PC Gamer May 2007 Information - "Guild Wars Reborn"
RhanoctJocosa
This is sad. If half of those 'ideas' are integrated into ch2 then I'm guessing half of this community will quit, but even more will join. Think about it, WoW-like game - no monthly charges. We lose, gg.
The main reason why I play GW over WoW and many other mmorgs is that there's a very firm sense of balance to it. Same armour, weps, level cap etc. Remove this and.. I don't even want to think about that. Also, the new playable races is WAY TOO MUCH LIKE WOW. Sure it's cool but omfg come on! World pvp reminds me of WoW but hey, why not. Obviously I'm missing out on heaps here but just please remember that this is Guild Wars. And we play Guild Wars because it's.. Guild Wars.
Also, I agree 100000000000000000000000000000% with the previous posters in that we've played our ch1 characters for hundreds of hours and it'd TOTALLY RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE SUCK IF WE LOST THEM.
Please don't turn gw into another run of the mill mmorg. GW is unique. It's great. Sure there's always complaining about skill X and guild Y but we still play it. I mean cmon look at this site, how much as it developed over the MANY months. Please don't ruin GW. Just writing this makes me think about all the highlights of GW.. world champs, preview events omg so much! and i don't know why. CHAPTER 2!!!! it should be exciting, everyone here spamming how leet pwnsex it is. take that into consideration anet, once again. don't ruin gw, please.
~Thanks

I love the gameplay! I love the PvE and the PvP and the way things function as a whole. I love the looks and the artwork. I think all of you are getting these posts wrong. Ninja is just trying to make it clear to all Anet workers who are reading this, that they are also losing LOYAL customers. I've bought each chapter and even have Divine Aura. I've watched friends play WoW and each time realized why I love GW... and it's all of those HUGE differences that make GW GW and now WoW.

No, they're making a WoW clone. As I said, lots of people play GW for its innovative qualities and the fact is it different from other MMOs out there - they're about to, basically, abandon their concept and adopt the same one every MMO of today has taken.

I would like to stress point C, especially. And D and E. That is partly why so many people are upset. But apparently we're flaming instead. My bad. We're not allowed to be upset and voice our opinion on this.

I'm sure I remember right at the beginning (back when chapter 1 was released) the general consensus was wanting new races, and now thats being seen as a bad feature I plan on getting the new PC Zone (UK) to read about all of this for myself.
And I like the expansion joke, the community got what they wanted... GWEN
Also there isn't really a level cap at the moment, you get to level 20 and you still "level up" but you just don't get a higher number.

I think what made guild wars so specail to me was the level cap it made everyone equal and no one had an adventages i really hope they would change their mind about it otherwise its just gonna be like any other mmorpg...
and what about GvG dont see how thats gonna happen if theres not gonna be a cap or a over exaggerated one and if theres not gonna be whats the point in calling this game guild wars anymore...

