I have put in many hours into guild wars over the last couple years, as have many of you I am sure. Some of you may not have a problem with leaving it all behind and moving on to greener pastures, but there are still some of us who are not comfortable with just giving it all up to start fresh.

and Lonesamurai, no I am not a mod. Just a contributor.
Ok, so you put effort into Guild Wars? and people wonder why they are burning out?

hell, the real pvp'ers aren't the ones that sit and grind, they are the ones that play for fun and know when to give up for the night, cos its a game

Oh and i consider myself casual, even with over 3000 hours, cos its a game and I've enjoyed it over other games

The increased level cap is the worst thing about the new game. Extra numbers are meaningless. In terms of percentage, two 100 levels will still be knocking off the same chunks of health as to 20 levels. There's only an illusion of increased damage.

The second worse thing is that there'll be events that could be no longer accessible 48 hours after the game starts because some people rushed ahead and cleared them all.

If they start charging monthly (which I doubt) for the original its not going to be much just enough to keep the servers alive I would guess and the others will either continue along the original, quit and play guild wars 2 which doesn't have monthly fees. Or do something else completely.

Quite frankly why didn't you already expect arena net is going to improve an obsolete series of games. There's no point. They would step in if a big problem arose though they're not ogres
You'll get no argument from me. That was the whole point of my post.

I was just explaining that that no matter what anyone at Anet says now, the people that think that, two years from now, they'll be able to choose between playing GW2 or staying with a well-supported GW1, are deluding themselves.

Ummm... for those ranting about the higher or no level cap.

Have you considered that every time you've seen the "________ has gained a skill point!" that that could be considered "______ has reached level X!"

I mean really... if you considered every skill point as a post 20 level, you might very well be over level 70 already. Kylden has 48 unused skill points, not counting the insane amount I've used already.

I do laugh at the people who think persistant world will help Guild Wars.

Better get ready for certain monsters to be spawn camped,Get ready to be mob trained,Get ready to be KS'ed,Get ready to have your items looted from you.

Cause its going to happen. It's a griefers wetdream come true..

Hmm.Perhaps I'll purchase it for that sole fact? And maybe invite some.."goon's".

Hah.I'll derive pleasure from the suffering of other players. How enjoyable.

I really don't understand this argument -- that if you can't transfer your character over to GW2 it will have been a waste. You choose to put that effort into your character. You farmed those skill points and you aquired those skills and titles. And for your decision, you can show them off/use them in GW. GW2 is a different game in a different time that will probably have different gameplay/leveling/character attribute mechanics. To me, you made those efforts as part of GW, not as part of any future game or whatever. The hall of honor or whatever it's called is plenty enough to recognize GW1 acts IMHO. If it's such a waste to you, please do not play any games ever -- as it will apparently just waste your time.

My biggest question and concern for GW2 is, Will we be forced to play with other people?

Currently, it's not necessary, thankfully. I've been playing Guild Wars since June 2005, have logged over 4000 hours across several accounts on more than two dozen characters. I play with my fiance/roommate and either Hero's or Henchmen, and we've beaten each expansion as it's been released so far, with multiple characters. We haven't needed to go find 'pugs' every two minutes for this and that, and have only had to play with other people in cooperative missions and such that leave you no choice... and any alliance battle play or PvP that we've voluntarily done.
I'm just hoping that they don't change this, and that I will still have the option to enjoy playing the game without having being forced to socialize with a bunch of children that are less than half my age, an with whom I have nothing at all in common.

It's a simple question.

Saying "we are planning" and "we are promising" are two very different things.

Also about the level cap... everyone calm down about it...
Just think about it people...

We all are levels above 20 right now.. it just isn't shown!!! I have 2 characters that are probably 74 and 139 right now.. but this doesn't mean much...

Just because the level cap is higher does NOT mean that things will change much at all...

Areanet are masters of balance in the GW universe...

Give them some time and credit... They DO know what they are doing...

