That means some people get nicer stuff. Equating real world money to in game possessions is just stupid, there's no comparison. They have the same right, but they have to work for it. That's what makes games (and life for that matter) interesting and fun.
Perhaps the most basic logic on this matter is as follows: If everyone is giving everything, what is the point of having anything??? The Guild Wars economy is getting set to become this, and it won't take long for people to realize this. When they do, they will leave, that's all there is to it.

If they want to make acquiring phat loot easier then it is their right.
No one is telling you not to play WoW, just that you can if that is the type of game you want to play.
GW is not about that, it is about PvP skill using the tools they give you. Equal tools for everyone. The PvE portion is pure entertainment.
As to the other Elitest posts above .... Lmao. The one saying he did not refer to an Elite class, just elite players and equipment ... Lmfao.
The are no elite players, just people with no real life who farm all day, players with no real life who just sit around helping friends and others with quests/missions, and players with no real life who PvP all day. The difference is those who accumulate wealth think they are better than everyone else, but they are not.
A bit off topic...
Just because in the real world communism and socialism have been perverted by the "elite" in those countries doesn't mean it can not work in a Game. Communists are not real communists, they exploit their country for their own gain...not everyone is treated equal.

Everyone in the game has the collectors items and greens easily available to them so that there are no "GODLY" weapons and everyone is on the same playing field so I'm missing the point where if some weapons have rarer skins than others everyone should have them. Sadly they have already began to make rare skins available through collectors as well in Factions and it is my guess that this trend will continue.
So with this line of thinking they should make All weapons with the same skin so that nobody will feel left out and while they are at it they should make all of the armor look the same as well including all of that fissure armor you worked your ass off to get
All I can see coming from this is the change between finding something cool and saying WOW I just got a *fill in blank* to saying big deal everyone already has 4 of them.
The damage they have done by making as many things in the game as worthless as they already have has already made the game lose alot of appeal for people who actually enjoyed making $ and getting things that not every wammo in ascalon could get merely by logging in but it seems to be time to make sure everyone has a Ferrari now since a VW can't run over a grawl just as well.
Peace Ghull

So I guess Guild Wars is made of two groups: those that enjoying playing the game with friends, and those that think the enjoyment of the game is amassing imaginary wealth.
I personally think there's more of the first group, the ones who don't enjoy the market aspect at all.

Well, in answer to the question: "Why play the game?"
1. To meet new people.
2. To do quests and missions.
3. For fun.
To me, farming is not fun. I'm glad others enjoy it, cause it keeps prices low, but in the end of the day I'd prefer just to have lowprices on items period - without farming.
A compromise for those who play this game for rare skins: Hopefully Anet will leave some rare skins that can't be inscribed so you can still show off your "leet stuff".
But hopefully there will be plenty of other cool skins, so we can finally customize the items we want with mods and Inscriptions we want (that can't be found in Collector's items or Greens).
Honestly, guys, I think it will all work out fine. With all the new Inscriptions to farm and sell, I'm sure you guys will still make money... and who knows what new rares are in store for Nightfall!

OMG didnt think ppl would really confuse what i made this post about, so very badly.
first off it wasnt about the rich losing money. cause this update will only actualy make them richer. granted it was prolly my fault in the first place for using a sword as an example. but hey i figured it was something everyone would understand. BOY WAS I WRONG ON THAT.
now to re clearify what the post is about and no more OT PLZ ppl.
maybe if i use a staff as an example this time you all will get the idea.
staff nowadays cheap. simple
inherent mods become salvageable
staff no more cheap due to mods on it
bottom line the causual player will no longer even beable to afford a decent staff even. for those who think that there will be MORE supply, Anet HAS NOT and IS NOT going to increase the drop rates. we will only get more types of skins availiable NOT actuall numbers of mods availiable. this has never been a thread about the rich losing money its was started BY ME trying to show how bad it will be for the casual gamer. and i made suggestions on how to make it better for the casual player. thats what this thread is about, and what do i hear from most of the casual gamers here have said. yeap good for me who cares if it screws the other casual gamers over. real nice of you so called casual gamers real nice.
now ur gonna WTF how do i say staffs will go up also. simple with removable inherent mods on them the SO CALLED perfect ones may go for a guess 20k each. so now instead of getting that SO CALLED perfect staff CAUSE of the INHERENT MODS on it now make the PRICE on the GO UP. thus hurting u casual gamers. so maybe its a little clearer now since i didnt use swords as an example this time. ill add another example of the staffs
BEFORE
A. say raven staff 20% healling cast rate chance maybe 2-5k at most now
B.say raven staff 20% healling recharge rate chance maybe 2-5k at most now
4k-10k for the staffs before the inherent mod salvage comes along
AFTER
A. say raven staff 20% healling cast rate chance maybe 10-20k now
B.say raven staff 20% healling recharge rate chance maybe 10-20k now
10k-40k total price now cause of the inherent mod salvage
yeap for you casual gamers i SURE CAN SEE HOW THIS IS GONNA BE GOOD FOR U. so if u liked the prices before this is gonna happen i can see how you all are looking forward to them now.
maybe thats explained a little better

bottom line the causual player will no longer even beable to afford a decent staff even. for those who think that there will be MORE supply, Anet HAS NOT and IS NOT going to increase the drop rates. we will only get more types of skins availiable NOT actuall numbers of mods availiable. this has never been a thread about the rich losing money its was started BY ME trying to show how bad it will be for the casual gamer. and i made suggestions on how to make it better for the casual player. thats what this thread is about, and what do i hear from most of the casual gamers here have said. yeap good for me who cares if it screws the other casual gamers over. real nice of you so called casual gamers real nice.
now ur gonna WTF how do i say staffs will go up also. simple with removable inherent mods on them the SO CALLED perfect ones may go for a guess 20k each. so now instead of getting that SO CALLED perfect staff CAUSE of the INHERENT MODS on it now make the PRICE on the GO UP. thus hurting u casual gamers. so maybe its a little clearer now since i didnt use swords as an example this time. ill add another example of the staffs
BEFORE
A. say raven staff 20% healling cast rate chance maybe 2-5k at most now
B.say raven staff 20% healling recharge rate chance maybe 2-5k at most now
4k-10k for the staffs before the inherent mod salvage comes along
AFTER
A. say raven staff 20% healling cast rate chance maybe 10-20k now
B.say raven staff 20% healling recharge rate chance maybe 10-20k now
10k-40k total price now cause of the inherent mod salvage
yeap for you casual gamers i SURE CAN SEE HOW THIS IS GONNA BE GOOD FOR U. so if u liked the prices before this is gonna happen i can see how you all are looking forward to them now.
maybe thats explained a little better