General As it seems now, it is apparent that GW 2 is created to rival and to gain an edge over World of Warcraft ("WoW"). This can be seen in features such as:
By taking away some of GW's unique features and incorporating features from other games would mean the company is trying to absorb/attract the players' base from the other game but at the same, the company will run the risk of losing its current players' base. Is it a wise choice in the end? GW2's PvP having an edge over WoW With the new changes in GW2, I have no doubt that PvP players from WoW will be prepared to abandon WoW to play GW2. The reasons being:
Bringing achievements over This is definitely a move in the right direction. It is pretty much a politically astute move, similar to a general election. It will keep the majority of the population happy. Playable races In terms of PvE, I believe this is always a welcome move. In terms of risk assessment, I can only say that this is only for the better. More individuality and variety does improve the overall gameplay. Perhaps more races will be welcome although I can already see that more races will mean more expansion to purchase. I have got to admit that is a reasonable business strategy. Predominately open worlds In my opinion, the developers have to be very careful about this issue. One of the very reason why the current players' base chose this game is because we do not have other players 'spawn-camping', 'disturbing and annoying other people' in the current non-open worlds we have. I dare say this is one of the unique features of the current GW. A move to a predominately open worlds sounds a noble ambition but it will lose that part of GW's unique identity. Will GW2 be able to keep hold of the population that embraces that unique identity more than the concept of open worlds which almost all MMORPG possess? In addition, more players in an open world will inevitably result in more lag. These are all something the developers have to sit down and think about. high [100-plus], or possibly no level cap Once again, this seems to be a mimick of WoW and of most MMORPG. With all due respect to you, Gaile, your answer seems both politically correct and correct in the business sense. However, the level cap is a unique feature of GW and I have no doubt that many people are playing GW because it is easy to get to max level and they can try out numerous professions. The developers must bear in mind that working adults play GW as well and working adults are the ones with alot of real-world money but significantly lesser time. Gaile, your statement is too simplistic and idealistic. Think about the discrimination of lower levels when getting into groups. After which, the indirect impact is, it will discourage people from running different profession and concentrate on only one profession and do aimless grinding. Will it cause more people to give up the game because they fall behind those grinders as time goes by? I can see that most PvE players who play GW are not the grinding type and this is one of the reasons why they favor GW over other MMORPG, such as WoW. I believe the developers would have to look at all this aspects before making any rash decisions. Doubts over players' opinions I have no doubt the players who gave their opinions are the ones who are more concerned BUT they are also usually the ones with more time to spare and grind. They are by no means conclusive of the opinions of the GW's population alone. They are merely suggestions and the developers have to do their own risk-assessment in order to look at the viability of the proposals brought up. Risk Assessment / Research The question begs, what is the objective of the developers? I would assume their objective should be and ought to be to make GW the most popular game and to increase the revenue of their company. (This is the objective of all companies) Indirectly, this can only be achieved by using the utilitarian method which is to ensure the maximum amount of happiness among the players' base. Although both quantity and quality of happiness is important, in this case, quantity is more important. As such, the developers should look to changes that provides maximum happiness and minimum unhappiness amongst the GW players' population. I certainly hope that the developers have engaged professional risk-assessment team to assess the impact that the changes will bring. (This is what companies and government do everytime a new proposal is up) Whilst trying to absorb/share the pie of players' population in other MMORPG such as WoW is an astute business move but losing your current players' population, who favor the current unique features of GW, maybe counter-productive in the process. Of course, this will be very much dependent on how big the pie you gain from the other MMORPG and how big the pie you lose from your current players' population. In conclusion, I urged and cautioned the developers not to make rash decisions, do a more objective research on the positive points on the unique factors of the current GW, do more risk-assessment, before making any rash moves which may end up in the company losing more than gaining. Thank you for reading my long literature on this. Regards, Ariel. |

In terms of business marketing, the strategy is to gradually push the population from GW 1 to GW 2, not forcefully nor at one go. The impact I can see, with all games, is that the bandwidth for GW1 server will be slowly decreased (Why? - Because there is no revenue to maintain GW1 servers.. no companies will do a no-profit job; The objective of all companies is to make profit).
Hence this will inevitably indirectly force the GW1 population to either buy GW2 or to endure the limited bandwidth on GW1.

Most of the ppl have sound and wellformed (yet very early) opinions about this.
Not me, im still floating on my cloud of happiness. Mainly because i just realised that GW's visual style and vibe is the primary factor why i love this game, not the mechanics

Just quit raging at one another!
Yes we don't like the idea of GW2. We love GW1. We've played it for 2 years now. We were made promises of new chapters, etc. We appreciate the work that Anet put into this game and the work they promised to put in. We are NOT flaming Anet for their past achievements, we are saying that we are unhappy with the way the game is going, that it is being steered into a direction that will lose them customers. If only ALL people who will leave this game after they heard of the WoW-direction it's taking would post here, the positive attitudes would be in the minority. With all of the friends I have chatted to today already, we are all unhappy with the new developments, especially after we had been talking excitedly of the new chapter to come. Anet promised us new chapters every 6 months, they've broken it. What makes you think they can live up to a new game in 2008? It is surely more work and commitment than a new chapter.

Worrying.
I'll continue to play GW1. I may buy the expansion. I won't be getting GW2.
Personal thing. The level cap I'm not concerned about particularly. I don't like grind but my main char is like a virtual level 500 anyhow - higher caps wouldn't be a problem. The rest of the info given is especially discouraging. Just doesn't suit me.
Though I will say that I don't trust Anet particularly. They don't seem to have a good track record of fixing things that need fixing, and instead just offer sweetener carrots like additional minipets to try and keep the masses happy. They've got their priorities screwed. I don't see this as any different.
Interesting reading the thread though. Interesting and time-consuming.

I'm not sure if everyone posting is trying to be a "Hero". Not sure if my 1 opinion
will save the GW community myself. Let me rephrase that. My opinion doesn't really matter and will not save anything. What I do think is don't have a heart attack. This game isn't out for two years, 730 days give or take. When you think about it anything these days are copies..being games..movies..music..clothing. You can't expect anything "new" cause it's either been used somewhere else or is so bad it wont sell in any case. To say that it's like WoW doesn't make it bad, I'm not a fan of the game but for some reason...that game you so much dislike is #1 in it's genre, why not take some of the good things from and add it here.

