I seriously doubt it can not be done, More likely they are unable to or do not want to spend the time and resources coding the character selection...

There is a HUGE battlefield that is usually pretty empty if you kill stuff along the way casually while doing quests, he could always spawn out...

And a +1 security precaution (if you don't type it out then a key logger wont log the keys?) At least that is how i understand it ?