And also it is a long time away... be polite... be fair...

well its only the BETA thats starting in 2008 not the actual game so it wouldn't suprise me if theres alot more added before then. So hell you may even see an auction house everyone has been moaning about in over a year (depending whenever gw2 is released)

^^; at the rate everyone is posting at you'd think its happening now lol

To be onest, I'm kinda disapointed of what ANet whant's to do with GW 2.
For my point of view, GW 1 is the oposite of WoW-no grinding, no pvp that favors the one that spends more hours farming, no more walking and walking till you get to a town.
And the thing's they said, prove that they want to change GW in a WoW game without monthly payment.
And the four races, make me wander if they'll be in some kind of different factions fighting against each other.

Got to be onest, GW 2 promises to be something else that what stands the standarts for a Guild Wars game.

And I'm very curios of the PvP aspect.Because they have to make somehow link the games. What I'm trying to say is how will the gvg be ? If GW 2 will be totaly diferent then GW 1, that would mean you won't be able to play gvg with the skills from GW 1 and the addons, and more yet, you won't be able to play gvg against team that down own the GW 2 game.

To all those that say that they are gonna leave GW because they can't kep their char and gonna have to start over... well guess what? if u start another game, u still have to start over, may it be wow, LOTR or whatever other mmo is out there...

But with, GW2, you get to start over in a new world, with some familiar settings...and settings that you liked and kept you playing for a long time..

Face it, bringing char from GW1 to GW2 is gonna cause more bad than good...imagine the chinese farmers starting GW2 with 1mil from GW1... pointless ... and an unfair advantage...

GW is free, except for expansions. Do you honestly think they'll make an expansion that ends GW1 and ties it directly into GW2, and then continue to make more?

Do you think they'll make more GW1 expansions after GW2 is live?

So what happens to GW1 servers, with absolutely no income? Well, someone wisely said that money from GW2 success can fund it. What if GW2 bombs, and everyone stays in GW1?

Even if GW2 is a huge success, where do you think Anet's effort will be focussed?

Gaile has said that they will certainly continue supporting GW1. I'm sure they will, but "support" is a very vague word. I'd bet money that it won't mean, "continue to improve, balance, and expand".

I used to give them the benefit of the doubt, and believe her, but well, I remember this guy named Charlie Brown, and this girl named Lucy, and this football...
It's going to be Diablo 2 when Blizzard created WoW all over again. D=

Diablo 2 is a Multiplayer Online RPG. Received a somewhat constant string of updates/ladder resets. When Blizzard made WoW they put their main focus on that game and continued to "support" D2. Look at how D2 is these days, they only recently patched a dupe method that lagged the game for everyone that was in effect since the introduction of the Ubers and the hellfire charm (might be wrong on the name). Aside form that they did no major updates and havent reset the ladders. (they could have at least done that to keep it somewhat fresh for everyone, nothing like the race for a ladder posistion to get you amped)

I seriously see Guild Wars going down the same path. Anet will keep on "supporting" Guild Wars but will "put their main focus" on GW2. Like this person whom I quoted said "support" is a very vague word.

Theus, Gaile responded to this fear. It's posted on page 1:

My friend and I finally made it into a major destination: a dungeon with a high-level boss. I looked around and then asked my friend, "Why are we standing here? Why are all these other people standing here?" He responded, "The boss spawns every six minutes. Looks like we have about 11 groups in front of us, so we'll be able to kill the boss, get the loot, and move on in just over an hour." I seriously and truly thought he was joking! He wasn't. )

Anyway, the design team firmly believes that instancing is a very good mechanic and instancing will be a factor in Guild Wars 2.

But here's the good bit: While we are including instancing in Guild Wars 2, we are also including persistence. This will allow you to take advantage of the many positive aspects of that presentation both in a social and gameplay sense.

Through persistence, we can offer "event chains," which are area-wide experiences that you can participate in, and which give rewards just like missions or quests. They're dynamic, and result in consequences to the world as a whole. I imagine one of our good PC Gamer analysts here will share the event chain example from the preview.

wow, after reading about Guild Wars 2 and the incoming expansion. I'm very excited about the direction GW is going. I can't wait to get both Guild Wars 2 and the new expansion but one question I have. How much support would we get on GW 1 if most or all the players move on to GW 2?