Ok the fighting is just plain idiotic. And you know who you are...starting fights with everyone.
Anyway, overall I'm excited about GW2. But there's a lot of "if's" and "but's". For instance, I don't mind at all that I can't transfer my old characters but I hope the game isnt completely redesigned so that the skill system isnt recognizable. And that I'm not liking the high level cap BUT if it's done right then I'm okay with it.
At this point we really need a whole lot more detail....

Ninja among many others (perhaps also ones absent from such forums) are trying to make a point as well, that there is not just a positive happy-go-lucky crowd about this new game. There are 2 sides to every story. Perhaps the happy side should also let the unhappy side also have a point of view. It is what has driven GW thus far, another positive aspect to it... but now those of you who wish to be Anets heroes are expecting us, who are upset about the new game at the cost of new chapters, to just keep quiet. You can paint things the way you wish, saying that people like Ninja are throwing a tantrum. He's just defending himself from childish bashing from well... children in this forum who can't handle the fact that GW is GW and not a WoW-wannabe game.

UAX for PVP in GW2 is definately a great thing for PVP though. Other than that, there's not much change in GW2 that interest PVP players.
EDIT: Oh and the change to the movement mechanics (jumping/climbing on the z-axis) is also an interest in PVP since it changes combat mechanics and movement.
Krum4o
I bought this game on the 6 month promise. On the fact that there would not be any people in the ouside world other then party members. On the llvl 20 balance. On the fact that it was marketed as a game that depends on skill not grind. Other online games were not like this and it is the reason why I never bothered playing them. And now all of that has been scrapped for a Wow clone. Or better put for a common online rpg. This was my favourite game for the pvp and pve both. RIP guild wars
The last "expansion" reminds me of Sorrows Furnace, except we have to pay for it.
What I see happening in the future is the following. All the children, all the less skilled players will be thrilled about the cute asura, and their lvl 100 characters. The more Pvp oriented players will leave. My self included eventhough I play both, pve more recently.
On the attempt to compete with with Wow. I honestly dont think there is a chance. In 2 years time they will be way ahead with content. Also there is a reason why Wow is so popular. Warcraft was already an established franchise. So no matter what they do they will always be ahead.
Anyway there is a lot I can say but Ill end it off here. My opinion is that this was a bad move.

Well, it's nice to finally have the new, even though i'm gonna have to wait until the end of the month to get PC Zone and see the details.
I'm excited about Eye of the North and glad it'll be out a little later in the year, that way i'll actually get some time to complete the other chapters with my 10 characters and give 'Hard Mode' a go.
As for GW2, even with this info, it's still way to early to really give it a justified comment. It's a shame that GW characters cant go over to it, but at least the GW servers are not going to be shut down.
Nice job with the thread summary at the beginning Guru.

Nice job with the thread summary at the beginning Guru.

On my part, I sincerely hope that the developers have conducted a thorough risk-assessment before anything is cast in stone.

You fail.
ArenaNET defines what GW is and if it'll be a WoW-clone, then so be it. It's a risk they are ready to take.
People who can't get over a game, cannot make decisions, are not willing to adapt (leave or play, don't moan) and naively believe they can make their lifetime look less wasted by transferring titles, fow-armour, eye-candy, items etc., are immature.

If they change things so that the instanced worlds are no more, and you will be forced to share the field with any random idiot who is also out there at the time (like WoW has now) ...I feel it will ruin the game. I know a lot of my friends who play Guild Wars, and who I got to join, did so because of how WoW is. I really don't want to see Guild Wars copy from WoW, I think it's better than WoW is because it is setup the way it currently is.
I love the idea of playable races, and think it's long over due... but the incresed level cap is not something I'm looking forward to.
I just really hope that Guild Wars doesn't try to copy WoW... Vanguard has the classes and graphics to have been a great game, but they copied from WoW on everything else... the same game setup exactly, only with more options and actual good graphics... so it made the game worthless. I just hope Guild Wars doesn't make the same mistake.
I'm also glad we can't take characters over to GW2, the fresh start will be good for everyone I think ...and despite the fact that I've been playing since June 2005 and have several accounts and purchased many extra character slots and played more than 4000 hours across all the characters, I still like the idea of starting over once more for the new game. The old one will still be playable after all, right?

I'm a little anxious about new races in GWII. Human characters make the game plausible and non-WoW. And when they say 'races' they do mean 'species', don't they?
What about graphics? Will GWII use the same engine with upgrades or a whole new engine althogether?
Any time scale on GWII? I understand that its still very much in development but a rough stab in the dark would be helpful.
Can we please have a little more info on the level cap situation? The WoW lvl70 cap sickens me and I don't want GW to go down that road.
Thanks!
