a) you are forgetting that your previous weapon added energy as well(might have been 8 so you will only see a 3 energy difference between this...

the game has been out for 3 months...definately long enough that they've experienced their initial boom, in which most video games recieve...
the price weapons/upgrades go for is based entirely around how much someone is willing to pay. Depending on your situation there are two options....
you can salvage one of the upgrades from your old sword using an Expert Salvage kit as long as it wasn't a collectors item or an item recieved...