But... How do you know? Can you see into the future? Give me the lottery numbers if so. Since we only have a very slight idea about how the game is going to look like saying "it's going to be this and that for sure" does not seem to be very wise.

let's wait and see i say. Guild Wars 1 was incredibly successful given it was a brand new franchise. I don't think Anet has any intentions of ruining this success by making another WoW game. They haven't disappointed yet so ....lets wait and see

10 sentences on an online forum without pictures or any hard elements of the game laid down is hardly enough evidence to say that a game is going to be one thing or another. dont get yer panties in a wad.

I think a big problem is now that GW2 is announced, and we know GW1 will "die" ... a lot of people will slowly lose interest in GW altogether...

I think a lot of people will quit GW before GW2 comes out because, in a way, GW1 is "obsolete" -- yes, you can continue to get enjoyment out of GW1, and GW:EN ... but there will always be the psychological feeling that the game is obsolete -- there's a big difference between knowing the end will come, and knowing WHEN it will come. Our GW1 achievements have always, in a way been "meaningless", but now that we see this fact in the face, it makes us uneasy.

I think I will still want to get GW2 when it finally comes, but I already notice that I've lost a bit of interest in GW, GW:EN.

I'm actually more depressed about the future of GW now than I was before I heard the news. No news is good news as they say.

And to those people who think it's just going to be a few extra skill points, I don't think it's going to be like that. IMO you won't have max health until level 100 or whatever obsurd number they decide to use.

What EXACTLY is the Hall of Monuments?

This really affects whether I (and a bunch of my friends) will continue playing GW1 (or move to another game until GW2 comes out) and whether we will buy GW:EN at all. We are going to play another game for now until we know exactly what's going to happen - but would love to know if staying in GW1 and playing GW:EN is going to be worth our time.

Quite frankly, we don't mind at all if we can't bring any characters, gold, items, titles, experience, etc. over and we start GW2 completely fresh. Since you've let us know some data about GW2 and GW:EN, we just want enough information to make an informed decision on where to invest our gaming time and energy.

Thanks!

GWEN: Sounds good. Looking forward to it.

GW2: I stopped playing MMORPGs because of the grind, and the need for me to live my life and play the game, rather than play at life and live the game. GW2 sounds like it will encourage the latter, where as GW1 encourages the former. I think races are fine, but high level caps are not the way to improve GW content.

They are not really removing instances... they are only making part-instaces and open area... From what i can deduce is that the missions are still gonna be instanced.... and the area in between towns are gonna be open area ...

This is in no way a bad thing... maybe for farming purposes only though...

But, on the other hand that will also allow many things like maybe community events when special mobs appear and we can get everyone to fight them... or stuffs like that... instead of halloween events in towns and stuff...

In other words, open area allows many possibilities... and many disadvantages too ...dunno ...

but as ur drops being stolen...well this is not possible as you should already know that drops are already assigned to x designated player...

I think a lot of people are worried about imbalance and most importantly level discrimination. Are the skills of a Lvl 100 person going to be more powerful than a Lvl. 20? Is a Lvl 100 going to have more health or do more damage and stuff like that than a Lvl. 20? Who knows, but from past games...all things dictate..yes. This may imbalance things in certain areas. Most importantly, it will create level discrimination. You will see "GLF, must be Lvl. 95+". The whole idea of the majority of the game designed for a specific level will be gone (like how Guild Wars is primarily designed for Lvl. 20).

Again, for those who think so, I'd like to know why you think so.

I see no reason to compare GW2 to WoW at this point in time.

Unless WoW has no monthly fee, UAX max-level PvP upon purchase, and killer graphics.

(or, do people here think GW2 will have WORSE graphics than WoW?!?)

As long as Anet keeps the spirit of Guild Wars alive, it will be successful, no matter the level caps or amount of playable races. Period.

Any in-game achievements are "meaningless" and "pointless". If you think of its, everyone knew right from start that GW will one day end because it was inevitiable ... every MMO will in one way or another.

People are still playing D2 - because its fun for them, not because they want to achieve something and enlarge e-peen.

They make up the majority of the player base because Anet does not know or play the game. I have played or PvE and PvP games, and Anet is a so-so PvE game and (was) an amazing PvP game. There is no game on par with guildwars in terms of PvP, and instead of appealing to this MASSIVE market that consists of skilled and competitive PvP gamers, they appealed to the PvEers that are too cheap/casual to buy WoW.

Well I think of it this way: Look at GW1, then GW2, and tell me that all the extra features and gametypes being added do not make it more like WoW or any other boring standard MMO. If I wanted to play this type of MMO I would play WoW because I know it is a hotter MMO game.

Ok, jokes aside this time...
The main problem I see with GW2 is that it focuses more on PvP. Now, before I get flamed about this, let me explain...
I think most people that are going to complain about GW2 (including myself), play the game based on the promises of a great PvE game with the occasional PvP. We could take our characters across continents defending the world and have a great time with our guildies. For any RPers out there, you may have developed even a huge storyline behind your character and guild.
It took me forever testing and exploring different characters until I finally found one class/model/style that I liked. Honestly, I don't have 8 characters with FoW or KoaBD, but I do want my one character who took well over a year to develop to continue his life...
If I want to play a game like WoW... why not play WoW? GW is supposed to be different.

You are most certainly correct. I strongly doubt that a formal commitment to such a strategy was ever made. Nevertheless, the source of the user community's belief in the existence of such a strategy came from Arenanet, not, for example, from the wishful thinking of some devious member of the player community. That was my point; apologies if I wasn't clear.

I suspect, (but don't know as I haven't read the article), that actually Arenanet has a very strong story to tell, that presented properly, Eye of the North could be a very strong addition to the existing franchise which could seed great enthusiasm among the existing community for the new game whilst rekindling interest in the existing product. Unfortunately, it appears that has not been conveyed.

Except that the MMO's for those companies listen to their customer base. Want proof? Blizzard was asked for a kind of PvP environment for WoW, as bad and unbalanced as it is, they got it. This is just an example of one requisition and popularity increased and it was given.

Look at Anet now, 06-09-2005 was the original time of the post for the detailed Auction House system. On this very board in sardelac. This one poster gave fully detailed ideas and proposals as to how it could be accomplished with much ease. Infact that thread compared to this has HALF THE POSTS and this thread has not even been alive to my knowledge for OVER 24 HOURS. People are complaining, they have their reasons, sadly there are alot of reasons to choose from. I will continute to play my warrior, finish everything I can on him, then actually evaluate if this next expansion and game is worth it. Thus far, it really isn't and truthfully they have obviously worked on this Guild Wars 2 for a long time. Nothing magical is going to happen to appease everyone in Guild Wars 1, but if it doesn't even obviously satisfy half the players (check the poll on character transfer) how do you expect both games to survive, then yet satisfy PvP/PvE'ers with content if this company couldn't get this game right? Noting it was the first time, but we really helped them, we told them what we wanted on forums like this, we told them what we wanted added, we told them of problems in missions/glitches etc. and nothing was done.

If your sacraficing Gw1, which is more then obvious now, as it was suspiciously obvious in the past as to why attention was not paid in certain areas, this game better be good. If it gets a rating on any game website under 9.5/10 reviewers are more harsh then we are, they have potential influence and understand the history of the games they review, they aren't afraid to slap Mario games down what makes you think your immune to the gaming population? Your company will fail and start pumping crap, like Sonic the Hedgehog (Don't even tell me this franchise was successful past Sonic & Knuckles).

maybe you need to try reading, cause I never said it will be good, I said im not judging it until I play it.

and if GW had a monthly fee, i doubt most people would be playing it cause there isnt enough content nor nor server quality to justify a montlhy fee

I am not too impressed to be honest.

Guild Wars: Eye of the North
Moving from Campaign to expansion and requiring previous chapters is ok, not having new professions is ok.

It being presumably the last expansion is damn annoying!

So far I have put 2000 hours into my characters and I was led to believe that there would be more new areas for me to explore with them every 6 months.

Now I find that it will be more of a 12 month wait and then it looks like no more content for those characters.

That said it would be ok if we could take them on to Guild Wars 2 but of course we cannot.

Guild Wars 2 seems to have some interesting new gameplay variants, but I am not going to be impressed if there is no level cap.

The level cap is instrumental in knowing that you have the ability to do as much as the next player, you can do the same amount of damage and heal for the same amount. How well you do depends on the skill in playing the game. Only titles and armour/weapon skins indicate whether you are someone who has played for years or plays occasionally. I also love being able to play more than one character, and might feel pressured into concentrating on one in order to gain the most levels for the time played.

Oh Noes! The 'burbs!

Things that worry me about GW2:
  • Click to move being removed. (This is almost a game breaker for me.)
  • Non-instanced areas. (This IS a game breaker for me.)
  • Jumping and swimming. That made me literally roll my eyes. (Stupid idea.)
Things I don't care about:
  • Races.
  • Starting over with new characters.
Things I think are lame about GW2:
  • The hall of fame is lame unless it can be used to transfer weapons and other items.
  • Jumping.
  • Swimming.
  • The fact that it's being announced now instead of later in the year.
Things I don't have enough info about to make a judgement:
  • Character name transfer. (I really don't want some a-hole stealing my name and pretending to be me.)
  • Level cap.
  • Races.

On the whole, I think Anet made a huge mistake in releasing GW2 info at this time. It has completely eclipsed the expansion info, and sent much of the GW community into a frenzy. I'm not all that surprised though, given their history.

I'd also like to know what's going to happen with all the improvements that Anet has said they are working on. Are all those things now dropped? An evasive answer is not enough. I, and I'm sure many others, want the truth, not some shiny bauble to distract us from the issue at hand. Anet, are we going to get trade improvements, pet controls, and whatever else you're supposed to be working on?

I love this game. Arenanet has done a great job with it, overall. I don't always agree with their skill balances or their press releases or their lack of action on certain things, but the game has given me a lot of entertainment, and for that, I can't fault them. Now, if they'd just fix my ele's brightly lit upper lip like they should have almost 5 months ago...

No GW1 series is supposed to be different. Guild Wars 2 is a new and different game. Second of all what we know about the game is very minimal and thats at the most. So hold your horses before you start comparing anything ^^;

Why is everyone woried about level cap when GW2 is just in design stage? The new skill cap is just like the current rank system...

Word grinding is same as fame farming in HA...
having rank 9 or 12 doesnt make you better than rank 3 or 6

The only thing that needs to go unchanged is GvG...which the the only reason I still play GW

OK, I'll tell you.

Multiple races and/or a higher level cap does NOT equal WoW.

There's been talk of all these features since the beginning of Guild Wars.

As long as a higher level cap doesn't completely destroy the PvE environment...

Look, I'm not saying there's nothing to worry about. I don't want a free-to-play WoW clone either.

I'm just saying it's a little early to be calling this "World of Guildcraft" or whatever. As long as the feel of the game stay true to the spirit of Guild Wars, it's going to kick the ass out of any other MMORPG out there.

Congratulations are in order, however. You guys have managed to turn your backs on your (now "old") standards (I wonder how strong they were in the first place, given the circumstances) and loyal veteran customers without the majority of the community even realizing it. Enjoy your riches, as I'm sure there will be so many more customers flowing in now that you are offering an even higher level cap than your prime competitor (but didn't most people come to your game in the first place because they didn't have that grind to deal with here? Yes, yes I believe so). Then there are those features you said were "coming soon", but they never came (and I highly doubt they ever will). Again, this goes unnoticed by so many, because you have fulfilled the wishes of those who desire to make this game into something it shouldn't be. What happened, guys? Couldn't you take the pressure? Did you spend too much time playing competitor's games that making your own became too much of a struggle? Regardless, it doesn't matter. You'll be rich now, and that's all game companies really care about.

So, what's next on the agenda? Subscription fees? Improved PvE AI for a minimal one-time fee? Buying in-game gear for cash? In all seriousness, I'm just dying to know.

Thanks for the good times, ArenaNet. I'm sure going to miss them. Good Luck with World of Guildcraft too, as I'm sure it will be wonderful, for people who are into that kind of "thing".
It says all. I'm pretty sure Anet will get a lot of money. But not from me. And yeah "Thanks for the good times".
